    • Customer: Ms. Budd Animal: Kangaroo Report by: Felicia Ferentinos Kangaroo ReportThe kangaroo is an herbivore which means that they only eatplants. The types of food that the kangaroo will eat are grass, shrubs, leaves, stems and they will also eat shoots to. Kangaroosare mostly nocturnal that means that they are more active atnight and they will sleep during the day. That means that they arenighttime feeders. When they are in the wild then they willusually graze on grasses. They will also spend their time eatingduring dawn (day) and sometimes at dusk (night or evening). When a day is cloudy and it is cold enough. Then these animalswill start to eat during the day time. There are some species ofkangaroo that can go for a week or even months without drinkingany water because they usually get their water from the plantsthat they eat. Kangaroos are grazing animals. These animals donot hunt for their food. They are usually hunted by other animalsthat is in the area. The food that the kangaroos will mostly eat isgrass. The other food that they will mostly eat is leaves that areon shrubs. They can go for a very long time without water. Thetree kangaroos will eat leaves and fruit. Kangaroos can shallowtheir food with out even chewing it and then later the kangaroowill regurgitate a cud and then they will start to chew it.Kangaroos only need a little bit of water. These animals can go formonths with no water in them. These animals can also have theability to dig up their own water wells. Kangaroos are really bigherbivores. They will feed on grass and on roots. These animalswill also eat chew cud. The head of the kangaroo kind a looks likethe head of a llama. All the species of kangaroo are all nocturnaland crepuscular, they will usually spent their days idling quietlythat happens in the cold evening, nights and also in the morning
    • to. They will move and eat at the same time. Kangaroos only liveon the continent of Australia. They can also live on New Guinea. The habitats that they live on are wet forests that can be locatedon New Guinea. These animals can also be seen on open forests. These animals mostly live in East Australia and on Tasmania. Theycan also be found on the Indonesian islands that are on NewGuinea. These animals can also be found on surrounded islands. The Kangaroo lives in so many different types of habitats like theycan live in forests woodland areas, grassy plains and on thesavannas. In century’s ago kangaroos used to live in New Zealand. The Eastern grey kangaroo lives in Tasmania. The big-footedbouncing kangaroo can live in some parts of Australia like in theislands of Tasmania. These animals can also be found in NewGuinea. They can also be seen on the neighboring island that is onthe north of Australia. Over the years people have brought theseanimals outside of their natural homelands. Like for right nowthey are living in New Zealand, Great Britain, and they can also befound on Hawaii. The red kangaroo lives in the scrub and they canalso be found on the open grasslands this also includes arid andon semiarid areas. These animals will also live in Central Australia. They can also live in north eastern and on the Southeast coastsand on Southwest of Australia they can also live on Tasmania. Thekangaroos that are the most common is the red eastern kangarooand the western kangaroo. These kangaroos are the biggestkangaroos in the world. The males can weigh about 200 pounds(91 kilograms). The females can weigh a half then the males. Thesmallest species of the kangaroo and it can weigh about 1 pound(454 grams) and this kangaroo is the only one in the species thatdoes not have the ability to hop like the other kangaroos that arein the family. The red and the grey kangaroo can stand about fiveto six feet tall. Most kangaroos can weigh about 50 to 120pounds. There are some kangaroos that can weigh about 200pounds. The size of the kangaroos body is 3 ¼ -5 ¼ ft (1-1.6 m).
