  3. 3. Making the Connection <ul><li>Purpose of this presentation is to think outside the garden box and to think of other options of biocontrol, charismatic megafauna. Utilizing vertebrates as biocontrol in gardens make gardens more engaging, dynamic and family friendly. Then, if you have animals mixed with plants, you need safe products( insecticides, fungicides, etc.) that ensure their well-being along with the staff’s and visitors , OK not the visitors. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Conservatories a Different Animal <ul><li>Most Conservatories need to be safe for visitors, staff and in some cases for butterflies and other display animals. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Companion Products <ul><li>Soaps, Coffee Grounds, Vegetable Oils and Hydrogen Peroxide. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Bio-Wash Soap <ul><li>In Mexico, they call it S a bon Majico, (M a gic Soap). Some are even calling it H o ly Water. The program, which was started almost 10 years ago, offers bags of used coffee grounds for composting — free of charge — to nurseries or anyone who asks for it. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Hydrogen Peroxide as a Fungicide <ul><li>A safe fungicide used instead of copper sulfate. </li></ul><ul><li>Can be used as an algaecide, bactericide, and virucide as well </li></ul>
  9. 9. Pam Olive Oil for Scale <ul><li>Does it have to be extra-virgin? </li></ul><ul><li>For easy to reach scale. </li></ul><ul><li>Instead mixing up a gallon sprayer, just grab a aerosol can. </li></ul><ul><li>Works in my Garden on scale on bamboo, cycads and palms. </li></ul>
  10. 10. Ant Baits <ul><li>Products that are safe in small quantities around animals. </li></ul>
  11. 11. Roaches <ul><li>Serious issue in Conservatories, many birds, lizards, frogs and toads will eat them, if they see them. Amdro works well and does not hurt animals in small quantities. </li></ul>
  12. 12. Snails and Slugs <ul><li>Sluggo- Active ingredient baited Iron Phosphate, safe around animals. </li></ul><ul><li>Snail-Eating Snake, add interest and excitement for visitors </li></ul>

Coconut Coir- Mulch for Healthier Plants <ul><li>Natural Coconut Fibers C o ir Gro-Brick is made of 100% coconut fibers which can be used as a renewable organic growing medium or as an alternative of peat moss to improve soil conditions. Not only does it hold moisture longer, it also stays porous, and resists compacting! </li></ul>

  15. 15. Bufo marinus - Cane Toad <ul><li>Roaches are serious issue in conservatories, you need to battle them on all fronts, including, geckoes beer traps, parasitic wasps and with baits such as Amdro. Toads are nocturnal like roaches. </li></ul>

  17. 17. Anole Lizards <ul><li>Anolis species from the Amazon are ant-eaters, almost exclusively! </li></ul>
  18. 18. Frogs <ul><li>Poison dart and red-eyed tree frogs are great for small insects such as ants and tree crickets. </li></ul>

Turn your Garden into a Zoo ! <ul><li>As we start the 21 st century, Gardens, Zoos and Museums have the opportunity to become hybrids such as </li></ul><ul><li>“ Ecoparks” and that will truly represent the </li></ul><ul><li>“ whole” natural world, thus connecting people, animals and plants! </li></ul>
