10. GEM future, challenges ahead, crossroads
‣ how to build stronger civic alliances?
‣ how to further promote data and
model collaboration?
‣ how to bring GEM into greater use?
‣ how to effectively communicate risk?
and how to balance GEM’s twin goals of
community engagement and global uniformity?
12. On what should we focus the funding in the future?
‣ Time dependent hazard
‣ Tsunami hazard
‣ Site response / amplification
‣ Infrastructure Risk
‣ City scenarios
‣ Recovery modelling
Welcome to the 2013 GEM Reveal event, hosted at this marvelous 17th century location, courtesy of Eucentre. This two-day meeting is a unique gathering of over 130 experts from all over the world, marking progress towards a shared understanding of earthquake risk assessment and most importantly towards an open platform of tools and resources, responding to the risk assessment needs of communities across the globe. Thank you again thus for making the effort to be here with us.
GEM achievements would not be possible if we had not first laid our guiding principles, which define who we are and what we do, and ultimately serve as a measure of GEM’s success.. ‣Working together.Only 130 people in this venue, but we are a community of thousands of people from all corners of the word (more on this to follow).‣Trusted Science. 250 leading experts selected (through public bidding and peer review) to develop global best practice. OpenQuake Engine tested in 80 countries.‣True Transparency.Open source development, everything publicly available. Beyond ourselves, public good- A global scientific community that will:share data, models and knowledge, create tools and software to inform decision-making for risk mitigation and management, ultimately building a heightened public understanding and awareness of seismic risk, to increase the resilience of populations, especially for those in the most vulnerable areas..
Over these past 4.5 years, our public-private partnership has grown, in numbers, diversity and strength. This is not only an achievement but also a necessity, in order to fulfill GEM’s mission.
I will pause a little here, since this is an articulated figure, but so is GEM! And we see it as an asset, that allows us to pull together resources, develop cross-dialogues and provide balance in the vision and the roadmap.Note the two-way interactions, and how the OpenQuake Platform aims at serving as the agora/container for the products of such collaborations..
We invested significantly in science (50% of our budget)..And also on IT infrastructure.. Whilst, we kept admin/management costs in GEM to a minimum (10%-15%, this is a very lean organisation)
You’ve heard this story before; this is not how GEM’s scientific framework used to look like, and arriving at this took quite some effort, and your contribution (in a number of workshops, and the unconference sessions at the GEM Outreach Meeting in Beijing) was critical. This is thusthe result of how open GEM is, and how it treasures and builds on feedback. (so, again, these 2 days are a great opportunity for GEM and its community to shape and fine-tune our agenda, openly and transparently)
I will not be providing you details on these achievements; since others will do it next – Marco Pagani, Paul Henshaw/Ben Wyss, Ross Stein, Graeme Weatherill/DamianoMonelli, Helen Crowley. But I can certainly assert that I am convinced that these are tools that will shape the way seismic risk assessment will be carried out in the future, the way that communities, even if with limited resources, will be able to carry out reliable risk assessment, with a focus on the impact that earthquakes might have.
And we added also the Booths Experience this year, so that you have plenty of opportunity to interact with all those behind the many different activities, including our experts from the regional programmes/projects, from Global Components, from the software development team, etc..
I am particularly excited to show you this animation, a true world premier! OpenQuake v1.0, and its 130 thousand lines of code, was tested by hundreds of users around the world, prior to today’s official release.
We have dedicated a discussion to these topics, in the second half of tomorrow’s morning. We are counting on your contribution and inspiration; we need it!
An example of how funding allocation and prioritisation might look like (proposal: higher focus on regional partnerships) – let us know what you think of this, during tomorrow’s session.
During today’s afternoon, let us take advantage of the 101 interactions to discuss also this.
We are working on a new GEM booklet, which we will finalise after this meeting, with your input!..
Grab you Post-Itblocks (white board on your left there), you can user Twitter, mics available (see those with a black GEM polo on), turn-off your blackberries, and help GEM shaping its future!.. I declare officially open the GEM 2013 REVEAL Meeting!