    • The size of the tail is mostly 3-3 ½ ft (90cm-1.1m). The bodylength of the kangaroo is 1.5m and they can weigh about 91 kg.The tallest male kangaroo can grow about 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall. The musky rat kangaroo can grow about 8 inches (21 centimeters)tall. They can weigh about 200 pounds (90 kilograms) the weigh ofthe red kangaroo is 12 ounces (340 grams) that is also like thesame size as the musky kangaroo. The size of the red kangaroo is2m (6 ½ ft) tall and they can weigh about 90 kg (200 lbs). The redkangaroo can grow about 29.5-63 in (75-160 m). Their tail lengthis 25-47 in (64-120 cm) their height when they are upright thenthey can be 6ft (1. 8m). Their average weigh is 37, 5-198lb (17-90kg). The males can weigh twice as mush as the females. Thegrey kangaroo can live about 18 years. When these animals are inthe wild then they can live about 6 years and when they are incaptivity then they can live about 20 years. The average life spanfor a kangaroo is when they are in the wild that is between six toeight years. The red kangaroo can live about 15 years. There aresome species that can live about 7 to 18 years it really depends onthe species. The average age when they are in the wild is less then10 years. There are some species of the kangaroo that have beenknown to live this long and that life span is 20 years old. Thenormal life span for these animals is 23 years that is the life spanwhen they are in captivity. Their other average life span isbetween 9 to 10 years old. There are some species that can alsolive about 28 years to. There are three subspecies of kangaroosthat are alive today and those kangaroos are the red kangaroowhich is well known to be the largest one of the kangaroo species. The other kangaroo species is the Eastern grey kangaroo they areknown to be the heaviest of all the kangaroo species but they arenot as tall as the red kangaroo. The last species of the kangaroo isthe western grey kangaroo. These kangaroos can be found in bignumbers and they can be seen in lots of different colors like theycan come in grey and brown. There are only four true species of
    • the kangaroo and those kangaroos are red eastern kangaroo, thegray kangaroo, the western gray kangaroo and the antilopinekangaroo. There are 50 other close relate species like thewallabies, the tree kangaroo and the pademelons. The redkangaroo can be a really fast hopper these kangaroos can hopabout 3m (10ft) that is when they are hopping in the air and whenthey need to hop forward then they will hop at least about 10m(35ft). The kangaroo has a muscular design that can help them tomove in any way that can be unique to macros that is calledsalutation this means that these animals can hop on both of theirfeet so that they can push themselves off of the ground they cando this at the same time. The biggest species of the kangaroofamily can cover over 15 feet (7 meters) per hop when they arecrushing at their top speed and they have been clocked at manytimes as 30 miles per hour (48 kilograms per hour) in really shortbursts. Just like a perpetual motion machine these animals canhop so fast that gives these animals the power to keep on movingwithout expending a lot of energy. It is a really known fact thatkangaroos can lose their energy when they are hopping at least 20miles per hour (32 kilometers per hour). They can do this by thepower of their legs. They have powerful muscles and tendons thatcan work together that can help the kangaroo to move efficiently. The red kangaroo can speed up about 40kph (25 mph). Kangarooshave a very special way for breathing that helps them to save lotsof their energy when they are hopping. When a dingo runs thenthey can use their energy to move their chest muscles and thatcan help them when they are breathing. The kangaroo’s bodyworks really different then any other mammal because when theirfeet is pushed off from the ground then the air will start topumped out of the animals lungs. When the legs are stretchforward then the lungs will start to expand and they will also startto fill. The kangaroo’s chest muscles are not used to move air in orout. So that the kangaroo can save its energy for hopping. The red
    • kangaroo can move around for 15 miles (24 kilometers) per hour. When they are being chased by a predator then they will start topick up the paces. These animals can increase the length of eachhop. The numbers of their hopping skill always stays the same. The fastest speed for a kangaroo can go for 21 miles (34kilometers) per hour. These animals must increase their hoppingrate. Scientists have studied the red kangaroo by clocking theracing of the kangaroo of the rate of 31 miles (50 kilometers) perhour. At their very top speed the kangaroo can reach down toonce every 23 feet (7 meters). The hopping skills are very helpfulfor escaping a predator. The kangaroo can hop really high when itis going up and down. The kangaroo would rather spring forwardthen going up and down but when they are facing with obstacleslike bushes or a fence. It is way easier for a kangaroo to hop upthen over it. They have been seen for hopping over 10-foot (3-meter) fences. This skill can give these animals an edge over theirpredators that they face. When they first hear any sign of dangerthen they will quickly bound away. The faster the kangaroo sensethe danger the move that they will be able to escape from thepredator. That is the reason why the kangaroo always