Social Perceptions and
Stereotypes
The impact of media on first impressions
and personal style from the 1960's to now,
and how it affects our socialisation with
others.
Amy Johnson
Age group/samples
• The first questionnaire group consisted of older
people between the age of 60 and 80. Little to no
interest in fashion. They did not class themselves
to have a personal style.
• The second group were people aged 21 – 27.
Didn’t follow fashion, except two females who
enjoy keeping up with trends.
• The third group consisted of a few fashion
students. Smallest group to avoid a bias.
“Gothic Girl”
• “Unapproachable” and “intimidating”
• Her smile suggests she is approachable and
friendly, which is why the people taking the
questionnaire reacted well to her.
“Grunge Guy”
• “Lazy”, “unreliable” and “scruffy” were
used to describe him by the older age
group.
“Burlesque Lady”
• Younger age groups thought she was unique
and would be interesting to talk to.
• Older group thought she was “too out there”.

Editor's Notes

  1. People browsing their mobile phones whilst on public transport have been referred to as “zombies” and has sparked a feeling of wanton longing for the return of this nostalgia and a lack of pressure to keep up with constant media feeds.
  2. Consequently due to this rise in technology use, social perception is more important to us than ever especially in terms of our aesthetic – how we look, particularly on how our clothing is seen to define us. There is an abundance of hypercritical fashion and lifestyle online publications, social media accounts and blogs that pass judgement on the clothing that celebrities wear, as well as the street-style of the everywoman/everyman; it seems that no matter how we dress it will never be fully accepted.
  3. Goth imagery can be seen to look very threatening. Stereotypes associated with Gothic culture are that they tend to be very pale, have a difficult time during school being bullied and being stared at by strangers for their unique dress sense. The British media used this Goth stereotype in the reportage of the Lancaster murder to gain sympathy, administering the idea of an outcast to pluck at the heartstrings.
  4. When the media ran out of stories to report on, they used stories which had nothing to do with either subculture and instead used deceptive broadcasts to link the youths to a number of societal problems: teen pregnancy and methamphetamines to name a few. And this second newspaper using the word Mod to describe a tragic teen falling to his death which had nothing to do with the Mods and Rockers controversy. Rockers wearing leather jackets – a man wearing a leather jacket wouldn’t be look at twice these days.
  5. Age groups/sample
  6. The way a person dresses doesn’t always necessarily reflect their personality and to support my research, I wanted to conduct a questionnaire to enlighten my views on social perceptions. Asking the subjects to describe themselves in 5 words and seeing if young/old could guess. Asking three different groups – younger groups and an older group. Some interested in fashion, some aren’t. the pics above are a selection of the 21 pictures that I took in Manchester.
  7. Respctabilty? Bear in mind age (60 – 80)
  8. It is my belief that using the internet and media in terms of expanding our knowledge of Fashion and Culture is a good thing as it encourages openness to all styles and in the future more and more styles will be accepted.
