10. Climate
• The California weather can often be compared to the
Mediterranean, due to heat, dry summers and mild, wet
winters. On shore, the temperature during the year
varies from 40° F (4.4° C) to 70° F (21.1° C) and 80° F
(26.7° C). Further inland, the summer is hot and dry, and
at higher altitudes, one can perceive the stations so well
marked, with cold and snowy winters. The contrast is
quite remarkable in the two largest cities of the state's,

Francisco is famous for its fog - especially in the
summer, and Los Angeles is known for its sunny days

• What is now California was founded by several
Native American tribes before being explored by
a number of European expeditions throughout
the 16th and 17th centuries. Then it was claimed
by the Spanish Empire as part of Alta California
in greater territory of New Spain. Alta California
became a part of Mexico in 1821 , following its
successful war for independence , but would be
ceded to the United States in 1848, after the
Mexican-American War. The western part of Alta
California was organized as soon as the state of
California, which was admitted as a state on 31
September 9, 1850. The California Gold Rush
from 1848 led to dramatic social and
demographic change, with large scale
immigration from the U.S. and abroad and an
economic growth that accompanies it.

• California's diverse geography ranges from the
Pacific Coast in the west , to the Sierra Nevada
in the east - Forest Redwood - Douglas -fir forest
of the northwest, to the Mojave Desert areas in
the southeast. The center of the state is
dominated by Central Valley , a major
agricultural area . California contains the highest
and lowest points in the contiguous United
States (Mount Whitney and Death Valley) , and
has the third- longest coastline of all states (after
Alaska and Florida) . Earthquakes are common
because of the state 's location along the Pacific
Ring of Fire : . About 37,000 are recorded
annually , but most are too small to feel.

vegetables. Other important contributors to its
