It’s not just a place where you get to learn Einstein’s Theory of
Relativity. It’s also a place where you can think beyond the
classroom. Hence we say, SCHOOL IS COOL!
SCHOOL IS COOL 03
W
e must have read through
newspapers published as
the written documentary
of news reports on a daily basis.
Those working in a press industry
like journalists or media persons
have this huge undertaking for serv-
ing the entire society
.
A society is famous for its lofty
gossip on “unactual truth” thus, the
disintegration of harmonious liv-
ing. “To break the news is to break
the ethics of spreading knowledge”
sounds beyond the limits of com-
mon social messages. I’ve often
come across channels that have a
pivotal role in attention to extreme
details of a mishap or social issue.
But it is believed, that these
channels are bound to break rules
inconspicuous of actual truth or de-
fecting lie. Every profession has its
own code of ethics to follow even
during an emergency
.
Similar is the press industry,
where media workers are
trained to interpret
the happenings in
an unbiased, preju-
diced manner. I
would like to start
with my disagree-
ment towards
breaking the basic
morale ahead of boundaries. It is
alright when it comes to the task of
spreading positivity among the au-
dience through interviews or dedi-
cated services meant for the uplift-
ing cause.
But they often tend to break
their “integral” value by indulging
in unwanted questions oblivious of
the sensitivity in serious
matters. That, therefore, vio-
lates the right to privacy
over individual mat-
ters reserved only for
them. Likewise, col-
lectivistic orienta-
tion is to be given
prior impor-
tance.
Certain
communal and religious sen-
timents have been offended
by “extravertive men” acting
as the influential superpow-
ers. Superpower, in this con-
text, means the exertion of
one’s dominant views on contro-
versial issues related to subjects of
major interest.
News channels also tend to
favour the majority rule say over
minorities in a democratic nation
that tends to serve the best interests
of its citizens. With our enlighten-
ment and verge towards the actual
truth, amidst ethics violations, can
we identify the right or wrong of
what is printed in papers.
Therefore, it is unforgiving
to “break the rules to break
the news”. News channels
must also ensure their ac-
countability for their ac-
tions.

Most gripping and
unforgettable story
F
irekeeper’s Daughter by Angelina Bouley is one of the most gripping and unforget-
table stories that I have read in recent times. Eighteen-year-old Daunis’s mixed her-
itage had made her feel like an outsider. Being a Fontaine (mother’s side) and a fire
keeper (father’s side) is hard as Daunis can’t balance her family life. When a new tragedy
strikes, Daunis becomes enveloped in an FBI investigation of a dangerous drug, called
meth that may be coming from Sugar Island which results in
murders.
Once she joins the operation to find out about the mur-
ders which are connected to the hallucinogenic drug meth,
she realizes that the corruption runs deeper and much clos-
er to home than she ever could have imagined. The story
revolves around the fact whether she can handle all this
and overcome the hardships with her strength and sanity
intact.
My favourite part is the conclusion which I cannot
reveal. It made me bawl my eyes out. I loved this book
because of the vivid details the author had added causing
the reader to imagine the scene to the T. This was probably
my favorite summer read. Firekeeper’s daughter is so much
more than a thriller. It shows how far the author’s love for
her culture is engraved into the books. After I picked the
book, I couldn’t stop reading it. I found myself
breathless and hard-pressed to believe that the
book was already over and my journey in the fic-
tional world as well. This book is for adults/ teens as it contains
some parts about drug use, racism, murder, and sexual assault.
However, this is one exhilarating read that can help you over-
come a reading slump any day and take you on a powerful ride.

19 medals. Three of their golds have come
from Para-Cycling. The Koreans are in the
second position with 10G, 9S, and 2B ahead

HOPING FOR MEDAL

search for a medal on the fourth day of the

The growing event ‘Cycling’ in India could-

something to
celebrate wh-
en Sri Lanka
sealed a limited-overs cricket series
victory with a game to spare against
Australia with a last-ball thriller in
Game 4. Having been sent in and re-
stricted to 258 in 49 overs, Dasun
Shanaka’s Sri Lanka lineup held its
nerve to bowl out Australia for 254 to
secure the five-match ODI series 3-1.
The last game Friday will be more
like preparation for the test series.
SLOWER DELIVERY
Australia needed 19 off the last over
bowled by skipper Shanaka, and No.
10 batter Matthew Kuhnemann (15)
hit three boundaries to get the visi-
tors’ equation down to five runs re-
quired off the last ball to keep the se-
ries alive. But he was deceived by a
slower delivery, hitting it straight up
in the air for Charith Asalanka to
catch in the covers. In the end, David
Warner’s 99 wasn’t quite enough to
get the Australians over the line af-
ter Asalanka hit a 106-ball 110 and
Dhananjaya de Silva scored 60 from
61 deliveries for Sri Lanka. Sri Lan-
ka had not beaten Australia in an ODI
series since 2010 and hadn’t won a bi-
lateral series at home against the
Australians since 1992. Australia won
the toss and made a bold call to bowl
first, a gamble which almost paid off.
SMARTLY STUMPED
Australia was on course for the tar-
get as Warner and Travis Head (27)
added 58 runs for the fifth wicket but
lost three wickets for the addition of
three runs in the space of eight de-
liveries. Part-timer de Silva removed
Head and Warner in his successive
overs, starting when he bowled Head
with the penultimate ball of the 36th.
Maheesh Theekshana (1-40) trapped
Glenn Maxwell (1) in the next over
from the other end before de Silva re-
turned and had Warner smartly
stumped by wicketkeeper Niroshan
Dickwella on the first ball of the 38th
over. Warner was unlucky to be dis-
missed one run short of his 19th ODI
hundred. The opener has not scored
an international hundred for more
than two years across all formats. De
Silva finished with 2-39 in his 10 overs
to back up his half-century during
the Sri Lankan innings. The middle-
order batter hit seven fours before
he was spectacularly caught by
Maxwell, and he combined with
Asalanka in an innings-reviving 101-
run stand.
Asalanka was the hero for
Sri Lanka with his first ODI
hundred, joining de Silva with
the total at 34-3. The tour is all
square heading into the two-match
test series, with Australia winning
the Twenty20 format 2-1 and Sri Lan-
ka taking the ODI portion. AP