has to bealert by looking, listening and sniffling at any sign of danger thatcomes to them. The kangaroo has very big and very powerful hindlegs these legs are used for leaping. They will use their musculartail for balance and these animals also have very small heads. Thekangaroo can hop over about 40 miles per hour (74 kph) and theycan also go over 30 feet (9m) in a single hop. When these animalsare standing then they can use their muscular tails as an extra leg.Kangaroos live in a group and it is called a mop, a troop or a herd.Kangaroos are really social animals. Have you ever thought of akangaroos famous jabbing and boxing as macropad sign language. The behaviorists who study the kangaroo say that the jab is justone part of the whole vocabulary of glances, hisses, avoidancehops, kicks, punches, gentles touches and grooming. Behaviorists
    • that have discovered the steps that the kangaroos will take to getto know each other in the group they can do this by using mirrordevelopment of their friendship. Baboons can also do this to.When the kangaroo feels that danger is near then the kangaroowill alert the members that are in the mop by thumping their feetvery loud on the floor. These animals can communicate with eachother by grunting, coughing and hissing. When a mother kangarooneeds to call her younger then she will make a cluck sound. Theseanimals can also travel together to. In a kangaroo mob a group ofkangaroos can hold about ten or even more males and femalesthat can be found in a kangaroo group. The dominant male iscalled the boomer they are called this because of their size or age.The boomers job is to be in chance of all the mating that goes onin the mop. Sometimes the boomer will sometimes find himselfwander in or out of the mop so that he can check on the femalesand the intimidating the other males who want to mate with thefemales that are in the mop. The female kangaroo has been calledlots of different names and those names are doe, flyer, Jill or evena roo. The male kangaroo has also been called lots of differentnames to and those names are bucks, boomer, jack or old man.The males will start to grow bigger and stronger through theirwhole lives. The collective noun for the kangaroo is the mop, troop or the court. The largest species of kangaroo are reallysocial animals. These animals can graze together and they canalso travel together to. The group of a kangaroo can hold about 2to 50 members that can be put in a kangaroo group. The treekangaroo and lots of wallabies and wallaroos they rather live bythemselves that means that they are solitary animals that meansthat they do not live in a group or in a family. The fastest of all thekangaroos is the female red kangaroo they can reach the speedsof 35 mph of short bursts of up about 45 mph. when a malekangaroo battles with another male then they will start to lockforearms or jab at each other and then they will try to push the
    • other one off balance that was the last resort. They will also usetheir powerful hind legs to battle each other to. But that meansthey will have to be extra careful so that they do not slash eachother with their very sharp claws unless they really do meanbusiness. Kangaroos have very big feet that is the reason why theycan not walk normally. When the kangaroo really needs to walkreally slow then they will use their tail to make a tripod with it’stail to make a tripod with it’s two forelimbs so that they can raiseto their hind feet forward in a form of location that is called“crawl-walking,” kangaroos have been known for jumping aphenomenal distance. The kangaroo is known to be the biggestmarsupials in this animal group. There are other animals in thisgroup that also includes the koala and the common brush tailpossum. Marsupials are really different then the other mammalson earth because they can give birth in a pouch which can befound on their bellies. This is how these animals can carry theiryoung. The kangaroo’s natural predators are now extinct andthose animals are the thylacine and the marsupial lion. Today thekangaroo’s only predator is a really wild dog that is called thedingo. The dingo started to become the kangaroo’s predator inAustralia in 5,000 years ago. Dingoes are one of the predators thatthe kangaroo has to worry about. Just like the dingo and the othercanids that is in the species of these animals that also includes thefox and the feral cat and these animals have pose a threat to thekangaroo population just like they do with the other animals thatis in this continent. The kangaroos and the wallabies are reallygood swimmers and they can also flee in waterways it depends ofthe present is with the option that is being pursed into water. Thebigger species will use their forepaws to hold down the predatorunder the water so that they can drown it. The other gooddefensive that the kangaroo can do is catching the attacking dogwith their forepaws and with their disemboweling they can dothese skills by using their hind legs. There are some species of
