Tagung zum Sammlungsmanagement
Hamburg 10´th of June 2013
a collaborative approach towards
translation and implementation
2. Why?
• During the time in many ways a common
history and overlapping and connected
Cultural Heritage
• There are stories that need to be told
• Strengthen the Nordic perspectives in the
European collaboration…
• …and by that strenghten the European
collaboration as a whole
6. Finland
Pilot museums delivered data to the National Digital
Library of Finland in 2011
Numerous inconsistencies in the museum
cataloguing
Different CMSs cause most of the inconsistencies
in metadata
Some problems solved by a harvesting tool LIDO,
but not all
The main outputs 2012-2015:
Enterprise architecture for museum sector
Development of cataloging
New unified Collection Management System for
museo 2015
Development of museum sector’s interface in
National Digital Library
Outputs of Museum 2015 are made in working
groups
7. Working group for cataloging
primary aim: harmonize museum cataloging
draw up a process description for cataloging
create platform-independent and
standardized cataloging instructions based on
SPECTRUM
find a common consensus of classifications
museo 2015
systems for museums to describe the objects that
are chosen to catalogue recommendations of the use of ontologies and
controlled vocabularies
8. Norway
Increased knowledge of, and attention to collections management
The Ministry of Culture has asked the Arts Council for a
broader plan for collections management in norwegian museums.
We believe a comprehensive standard will support such a plan
and contribute to:
• a common understanding of challenges and tasks in the museums
• improve the quality of practical work being done in museums
• better documentation
• better museum software
• easier access to relevant information on collections management
bibliotek, arkiv, m m.
– Tekniska standarder av teknisk, icke-beskrivande karaktär,
några konceptuella
– ”Harvesting-schema”-standarder. I museisektorn är LIDO
ledande ”skörd-schema”, medan bilden är mer varierad i
biblioteks- och arkivsektorn.
12. Beskrivande standarder
Domänspecifika:
Arkiv:
sektorerna.
Bibliotek:
− Olika specifikationer för MARC, liksom MODS.
− RDA (Resource Description and Access) modellen för att hantera semantisk webb
och länkade databehov.
Museer:
− Ett antal beskrivande metadata standarder används bl a: CDWA, LIDO, museumdat,
metadata oftast aggregeras i LIDO.
13. Konceptuella standarder:
Museer:
• CIDOC CRM
CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model (CRM) antogs
formellt som en internationell standard (ISO-standard)
antogs formellt den 12 september 2006.
Bibliotek:
• FRBR
FRBR Functional Requirements for bibliographic records:
modellen integrerades i CIDOC CRM-modellen.
15. Interoperabilitet
.
18. Resultaten av Digisams arbete ska vara
skalbara och användbara för hela
kulturarvsområdet
20. Alla statliga institutioner som samlar, bevarar
och tillgängliggör kulturarvsmaterial och
kulturarvsinformation ska ha en plan för
digitalisering och tillgänglighet.
Planer
28. • Why choose
• SPECTRUM?
• It already exists!
• It is in use, has been tested and is continuously
developed
• It is maintained by in an active organization, Collections
Trust
• There is a partner program and cooperation on further
development
• SPECTRUM has an international community of users
• It is linked to accreditation, benchmarks etc.
• SPECTRUM compliancy serves as a guarantee for
quality museum software
29. • Who will benefit?
• a standard makes life more predictable – from job descriptions to software
• requirements
• easier to plan, monitor and document museum work
• … and how?
• Main target group: museum leaders and
• professionals because
• easier to define need for resources and prioritize
• information and resources on collections management at hand for
professionals
• possible to communicate experiences with a common reference
• easier to exchange competence and knowledge when everybody “speaks
the same
• language”
• documentation is readable across institutions – enables coordinated
collecting
30. • statistics and reports based on common understanding
of prosedures and
• documentation – gives solid basis for measurements
• the Arts Council
• stable framework for information and resources on our
web site
• provides ready referencees and requirements for
different projects we fund
• provides a theoretical framework for training, courses,
education
• provides common ground for cooperation with other
countries
31. • provides descriptions of workflow in museums –
ready to be implemented in CMS
• museum software developers
• provides well defined and described information
elements required in documentation
• has a system of testing and approving CMSs
• is LIDO compatible
• third party developers gets access to information
definitions – easier to make apps(?)
32. • …implementing
• SPECTRUM
• As a comprehensive standard for collections management – SPECTRUM
has
• the potential to be the back bone of our plan for collections management –
aims
• and priorities can be tied to procedures, results can be measured
• SPECTRUM is presented and linked to a whole range of resources, internal
and
• external at Collections Link – we hope to provide much the same kind of
service
• on our web site (Advice, Policies and legal advice etc., «How to…» videos
and
• descriptions)
• We can probably implement SPECTRUM directly through our digital
• infrastructure (since almost all norwegians museums under the Ministry of
• Culture use the same CMS)
33. • Standards to regulate infrastructure:
• Museum work – Primus and Statistics
• • SPECTRUM
• • CEN-standards
• • Existing norwegian standards
• Ontology and data exchange formats for museum objects – Primus
• and Statistics
• • CIDOC CRM
• • LIDO
• • ESE/EDM
• • Dublin Core
• …vocabularies and authorities – CultureHUB
• • SKOS
• • Thesaurus
• • Problem: system turns into a standard of its own….
34. • Projects 2013-
• Conservation module in Primus
• Module for planning and documenting maintenance of cultural historical
buildings in Primus
• Standard and software system requirements for museum logistics
• Building an Arts Council sub site – presenting the SPECTRUM procedures,
appendix
• Start producing and linking to different resources from the procedures
• Statistics – framing todays numbers in SPECRUM terminology
• One week course training museum staff to make their museum work more
efficently and to better
• integrate documentation, dissemination conservation and collections care
• Important to support digitization, long term preservation og digital material,
legacy data, etc.
35. • Ultimate goals
• RELEVANT MUSEUMS
• SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF COLLECTIONS
• WIDER USE OF COLLECTIONS
• We are looking to see if SPECTRUM can function as the
glue
• between all the different professions involved in
collections
• management witin one museum, between museums and
maybe even
• to help integrate collections and collection work with the
rest of
• museum activities.
36. • Testing and
• evaluation
• Feedback from relevant professional
bodies
• Testing Spectrum in selected museums
• Evaluation of benefit and adaptability
• National hearing?
37. Conclusions
• numerous inconsistencies in the museum
• cataloging
• different CMSs cause most of the
inconsistencies
• in metadata
• some problems solved by a harvesting
tool
• LIDO, but not all

During 2013 Sweden holds tjhe presidency of the nordic council of ministers.
Digisam was tasked to arrange a conference on the theme Digistisaton.
We gathered a Nordic think tank in oder ti discuss themes and praticipants and the base for a suisainable nordic collaboration.
That the conference should focus on linked open data was easy to settle.
Right now we´re dicsussing with the nordi council and the swedish presidency how we could pave the way for a future cooperation.
The min direction is to be a network that officially sails under the flag och of t the nordic council of ministers and that follows the prsidency periods in combination with a task and people diriven network that follows the guestions.
That network could also be used an the suitable platform for collaboration voer translating and implementing SPECTRUM in the Nordic region.
A finnish initiative met the needs in Sweden and Norway and we decided to meet in Helsinki to share are thoughts and see if there were common goals to build a collaboration from.
Nationally we are in different phases…
