Jamelah Jamaluddin CEO of Kuwait Finance House, Malaysia Age: 54 CEO of Kuwait Finance House, Malaysia She heads the largest Islamic bank in Malaysia, with a capitalization of $640 million, an affiliate of the second-largest Islamic banking group in the world. Prior to this she headed Malaysia's RHB Islamic Bank--the first woman CEO of an Islamic bank. A 25-year industry veteran, she was tapped to rejoin the Kuwait affiliate earlier this year to put its house back in order after a string of bad loans. Kim Jeong-ah, Chief executive, CJ Entertainment, South Korea Age: 48 Runs the country's largest media company, a major purveyor of online video games. A show business pioneer and a former broadcast producer, she began leading CJ Entertainment's marketing and distribution in 2005 and was appointed CEO last January. Also runs the media stalwart's foreign film ventures. Now in her tenth year as governor of the central bank of Malaysia, Dr. Aziz (often called Zeti in the domestic press) is the first woman to hold the post and has been ranked one of the world's top 10 central bankers by trade publications. The University of Pennsylvania economics Ph.D. assumed office, initially as acting governor, under awkward circumstances. Her predecessor quit rather than impose capital controls that then prime minister Mahathir Mohamad chose to protect the ringgit against speculation at the height of the Asian financial crisis in 1998. Despite intense criticism, especially from the International Monetary Fund, Aziz's institution pegged the currency to the U.S. dollar and banned offshore trading of the currency. Soft-spoken but no-nonsense, she oversaw the subsequent transition of the ringgit to a managed float in 2005 and the gradual relaxation of foreign exchange rules. Through good relations established between her bank and its counterpart in China, direct renminbi-ringgit exchange was opened in August. This first such emerging-market window for the Chinese currency, outside the intermediary role of the U.S. dollar, is expected to spur bilateral goods trade. Aziz also has championed a global Islamic financial system, with Malaysia at the forefront. Her own family origins are Circassian-Turkish and Arabian; her father is an economist, and her mother is a social activist. An uncle, Hussein Onn, was the third prime minister of Malaysia. 1. She's overseeing plans to expand into China, India and Southeast Asia. Earned a math degree at Ewha Women's University and an M.B.A. from Sogang University. Joined Citibank's Seoul branch in 1985 and supervised the IT department before becoming a managing director. The group owns the country's second-largest Korean bank in terms of assets. 5. Jennifer Li CFO, Baidu, China Age: 42 6. Peggy Liu Chairman, Joint U.S.-China Collaboration on Clean Energy, China Age: 42 Spearheads an ambitious effort to bring clean-energy technology to China through her brainchild, the Shanghai- based Joint U.S. China Collaboration on Clean Energy. In 3 years she's trained 200 Chinese mayors on how to make their cities more environmentally sound, brought in international experts to teach Chinese utilities how to devise a more energy-efficient electrical grid and distributed 130,000 energy-saving light bulbs. Spurring Liu into action: 70% of China's energy comes from dirty coal, and 16 of the world's most polluted cities are in China. Through her legendary Rolodex, she's forged partnerships with ACCENTURE , DELL , CISCO and DUKE ENERGY . Liu grew up in the U.S., studied computer engineering at MIT and has done stints at an early-stage venture capital fund in Shanghai, at McKinsey & Co. and as an adviser at the Clinton Global Initiative. 7. Lakshmi Pratury Conference organizer, India Age: 50 She cohosted the first-ever TEDIndia conference in Mysore last year, an offshoot of the annual technology-oriented big-think event in the U.S. In Maharashtra state in December she's holding the first INK Conference (Innovation & Knowledge), in association with TED, which will follow a similar format. She aims to bring Indian notables from outside of IT onto a global CJ Entertainment handled the Korean distribution of Iron Man, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Kung Fu Panda and others. It plans to produce 3-D movies with 1492 Pictures, the Hollywood studio best known for producing the first three Harry Potter movies. The CJ Group chaebol started the unit in 1995. Chief financial officer of China's dominant Internet search provider since 2008, Li is casting a larger Business presence. In May she joined the board of cigarette giant Philip Morris International. Li worked with GM for 7 years in financial positions in Singapore, the U.S. and Canada, ultimately becoming CFO of GM China in 2001 and the North America controller of GMAC , the Detroit automaker's equally ill-fated financing arm, in 2005. 8. Tanya Dubash President of marketing, Godrej Industries, India Age: 39 Her post at the $1.9 billion (sales) Indian food conglomerate grew out of real-world experience. When an ill-fated joint venture with PROCTER & GAMBLE ended in the mid-990s, she got on-the-job training running the brands that continued with Godrej. She also led an early attempt to brand processed chicken and a chain of gourmet stores. The eldest daughter of billionaire Adi Godrej, she holds a Brown University degree in economics and political science and did the advanced management program at the Harvard Business School.