    • kangaroo that really enjoy grooming each other. Social groomingis not really common with the bigger species of kangaroo. Thereare some kangaroo mothers that can groom their babies. All ofthe females that are in the mop always groom each other.Grooming helps a lot in a kangaroo mop because it helps keeptheir family strong and healthy and it can also help them to stayclean. The female kangaroo which is called a doe and their relateswill usually give birth to a really tiny newborn kangaroo. They willmake a really great journey across their mother’s stomach so thatthe younger can safely reach the mothers pouch. The females willbe ready to mate when they are 18 months and when they are 3years old. The males will be ready to mate when they are aboutthe same age as the females and that is 3 years old. When themales want to mate with a female then they will start to fightother males that will also want to mate with the females. Thisstarts to happen during the breeding season. The pouch can be nobigger then a bumblebee. The babies are blind so it is really hardfor them to get out of their mother’s pouch. So they will have touse their forelimbs so that they can get out of the pouch. Thebaby kangaroos can have the same size as a snake-like motionthat can be over then six inches that is from their birth canal totheir pouch. When they are inside of the mother’s pouch. A malewill also fight for them for a chance to mate with the females. Themales will fight with each other by kicking and boxing with theother males. The male will make a snort so that he can warn theother male to stay away. If one of the males wins then he willhave a chance to court with the females and they will do this forone or two hours before he can activity mate with her. When thebabies are inside of the mothers pouch then it will start toimmediately wrap their mouths around one of their mother’s fournipples. Then the joey does not let go until it is three mouths old.A baby kangaroo is called a joey. The very small joey will not beable to leave its mothers pouch for good until it is about eight or
    • ten months old, but it will still poke its head out of the pouchfrom time to time when it wants to drink milk from it’s mother. The females pouch is located on her belly that is made by skin sothat they can cradle the baby joey. A baby joey can grow aboutone inch long (2.5 centimeters) at birth that is like the same sizeas a grape. After the joeys’ are born then the joey will start totravel unassisted that can go through their mother’s thick fur sothat they can be comfort and so that they can be safe in thepouch. A newborn joey can not swallow or suckle they do noteven need to know these skills because their mother can use herown muscles to pump the milk down its throat. When they areabout 4 months old then the joeys emerges from the pouch forvery short trips and so that they can graze on the grass and onreally small shrubs. When it is 10 months old then that is the timethat they can be mature enough to take care of themselves. Thefemales will usually give birth to only one joey at a time. Thenewborns can weigh about 0.03 ounce when they are born that islike the same size as a lima bean. After they are born then thejoeys’ will start to learn how to crawl into its mother’s pouch. Thisis the time when they are nursing. This is the time when they arenursing from their mother and then they will continue to growand develop. The red kangaroo joeys’ will not be ready to leavethe pouch until they are more then eight months old. The graykangaroo babies will be ready when they are almost a year old. Amother kangaroo can give birth to only one baby there are somespecies that can have four babies it really depends on the species. The size of a joey is 0.2 to 0.9 inches (5 to 25 millimeters) that islike the same size as a grain of rice or a size of a honeybee. Thebabies will reach maturity when they are 2 to 4 years that is forthe males. For the females it will be about 14 to 20 months. There are so many different types of kangaroos there are about20 of them that is in the smaller species that are now beingthreatened. They are getting hurt because they are being driven
    • away from their feeding grounds that are being taken over bydomestic animals and by mining, agriculture, and limber interests. There are some species that are being preyed on by introducedanimals like the red fox and the common house cat. The biggerspecies of kangaroo are having a much bigger problem becausethey are reproducing so rapidly that their population surveys thatare being taken away from the kangaroos. The kangaroos are alsobeing culled. All of these species are being studied by scientiststhey are also looking for ways of introducing that means they areputting the kangaroos under birth control that is being put intosalt licks. The kangaroos are also being hunted for meat and forhides. The introduction that means domestic herbivores theseanimals are the sheep, cattle and rabbits they are increasing thecomputation for a lot of plants that may cause food scarcity intimes of drought. The total of the kangaroo population dependson the rainfall. When the rainfall is really high then theirpopulation can be up about 12 million. When the rainfall is lowthen their population will drop to 5 million. Females are not ableto conceive during the drought and the males may stop producinga sperm. Even through the kangaroos are really not commerciallyfarmed. The ones that live in the wild are often being hunted byhuman hunters. People hunt the kangaroo for sport, meat and fortheir fur. When the farmers are conserving the graze lands fortheir sheep and for their cow. Australians are working very hardto help save the kangaroo and also to find the proper balance thatis between the kangaroo species and people. Together we cansave the kangaroo from disappearing forever. That is what I knowabout the kangaroo.
