Rainy Days
                                              by: Kyla Cruz

When our wings are not yet fully grown and our mind is still not capable of handling what we have,
sometimes, we learn our lesson the hard way.
Mr. Thomas hurried himself to room 143 in the 15-storey hospital building. He was panting when he
reached the room. He saw his wife and she seemed lifeless. Standing beside her bed was Daniel, who was still
shocked on what happened. He hugged him closely to calm his trembling body and racing heartbeat and to
reassure him that everything would be fine. When he already gained his composure, Daniel told the story to his
father as how everything started like a flashback in a movie.

Daniel is a 10-year old white skinned boy. He was one of the outstanding pupils in his class. His father
worked as a seaman and his mother stayed at home with him. His parents were really supportive to his studies.

One day, he went home with overflowing bliss. If he could only reach their house with a single step, he
would do so just to inform his mother what recognition he got from school.

“Mom, I got the first honors for the first quarter in school!” he hurried to his mother showing his ribbon.
His face lightened up, very excited to witness the reaction of his mother.

Her face overflowed with joy and pride. She hugged him tightly and then she scratched his hair. That was
what she used to do when he did something great. “Good job, son. I am proud of you.” Come on, let’s get inside.”

“Mom, can we call Dad?” his eyes were still full with enthusiasm and excitement.

“Sure son, I am certain he would be very glad,” his Mom uttered as she dialled on her phone.

Daniel excitedly called his dad on the phone. His dad was very proud of him. Before there talk was over,
his father promised him a new gadget as his reward for his performance in school. After a week, a package arrived
home. Daniel was very excited to open the box for he just couldn’t wait for his new gadget. It was an iphone10, the
latest phone made by the Apple Company. He played the games and felt so inquisitive for the new features of the
phone.

Days passed, Daniel had changed. He did his assignments in haste which before he did with diligence. His
mother needed to go his room because he was not responding to his call. He no longer played with the kids in the
neighborhood during weekend which he used to do.

Daniel was already in the half of the quarter when his mother read a note in his diary that stated, “Daniel
lacks interest in his lessons these previous weeks. He has been acting like his mind is preoccupied.” Attached to
this note were his test papers in four different subjects. Three of her quizzes were failed. In the case of Daniel, this
incident is very peculiar to his mother.

One day his mother dropped by in the school not only to fetch him but also to talk to his adviser.

“Mommy, you don’t have to do this. I know I can still keep up my grades.”

She looked down to him and said “Son, don’t worry. I just want to talk to subject teachers. This is for you.”

“Mommy, can I borrow my gadget? Please?” he said with a convincing look.

“Ok, for one condition. Just stay here so that I can see you.”

“Sure, mom,” he nodded with an assurance to his face. “Thank you,” he added.

His mommy went to meet his teachers.
While his mommy was gone, he was wearing his earphone and was busy playing games in his gadget.
After a while, he felt thirsty. He had learned that her mother used to keep a bottle of water in their car. Without
asking her consent, he decided to go the parking lot where their car is and to get it.

He was running on his way when suddenly a car was approaching very fast to the parking lot. To his
surprise, two quick hands rescued him abruptly. He could have hit by the car if he was not pushed by someone.
When he turned around he saw his mom lying on the ground with blood on her shoulders and head.

Things happened so fast. Like a trailer on a movie. He was chocked on what he saw. Tears conquered his
eyes that he couldn’t scream nor move. Fear surmounted his emotion. In the end, shame enveloped his heart,
blaming himself for what happened to his mom. His gadget which he was still holding unknowingly fell to the
ground.

He didn’t know how they were brought in the hospital. All he remembered was his seemingly lifeless
mother lying on a stretcher which was carried to the emergency room.

While he was still on his arms, “Da- Daddy, I- I am so- sorry. It was my entire fault. I shou-should have listened to
mom. If I could only uhh-uhh ma- make things back...,” he uttered in between sobs.
“Sshhhh. Come down, it was not your fault, ok?” wiping the tears that kept on falling on his cheeks. “No
one wanted this to happen. It was an accident. Your mother will be fine,” as he whispered silent prayers for his
wife.

His Father just arrived home from Europe where he had his work as a seaman. He wanted to surprise his
wife and son when he arrived home, unfortunately, he was him who was being surprised on what happened.

Praise God that Mrs. Thomas was brought immediately to the hospital so it prevented damage to her
internal organs. After two weeks, she was allowed to be released from the hospital. They have learned from a
police report that the driver of the car lost his break so the accident happened. The driver shouldered the
hospitalization, though. On the other hand, Daniel was already forgiven by his mother.

Three weeks had already passed like rainy days in their lives. Like after a rain, it left a rainbow of lesson to
their hearts, especially to Daniel’s. A lesson to honor his parents and to value the people that he loves than the
things that he has. Because a gadget might come and become obsolete but a family will always be a family no
matter what happens and how long time passes by.
