2. WHAT IS THE AUDIO-LINGUAL METHOD
The audio-lingual method advised that students be
taught a language directly, without using the students'
native language to explain new words or grammar in
the target language. The audio-lingual method didn’t
focus on teaching vocabulary, the teacher drilled
students in the use of grammar.
Lessons in the classroom focus on the correct imitation of
the teacher by the students, not only are the students
expected to produce the correct output, but attention is
also paid to correct pronunciation.
3. CHARACTERISTICS:
Speaking and listening competence preceded reading and
writing competence.
Students practice particular patterns of language through
structured dialogue and drill until response is automatic.
Structured patterns in language are taught using repetitive
drills. The emphasis is on having students produce error free
utterances.
Only everyday vocabulary and sentences are taught.
Mother tongue is discouraged in the classroom.
The three crucial elements in learning: a stimulus, a response
and reinforcement.
