3. Foreword
In Japan, about 2,860,000 students learn it at about 720
universities. Of these, about 620,000 students learn it in
87 national universities.
Kyushu University is a national university made to the
fourth established in 1911.
Today, the university has more than 18,000 students
enrolled, in its 11 undergraduate schools, 17 graduate
schools, 16 graduate faculties, 3 research institutes,
university hospital and in other areas.

Significance of Incorporation
・ National universities were incorporated on 1 April 2004
・ The most dramatic reforms of universities since 1877
when the first national university was established
・ To respond to expectations of vitalizing universities in the
“era of knowledge”
・ To develop distinctive educational and research functions
on the basis of management autonomy and university
independence, as a result of the incorporation

Reform of education to train a leader of the
next generation
Kyushu University - Robert Huang - Entrepreneurship
program(QREP) in Silicon Valley, the U.S.A.
QREP aims to stimulate our students' entrepreneur spirit
and provides opportunities to help them to be
internationally-minded.
QREP was planned and implemented by the support of
"Kyushu University-California found", a fund created
mainly through a donation by Robert Huang, a former
foreign student of Kyushu University from Taiwan who
graduated from our university and achieved a great
success in the U.S.A. 15

In FY 2002, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports,
Science and Technology (MEXT) started a new program
called "The 21st Century COE Program" to support
research in universities.
From Kyushu university, 9 projects were accepted.

IMAQ is the single point of contact for all intellectual
property management and university-industry
collaboration at Kyushu University.
Organization-level cooperation
A cooperation managed at the university level instead of at the
professor level Developed as a tool for cooperation in the
Research & Development efforts of companies.
Kyushu University concludes 36 cooperation agreements.

Short-term Study Abroad Program for International Students
JTW (Japan in Today’s World)
・ It is positioned as a short-term study abroad program for international
students of the world in an attempt to strategically develop the mobility
of students and enable the future establishment of networks
・ Term of studying abroad: 10 months at the longest (from October to
the next July)
・ Capacity: about 30
Kyushu University Summer Program
ATW (Asia in Today’s World)
・ It is positioned as a short-term study abroad program for international
students and is open to Europe and the U.S., with emphasis on Asia
・ Term of studying abroad: 6 weeks (from late June to early August)
・ Capacity: about 60

ITO New Campus is 15km away from center of Fukuoka City.
An area of ITo New campus is 275ha, the East-West length are 3km,
the North-South length are 2km.
It is Hakozaki Campus and Ropponmatsu Campus and Harumachi Farm
that relocate to ITO New Campus.
Part of Hakozaki Campus ended relocation, about 5,000 peoples are active
now in this campus.
When relocation of Ropponmatsu campus is over in 2009, active people
increase to About 1,1000 peoples.
Finally,about 20,000 peoples are going to be active in this campus. 26

This plan aims at construction of a Research Park led by
Kyushu University ITO New Campus.
Interchange of intellect and creation activity are promoted
by interchanges with universities and industries and
