Foreword
In Japan, about 2,860,000 students learn it at about 720
universities. Of these, about 620,000 students learn it in
87 national universities.

Kyushu University is a national university made to the
fourth established in 1911.
Today, the university has more than 18,000 students
enrolled, in its 11 undergraduate schools, 17 graduate
schools, 16 graduate faculties, 3 research institutes,
university hospital and in other areas.

Kyushu University is located at Fukuoka City in Kyushu.
Fukuoka City is the eighth big city in Japan having about
1,400,000 population,one of NEWSWEEK's picks for the

  Significance of Incorporation
 ・ National universities were incorporated on 1 April 2004

 ・ The most dramatic reforms of universities since 1877
   when the first national university was established

 ・ To respond to expectations of vitalizing universities in the
   “era of knowledge”

 ・ To develop distinctive educational and research functions
   on the basis of management autonomy and university
   independence, as a result of the incorporation

 Direction of reforms
 1) “Each university to be incorporated,” and autonomous
    management to be ensured
 2) “Private sector-type” management method to be
    introduced
 3) Management system including “participation in
    management by external people” to be institutionalized
 4) Switch to a flexible personnel system (non-public
    servant type) not bound by the structure of the National
    Public Service Law
 5) Switch to the ex-post check system based on the
    implementation of evaluation                               8

    ⇒ not belonging to any faculty but deciding their majors through activities

     Reform of education to train a leader of the
     next generation
   Kyushu University - Robert Huang - Entrepreneurship
   program(QREP) in Silicon Valley, the U.S.A.

  QREP aims to stimulate our students' entrepreneur spirit
  and provides opportunities to help them to be
  internationally-minded.
  QREP was planned and implemented by the support of
  "Kyushu University-California found", a fund created
  mainly through a donation by Robert Huang, a former
  foreign student of Kyushu University from Taiwan who
  graduated from our university and achieved a great
  success in the U.S.A.                                      15

    Advanced research to lead the 21st century

    The 21st Century COE
    (the center of excellence)Program
    In FY 2002, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports,
    Science and Technology (MEXT) started a new program
    called "The 21st Century COE Program" to support
    research in universities.
    From Kyushu university, 9 projects were accepted.

    Intellctual Property Management Center of
    Kyushu University (IMAQ)
     IMAQ is the single point of contact for all intellectual
     property management and university-industry
     collaboration at Kyushu University.

      Organization-level cooperation
      A cooperation managed at the university level instead of at the
      professor level Developed as a tool for cooperation in the
      Research & Development efforts of companies.
      Kyushu University concludes 36 cooperation agreements.
      There are the most these among Japanese universities.

   Holding of the Conference of Asian University Presidents
   on a regular basis
  Purpose: To facilitate the exchange of opinions on issues
  facing Asian universities and to consult with each other
  regarding the promotion of educational and research
  exchange programs.

   1. Purpose:
      The transmission of information from Kyushu
      University to and the collection of information
      from various areas of the world.

 Short-term Study Abroad Program for International Students
        
 JTW (Japan in Today’s World)
  ・ It is positioned as a short-term study abroad program for international
    students of the world in an attempt to strategically develop the mobility
    of students and enable the future establishment of networks
  ・ Term of studying abroad: 10 months at the longest (from October to
    the next July)
  ・ Capacity: about 30

   Kyushu University Summer Program
   ATW (Asia in Today’s World)
  ・ It is positioned as a short-term study abroad program for international
    students and is open to Europe and the U.S., with emphasis on Asia
  ・ Term of studying abroad: 6 weeks (from late June to early August)
  ・ Capacity: about 60

 ASEP (Asian Student Exchange Program)
□Purpose:
  ・To support the promotion of student exchanges among Asian universities
  ・To transfer of credits
  ・To provision of economical support such as scholarships for the student
□   Term of studying abroad: Less than 1 year

 Friendship Scholarship Program 
□Purpose:
  ・To invite students from abroad who attend prestigious universities in
   their home country and who will play an important role in their nation’s
   future
  ・To foster the nation’s future leaders who will maintain good relations
   with Kyushu University in the future, and will play a role of contact person
□   Term of studying abroad: 3 to 12 months                               24

  ITO New Campus is 15km away from center of Fukuoka City.
  An area of ITo New campus is 275ha, the East-West length are 3km,
  the North-South length are 2km.
  It is Hakozaki Campus and Ropponmatsu Campus and Harumachi Farm
  that relocate to ITO New Campus.
  Part of Hakozaki Campus ended relocation, about 5,000 peoples are active
  now in this campus.
  When relocation of Ropponmatsu campus is over in 2009, active people
  increase to About 1,1000 peoples.
  Finally,about 20,000 peoples are going to be active in this campus.     26

   three concepts
 ・ The city model campus which was opened by a citizen
 ・ The campus which demonstrates technology in the  
  next generation
 ・ The campus as an oasis of nature and history

 The campus which demonstrates technology
 in the next generation

  Kyushu University Hydrogen Project
  A challenge for reliable clean energy technologies

 Campus-wide IC Card Project
  New Social Information Infrastructures in moderately
  unrestricted society

 Institute of NANOSCIENCE
  Reclamation and industrialization of base technology of
  nanoscience in the 21st century (A center is going to be
  installed by support of Fukuoka City)

(3) ITO New Campus

  Kyushu University Academic City Plan
 The goal is to create a regional
 knowledge hub and knowledge
 clusters in the region appropriate
 for the 21st century : the Age of
 Knowledge.

 Research Park led by Kyushu University
 This plan aims at construction of a Research Park led by
 Kyushu University ITO New Campus.
 Interchange of intellect and creation activity are promoted
 by interchanges with universities and industries and
 governments.

Kyushu University is a national university made to the fourth established in 1911. Today, the university has more than 18,000 students enrolled, in its 11 undergraduate schools, 17 graduate schools, 16 graduate faculties, 3 research institutes, university hospital and in other areas. 3

QREP was planned and implemented by the support of "Kyushu University-California found", a fund created mainly through a donation by Robert Huang, a former foreign student of Kyushu University from Taiwan who graduated from our university and achieved a great success in the U.S.A. 15

  • 26. (3) ITO New Campus 2km 275ha 3km ITO New Campus is 15km away from center of Fukuoka City. An area of ITo New campus is 275ha, the East-West length are 3km, the North-South length are 2km. It is Hakozaki Campus and Ropponmatsu Campus and Harumachi Farm that relocate to ITO New Campus. Part of Hakozaki Campus ended relocation, about 5,000 peoples are active now in this campus. When relocation of Ropponmatsu campus is over in 2009, active people increase to About 1,1000 peoples. Finally,about 20,000 peoples are going to be active in this campus. 26
