Media studies transition work (1)
1. AS Media Studies
When you start the AS media course in September you will immediately start work on the coursework unit- The Magazine Industry. This
coursework is worth 50% of your final mark. For your coursework you are asked to research, plan, construct and evaluate the front cover,
contents and double page spread for a new music magazine. You will learn how to take photographs in a studio and learn the tools of both
Photoshop and Indesign to construct your product. You also keep your own blog on our site heathenmedia.co.uk to record all your progress
and development. The two tasks below form part of the research element of this coursework and will go towards your final mark.
For task 1 you need to consider the genre, images, colours, font and language choices to analyse how the two magazine front covers appeal
to their particular target audience.
2. The masthead is shattered which fits the ‘rock’ genre of the
magazine it's edgy, unpolished and links and is related to
rebellious teenagers, who are apart of the target audience
Target audience heavy rock fans. Several
mainstream rock, metal and heavy rock artists
are featured such as Panic At The Disco and
Paramore.
Masthead is bold and
shattered implies that the
whole magazine is cut
edge, hardcore and uncut
The colours black
and white are mainly
used throughout the
cover. With the target
audience being rock
lovers, and the genre
rock being associated
with dark colours, the
target audience will
instantly attracted to
the cover and its
sombre vibe.
Black and white colour
scheme for simplistic effect
The artists are blocking/covering the
the masthead. This is has been done
to put the artists in the spotlight. This
connates the magazine is well
established.
The barcode is at the bottom of the page to show
its not important to the reader and doesn't take
away the attention from the pain information
When the colour red is
used, it's used against white
writing to make it stand out.
Links to the conventions of
rock as they represent
themselves as frightening
noisy people.
“FREE” in capitals is clearly gonna attract
attention because people love freebies . This puff
really stands out because it's against red
splattered paint.
The masthead is
in capitals which
are used to
exclaim/shout
something.
3. The boombox being held implies that
the magazine is targeted at music
lovers and the genre is ultimately
music.
Vibrant colours such as blue, pink and yellow engage
the magazine's fun loving charismatic target audience
‘Free Mix
CD’
implies the
target
audience
are
hardcore
music
lovers.
Image features P Diddy, a famous Hip Hop artist, and
Felix a famous dance artist This Implies that the
magazine ‘Mixmag’ goal is to appeal to an audience
that enjoys various genres of music.
“The world's biggest dance music
and clubbing magazine” Aimed at a
club/house music audience
The artists names are the only
wording in block capitals on the
whole cover. This done so the
focus is on the two artists.
Blue, pink and yellow colour scheme is
used to give a summery, happy positive
vibe to the whole magazine.
Mixmag uses bright bold contrasting
colours. The bright colours and the
boldness appeals to youth
audiences.
The boldness of the fonts used make the colours pop out of the
magazine cover more and attains attention of the target audience.
The name ‘mixmag’
implies the magazine
focuses on dance
music and the
concept of DJ artists
mixing music and
tracks on turntables,
this will intrigue the
target audience
because they will
want to know what
the magazine has to
say or suggest about
dance/club music
Typography
of the
masthead is
written in
display font
with curvy
typeface
giving a
sophisticated
look
4. Task 02:
For the second task you need to research and create a powerpoint presentation on two magazine companies. Again this will form part of the
research element of your final mark.
Use the following prompts to help you:
Music magazine Institutions research- Two magazine companies, 1 large (Bauer or IPC) and 1 small (Future, BBC Worldwide)
★ Who are the company?
★ What is their company history?
★ What publications do they manage?
★ A detailed look at 2 of these publications and their target audience. At least 1 of these publications should be a music
magazine.
Both induction tasks should be completed and uploaded to your media blog (we will set this up for you in September!) by Friday 23rd
September 2016.