SAMHITA, Class 9 A1, Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Polachery Most gripping and unforgettable story F irekeeper’s Daughter by Angelina Bouley is one of the most gripping and unforget- table stories that I have read in recent times. Eighteen-year-old Daunis’s mixed her- itage had made her feel like an outsider. Being a Fontaine (mother’s side) and a fire keeper (father’s side) is hard as Daunis can’t balance her family life. When a new tragedy strikes, Daunis becomes enveloped in an FBI investigation of a dangerous drug, called meth that may be coming from Sugar Island which results in murders. Once she joins the operation to find out about the mur- ders which are connected to the hallucinogenic drug meth, she realizes that the corruption runs deeper and much clos- er to home than she ever could have imagined. The story revolves around the fact whether she can handle all this and overcome the hardships with her strength and sanity intact. My favourite part is the conclusion which I cannot reveal. It made me bawl my eyes out. I loved this book because of the vivid details the author had added causing the reader to imagine the scene to the T. This was probably my favorite summer read. Firekeeper’s daughter is so much more than a thriller. It shows how far the author’s love for her culture is engraved into the books. After I picked the book, I couldn’t stop reading it. I found myself breathless and hard-pressed to believe that the book was already over and my journey in the fic- tional world as well. This book is for adults/ teens as it contains some parts about drug use, racism, murder, and sexual assault. However, this is one exhilarating read that can help you over- come a reading slump any day and take you on a powerful ride. HIMANSHI SINGH Ronaldo Singh Photo: AFP A nation dealing with its worst economic cri- sis and high inflation for months had something to celebrate wh- en Sri Lanka sealed a limited-overs cricket series victory with a game to spare against Australia with a last-ball thriller in Game 4. Having been sent in and re- stricted to 258 in 49 overs, Dasun Shanaka’s Sri Lanka lineup held its nerve to bowl out Australia for 254 to secure the five-match ODI series 3-1. The last game Friday will be more like preparation for the test series. SLOWER DELIVERY Australia needed 19 off the last over bowled by skipper Shanaka, and No. 10 batter Matthew Kuhnemann (15) hit three boundaries to get the visi- tors’ equation down to five runs re- quired off the last ball to keep the se- ries alive. But he was deceived by a slower delivery, hitting it straight up in the air for Charith Asalanka to catch in the covers. In the end, David Warner’s 99 wasn’t quite enough to get the Australians over the line af- ter Asalanka hit a 106-ball 110 and Dhananjaya de Silva scored 60 from 61 deliveries for Sri Lanka. Sri Lan- ka had not beaten Australia in an ODI series since 2010 and hadn’t won a bi- lateral series at home against the Australians since 1992. Australia won the toss and made a bold call to bowl first, a gamble which almost paid off. SMARTLY STUMPED Australia was on course for the tar- get as Warner and Travis Head (27) added 58 runs for the fifth wicket but lost three wickets for the addition of three runs in the space of eight de- liveries. Part-timer de Silva removed Head and Warner in his successive overs, starting when he bowled Head with the penultimate ball of the 36th. Maheesh Theekshana (1-40) trapped Glenn Maxwell (1) in the next over from the other end before de Silva re- turned and had Warner smartly stumped by wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella on the first ball of the 38th over. Warner was unlucky to be dis- missed one run short of his 19th ODI hundred. The opener has not scored an international hundred for more than two years across all formats. De Silva finished with 2-39 in his 10 overs to back up his half-century during the Sri Lankan innings. The middle- order batter hit seven fours before he was spectacularly caught by Maxwell, and he combined with Asalanka in an innings-reviving 101- run stand. Asalanka was the hero for Sri Lanka with his first ODI hundred, joining de Silva with the total at 34-3. The tour is all square heading into the two-match test series, with Australia winning the Twenty20 format 2-1 and Sri Lan- ka taking the ODI portion.
