fifth generation of twisted pair wiring
2. Objectives
After the lesson, students should be able
to perform the following tasks:
– Identify the parts of a CAT5 network cable
– Identify the two wiring schemes of CAT5
– Be able to make a functioning CAT5 cable
– Be able to test a CAT5 cable
4. Safety
– Wear your safety glasses
– Be mindful of the sharp edges on wire
strippers and crimping tools
When working with cables always remember to…

7. 568A
CAT5 Wiring Schemes
There isn’t difference
between 568A or 568B
concerning connectivity
or performance just as
long as both ends of the
cable are of the same
wiring scheme
568A:
Commonly used in government/
federal buildings and some
large commercial
installations
568B:
This is the most commonly
used wiring scheme and found
in most residential
installations
568B
8. Making a CAT5 Cable
1. Use the wire cutters to score the cable and remove the jacket
2. Use the green pull string to expose 1 inch of wire
3. Then cut the wires with the wire cutter below the point of
the original score
4. Use the wire cutters to cut the excess jacket and shielding
9. Making a CAT5 Cable
5. Unwind the 4 pairs of wires
6. Straighten out each wire and order the pairs according to
your wiring scheme
7. Cut the wires, leaving approximately ¼ inch of wire
8. Insert the wires into the RJ-45 jack
9. Place the jack into the wire crimper and squeeze the crimper
handle
11. When TESTING a CAT5e Cable, you will need:
