2. DARJEELING
One of the most famous hill stations of India; is
located in the state of West Bengal. The
Darjeeling town is located at an elevation of
about 6710 feet. The word Darjeeling has come
from Tibetan word, meaning a place of
thunderbolt.

Clothing : Light woolen for summer and heavy woolens for winter.
Best season : March to mid-June and September to mid-December.
5. TOY TRAIN
It was built between 1878 and 1881 and is about 86 kilometers long.
The elevation level is from about 100 m (328 ft) at Siliguri to about
2,200 meters (7,218 ft) at Darjeeling.
It is still powered by steam locomotives. Modern diesel engines are
used for Darjeeling’s mail train.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, nicknamed the "Toy Train", is a 2
ft (610 mm) narrow-gauge railway from New Jalpaiguri (6 km from
Siliguri ) to Darjeeling in West Bengal, run by the Indian Railways.
Since 1999 the train has been a World Heritage List as listed
by UNESCO.
6. HISTORY OF DARJEELING TOY TRAIN
• 1879 - Construction is begun by the Darjeeling steam Tramway
Company
• 1881 - On 3 July the lines is officially opened to Darjeeling.
• 1882 - Four loops and four reverse ( zig-zags) were constructed
• 1885 - A short extension for goods traffic is opened to the bazaar
at Darjeeling.
• 1891 - Darjeeling station was enlarged and rebuilt.
• 1896 - Kurseong gets a new station
7. WORLD HERITAGE SITE
• DHR was declared a World Heritage site by
UNESCO in 1999, only the second railway to
have this honor bestowed upon it
10. Toy Train Joyride - Darjeeling to Ghum
& Back
Toy train joy rides operate from Darjeeling Railway
Station. It's a 2-hour round trip from Darjeeling up
to Ghum and back covering a total distance of
14kms.
11. Toy Train Jungle Safari - Siliguri to
Rangtong & Return
• This round trip toy train safari (3 hours)
operates between Siliguri Junction and
Rangtong Station.
12. New Jalpaiguri (NJP) to Darjeeling
• The train (no. 52541) leaves NJP at 8:30am and
reaches Darjeeling at 3:35pm (Monday,
Wednesday, Friday). Total distance is 88kms. The
return train (no. 52540) departs Darjeeling at 8am
and reaches NJP at 3:10pm (Tuesday, Thursday,
Saturday).
13. KURSEONG TO DARJEELING
• The train (no. 52545) leaves Kurseong at 3pm
reaching Darjeeling at 5:50pm. Total distance is
31kms. The down train (no. 52544) departs
Darjeeling at 10:15am reaching Kurseong at
13:10pm.
14. INFORMATION
• The joyride from Darjeeling to Ghum and back
includes a 10 minute stop at Batasia loop and 30
minutes stoppage at Ghum Museum. The entrance
fee to the museum is included in the fare.
• The joyride from Siliguri Junction passes through tea
estates and includes a 30 minutes stop at the
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Photo Gallery in Sukna.
• The Jungle Safari trains stop for lunch at Tindharia,
where stunning valley views can be enjoyed, before
returning to Siliguri.

16. RESERVATION
• Reservations for travel on the toy train (both daily
services and joyrides) can be made at Indian Railways
computerized reservation counters, or on the Indian
Railways website. It's advisable to book in advance, as
the trains fill up quickly.
• The station code for New Jalpaiguri is NJP, and
Darjeeling DJ. For joyrides from Darjeeling you'll have
to book with DJ as the "From" station and DJR as the
"To" station.
