G. L’Abate agINFRA International Knowledge Fair - Agricultural Data Interoperability Interest Group session
The Agricultural Research Council –
Research Centre for Agrobiology
and Pedology (CRA-ABP), has for
many years developed soil
survey, mapping, and
informatization methodologies.
Several thousands of soil
observations have been stored on
a Ms Access database. This
Information System was the
starting point to develop the
Vocabularies for Soil Data as

6. agINFRA work to publish new LOD vocabularies for soil data
G. L’Abate agINFRA International Knowledge Fair - Agricultural Data Interoperability Interest Group session
In the European legislation, INSPIRE is the
reference standard for soil data organization and
dissemination among European citizens and
institutions.
Since agINFRA is an EC project, the partners
agreed that INSPIRE should be adopted as the
starting point for a LOD metadata vocabulary for
soil data.
INSPIRE is a good starting point for both:
An RDF metadata vocabulary, as it defines
entities and attributes / relationships;
The identification of KOSs that need to be
published, as it defines “registers” of values.

16. Conclusions
agINFRA International Knowledge Fair - Agricultural Data Interoperability G. L’Abate Interest Group session
The adoption of LOD technologies are expected to
improve the interoperability of soil data.
Providing tools and methodologies for enabling the
soil data-related vocabularies as linked data, the
agINFRA project is enhancing the interoperability
not only between soil data sources but also
between soil data sources and other types of data
sources.
The publication of additional soil-related INSPIRE
compliant vocabularies will be a big step forward
and will represent one of the novel contributions
that agINFRA makes to the agricultural data
management community.

Editor's Notes
Good evening ladies and gentlemens,
ISO 11074:2005. Soil quality – Vocabulary. International Organization for Standardization.
INSPIRE Thematic Working Group Soil. D2.8.III.3 INSPIRE Data Specification on Soil – Draft Technical Guidelines; 201
Inspire pointed out the question of interoperability
Cleaning up SISI metadata elements, classes and properties using INSPIRE as sieves to filter
The SISI relational datatabase was mapped by Tables (28) and Fields (880).
To every Field a Natural language descriptor (English) was defined and an example value reported.
Beside the mapping, two database tables containing referenced values (decodifiche - 8892 records) and codification terms (Abbinamenti: used for italian and english reports - 388 records), were the base to populate the vocabulary.
The INSPIRE Registry and the Agricultural Thesaurus by the National Agricultural Library were checked for matchings.
When an ExactMatch was found the descriptor was adopted as Alternative English Label of the concept and the ExactMatch used as Preferred label.
Broader themes were defined according the INSPIRE Implementing Rules and the SISI application schema.
Regarding KOSs, the reference vocabularies have been already published as LOD. GEMET has been published as SKOS and mapped to AGROVOC; SoilThes has been published as SKOS and is linked to GEMET; the USDA Soil Taxonomy is part of the National Agricultural Library Thesaurus (NALT), which is published as LOD. For the spatial aspect, soil data can rely on many advanced RDF standards, mainly in the framework of the EU INSPIRE Directive.