Summary Mentors have been described as influential senior members of the organization with experience and knowledge which can be of assistance to junior protégés. Mentors provide training, information, political savvy, support and direction to the protégés. Mentors also create visibility and credibility for protégés, they provide effective feedback in an environment of trust and open communication, mentors are often seen essential to women. Be sure to ask advice from a number of people, even if you have an official mentor. You may gain insight and advice from a diverse source. Establish a network of people who can help you and whom you can help. These people can be from work, from professional organization or from friends and family A mentoring process goes through changes as the needs of protégés and mentor change, as both parties develop, get promoted and gain experience and confidence. Don’t forget to help others along the way with your advice and time. You may be the person who gets someone started or excited about a new direction. The protégé may become a mentor herself. Action Plan Describe in what you would look for in a mentor or an advocate (personality type, gender, age, race, interest, position, departments in the company and so on. How do you plan to identify this person ? Is she or he in the company, a personal friend an acquaintance How will you approach this person as a potential advocate or mentor? Will you just seek out one person, or will you identify several people who can help you with different aspects of your career? What will your expectation be of this relationship ? What do you expect to gain ? To give? What kind of information can you provide that ma assist your mentor or advocate? (Think about the different perspectives on specific issues, points of view, information about your possible areas of expertise and skills. Are the possible negative impacts regarding your choice of mentor.
Summary Take advantage of teams and committees and volunteer for projects to increase your visibility and also develop your network. Doing so gives you a chance to stand out, especially if the team or project is endorsed by senior managements. A professional portfolio, highlighting your accomplishments and expertise, is an effective way to increase your visibility by letting other knows about your complete package. Assess which traits and skills are valuable in your organization and reflect or mirror them in your own behavior. Take advantage of opportunities to interact with senior managers, even in the hallways, elevators and other informal environments. Look around and see who is getting promoted. Learn what their skills and education are and what their general profile is. Action Plan How do individual and groups gain visibility in your organization What can you do to become more visible? (Your might write for the company newsletter, give presentation, volunteer as a team leader) How will you use your network or mentor to help increase your visibility? As to be included in key meetings, projects and committees. As for more responsibility. Analyze your organization to see if there is an area in which it can utilize your expertise, especially if you can increase productivity or reduce costs Think about how you are going to improve your skills?
Summary Relationships – based networks are more important now than ever, since in the changing workplace your next job or lead will probably be through your network. These are new roles for the new women’s network. The old boys network is based on “jumping the queue” – getting ahead by knowing people and having connections. Women’s networks level the playing field. It's your network; you have built it. No one can take it away from you. Your network should be natural, not always planned. Know and practice networking, you'll develop a strategy that works for you. Use your networks creatively to serve your needs. Technology can help you build networks, especially internationally (the internet, email, faxes and so –on) Make serendipity work for you, Enjoy meeting people for the pleasure. Put aside one day a week in which you spend an hour or two maintaining your network through phone calls, correspondence, e-mail, and more. Do it faithfully! Be sure to consider alumni associations and professional organizations, among others, to build up your network. Women can begin to create their own networks; they need not rely on an old-boys' type of network. Action Plan How do individual and groups gain visibility in your organization Assess your current network. Do you have a good relationship with a number of people who are well connected or influential? How can you augment it ? Do you frequently offer to assist others in developing their network? Do you really listen to what others are trying to do with their own careers and think of people you know who can help them? What type of network would you like to develop? Is it personal, professional or something else? Do you keep meaning to make an effort and then fail to get around to it ? Why not? Do you know about organization that would be helpful to plan events. Do you plan to attend various functions and then decide you “don’t feel like it” when times comes around” Dou you think the beginning of the week of several people to have lunch with or meet after work or on the weekend (people who may be helpful to your career)
Summary Develop one – on – one communications skills. Be clear and specific with you boss and your organizations about your career path and timetable. If your boss doesn’t ask you about what you want to do, tell him or her. Don’t assume others know what you want – they can’t read your mind. Be aware of how your own socialization causes you to think, act and react the way you do. Be aware also of others socialization to better understand the how’s and whys of what they do. Keep in mind that the men and women have frequently had different socialization patterns. Learning about these patterns can lead to greatly improved communication and teamwork. Start to learn leadership strategies from those you admire. Be aware that people do not always play under the same set of rules, either by coincidence or by design. You may need to brush up on how rules are developed. There are several different ways in which you can be heard your organization: in meetings, in decisions, on your team. These may depend on the situation and or the organization. Women need to practice self-promotion. Visibility increases as others know what you're doing, your accomplishments and what your potential is. Women tend to be at a disadvantage when they say "I'm~ sorry." Men do not say it as often as women do, and it may be seen as a weakness. " Women can learn to become more comfortable in challenging environments of conflict, which can be both a negative and a positive thing. It is important to learn how to prepare yourself for inevitable conflicts. It is critical to understand the environment, the players, and your own strengths and weaknesses. Negotiation is an important part of professional and personal life. There are different styles and approaches to negotiation. Women can learn to become proficient negotiators and give themselves the advantage by leveling the playing field. Also, don't underestimate your own worth and skills in negotiation. Verbal and nonverbal behaviors can be critical in forming both initial and lasting impressions. Things like intonation, content of discussion, body language, and adapting your style to your audience can greatly improve your communication success. You can develop your own style of communication through input from mentors, people you admire and your own experience. You will learn what works for you. The next generation of young people is learning from us. We must serve as effective role model for both young men and women, Action Plan Ask someone you trust to honestly evaluate your communication skills. Use it as a constructive exercise. A valued friend can help you with evaluating your body language, voice intonation, physical presence, and so forth. Do you read books attend seminars to improve your communication skills? Ask others for recommendation that has help them. Do you find yourself saying “I’m sorry” to everyone? (As in, “I’m sorry, maybe I didn’t make my instruction clear enough” or “I’m sorry, perhaps you didn’t understand”). Once you’re aware of the habit, you will probably reduce the numbers of times you say it. Almost everything is negotiation. How do you plan to improve your negotiation skills Try to sit in on negotiations, Observe others who are successful negotiators. There are different approaches and see which one works for you.
