Proper use of standpipe fire hose station:
1. Open valve completely.
2. Pull hose entirely off rack or water will not flow.
Maintain
15 – 20 feet
distance
3. Water will flow when hose is free and nozzle is open.

The illustrated chain of survival
demonstrates in a fire scenario how
safety-to-life does not depend on
any single safeguard. All emergency
systems must work together within a
balanced fire protection plan. FEMA,
The Life Safety Group is dedicated
to promoting this important
educational message to save lives
and protect property.

Standpipe Fire Hose Stations
A Standpipe Fire Hose Station is a
critical component of a Balanced
Fire Protection Plan
A complete and balanced fire protection plan is
one that includes on-site, defend-in-place fire
protection equipment to protect individuals
against initial developing fires. Standpipe fire
hose stations are an invaluable link in the life-saving
“chain of survival” that can ultimately
save lives and protect property and the environ-ment
from fire. The standpipe fire hose station
is critical to a balanced fire protection plan
because of the fire hose rack, fire hose, and
nozzle contained within it. This equipment
works together to allow fast response to fire
before the fire has time to spread.
Standpipe fire hose stations, along with other
equipment such as fire extinguishers, are Your
First Defense against small fires once the fire
department has been called and everyone is
safe. This is especially important where the fire
department response is in excess of five minutes.
The benefits of Standpipe Fire
Hose Stations:
Quick Suppression
Standpipe fire hose stations provide early
suppression. Statistics show that standpipe fire
hose stations provide on-site protection at the
earliest stage of the fire and, therefore, offer
quick and effective response. Occupants do not
have to wait for help to arrive before a fire in
its early stages can be extinguished or contained.
One Person Operation
Standpipe fire hose stations are activated and
operated by one person. This equipment does
not depend on heat, smoke, or flame to
spread before water can be applied to the
fire. This manually activated equipment
provides total reliability in the event of failure
of automatic systems.
Minimal Water Damage
Standpipe fire hose stations are ideal for extin-guishing
small fires. Fire hoses installed within
standpipe stations can actually minimize water
damage since water can be applied directly at
the fire base versus indiscriminate spray from
automatic systems. In addition, they can be
shut off immediately after extinguishment.
Occupant Safety/Rescue
Standpipe fire hose stations can provide a path
of egress otherwise blocked by a fire. Leaving a
building quickly isn’t always an option during a
fire. Standpipe fire hose stations can be used to
clear a pathway to safety and provide temporary
occupant protection.
Fire protection and safety hinge
on the first few minutes
A fire can consume a property in minutes. That
is why those first critical seconds can be the
difference between a single flame and a tragedy.
Ninety-three percent of deaths and 95 percent
of property damage occurs once the fire has pro-gressed
beyond the early stage. More fires can
be extinguished early if the public and industry
are educated about the importance of standpipe
fire hose stations and how they can prevent fires
from consuming property and taking lives.
Consider these facts:
When fires are extinguished in the
early stages:
Loss of life is minimal. 93 percent
of all fire-related deaths occur once
the fire has progressed beyond the
early stages.*
Direct property damage is minimal.
95 percent of all direct property
damage occurs once the fire has
progressed beyond the early stages.*