Summary Delegate, even if it means having to give up task you like. Remember, what is routine for you is challenging for others, Give details when you delegate. Let others know your time constraints. Think about what is involved in accepting a volunteer task or event before you commit to it. Consider how much time it will take and if it will fulfill what your interest and needs are. It is important to build fun and leisure time into living. Otherwise you risk being less effective or productive in your career and personal life. Play should be a comfortable opportunity to try new things to relieve stress, not yet another outlet in which to be a over-achiever. Family – friendly benefits may be available at your organizations. Talk to people especially women who have been able to take advantage of some of these benefits and still be successful. If possible, identify potential bosses who are more in touch with balance issues in their own careers and in those of their employees. Develop a network of people with whom you can share meal preparation, child care and other activities in order to give yourself a break. Technology allows greater freedom in the workplace with faxes, cellular phones, internet, video conferencing and email, but with greater flexibility comes less defined distinctions between work time and leisure time. Action Plan What would make your life more balanced? More time, more help, Better organizations? Who can help you achieve these goals? If you had several hours free just for yourself, what would you do? How do you plan to find this time? (As friends or family, develop a “support group” and so on) How ill you develop an effective networks? How will you help others find this time? Who and what can help you work smarter no harder? Do you feel guilty if you do things for yourself occasionally? Why? How can you begin to enjoy more and feel less guilty?
Summary Women frequently hesitate to take risks out of fear -- fear of failure, or fear of being too old, not smart, or not talented enough. It's difficult to take the first step. We need to get used to the feeling of some discomfort in order to move on to our next level of accomplishment. Accomplishment as a result of stretching ourselves and taking some moderate risk is empowering. We are our own worst enemies when we allow self-doubt to keep us from challenging ourselves. We frequently need to ask ourselves if we want to try to master something new. Although there is always a learning curve and the opportunity to make mistakes, we will eventually be able to master the skill. Remember the four P’s: practice, performance, persistence, patience! Being assertive is a critical skill. We have to speak up for what we need or want, but not take it too personally if it leads to conflict. We must identify what we are uncomfortable or insecure about, then set up an action plan to address it. Sometimes we need to take a risk and leave a bad situation after we have identified the problems and made an honest, attempt to rectify the situation. It's important to have an effective network and a supportive environment to move on. Action Plan What have you been dying to try but never gotten around to doing? Why not? Do you have a "support group" of people to encourage you? Do you surround yourself with positive people? Is there a practical reason that you don't always reach your expectations (insufficient experience or education, for example)? Analyze what is holding you back. In which situation can you begin to practice assertiveness?
Summary A combination of visibility, effective networks, and mentors frequently helps people understand one another, and consequently work more effectively in their organizations. A colleague or friend can serve as your "press agent" and contribute to your visibility and credibility via effective promotion. You can do the same thing for a friend. Examine the qualities and skills of successful people and emulate them. Look beyond traditional jobs and job descriptions. It is also important to know and understand your own abilities, interests and limitations. Women still need to do it better than their male colleagues, with no room for mistakes. There, can be no excuses for people making assumptions or" doubting their ability to attain success. Women need a change of pitch, more than one operating style. We need to change gears. We don't always "get it." Women need to level the playing field. Action Plan How are you going to learn about the politics in your own organization? (Ask a mentor an advocate? Keenly observe "' which people are getting ahead and what they're doing?) What steps are you going to take to begin to become more politically astute? Increase your visibility? Establish a working relationship with a senior or highly respected manager? Expand your network?
