Peoria Analysis
The choice of Peoria, IL – an IRS office in the Midwest to set the novel is anything but coincidental.
Apart from being one of the very few rather unpopular American institutions, it is also, largely,
extremely efficient, which is aptly summarized by the sardonic but true observation often ascribed
to Benjamin Franklin (who used it in the current form in a letter to Jean–Baptiste Leroy in 1789 but
dating back to Daniel Defoe's Political History of the Devil written in 1726), that "in this world
nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes". But the inevitability of tax burden placed
on an average citizen is not the only thing that is characteristic of the U.S. Inland Revenue: dealing
with millions of tax returns and myriads of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The latter expression is a direct quote from 1 Corinthians 13:11, clearly implying something akin to
a quasi–religious "awakening" whereby a self–professed slacker and 'wastoid', ironically through his
inability to pay attention, evolves into a full–on accountant. At this point, in order to further explore
the theme of boredom in The Pale King, let us revisit the definition of boredom itself – after all, to
say that the novel is simply a book about boredom would be a serious understatement. The Pale
King is not just about the psychological side of this phenomenon, it actually reaches much deeper –
the religious references described above clearly point to acedia, a concept associated with monastic
hermits. This is not just weltschmertz, ennui, malaise, or the good, familiar, everyday boredom:
unlike the first three terms, acedia is a high grade philosophical and existential boredom that is
combined with despair. And apart from just using it as a motif, Wallace proposes a way to deal with
it – by paying attention. It is by paying

The Deadly Sins Of Christianity Is Sloth Or Laziness...
One of the deadly sins in Christianity is sloth; which essentially can be translated to acedia. Acedia
can be seen as sloth or laziness making it a sin. While sloth is just one of the definitions of acedia,
there can be several interpretations of the term. For instance, of the definitions of Acedia according
to Charles Nault is the ability of making nonsense out of life's actions. However, I believe we lose
meaning in our actions because we over think our actions. Defining acedia aids in the process of
interrogating the modern agencies that affect the world. For instance, individualism, instrumental
reasoning and loses in religious faith that all be traced back to acedia. Acedia can be considered a
stepping–stone for numerous modern agencies, in order to render their effects; their relationship to
acedia needs to be thoroughly examined. Acedia is a broad term and can have numerous definitions.
One of the ways Charles Nault defines acedia is by looking at it as loss of meaning. Nault considers
that as out moral life passes we used to make "sense" out of it. However, acedia has led to us not
caring about making sense of our actions. In other words, Nault believes that Acedia has made us so
detached that we make "nonsense" of our life actions. While Nault interprets acedia as our ability to
make nonsense out of our actions and have no meaning behind them, I believe that Acedia is making
too much sense and thinking too much into each of our actions. As we are evolving our

The Manifestation of Pride in The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis
The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis suggests that choices made on earth have a consequential effect
towards our acceptance into heaven or our plummet into hell. In this book pride manifests itself in a
hundred subtle ways as souls whine about perceived injustices or irrational motives. Thankfully, a
few tourists do humble themselves, become transformed into marvelously real beings, and remain in
heaven. But most don't, about which the great Scottish author George MacDonald, Lewis' heavenly
guide, says, "They may not be rejecting the truth of heaven now. They may be reenacting the
rejection they made while on earth". George MacDonald the narrator/teacher, from whom Lewis ...

Adoption has brought me through the hands of my birth mother to a mother who has now raised me
for 16 years. Conversations with my birth mother result in dramatic feelings for her and for me,
"tyranny of the past" (p.102). But, Lewis suggests in the book that the past is all she (the ghost)
"chose to have" and that "it was the wrong way to deal with sorrow". My birth mother could very
well be the ghost as I was even an 'accident'. As her memory of me is deceiving and still consuming
her thoughts. This maternal or instinctual love is preventing my mother from moving on in her own
life.
A material mind set is a reality of many entrepreneurs and is well represented in this book through
the man with the bowler hat, Ikey. This mans thoughts revolve around providing necessity, "But if I
can come back with some real commodities...why, at once you'd get a demand down in our town"
(p.13). For a real world entrepreneur, such as Ikey, it would be simple for thoughts to be consumed
by opportunism. If thoughts are consumed by need, it leaves less time to reflect on choices and can
cause Acedia (restlessness or despair). Lewis makes this point later in chapter six while referring to
Ikey, "...still availing himself of every scrap of cover, he set out on his Via dolorosa to the bus,
carrying his torture" (p.49). Ikey's refusal to rest denies him an opportunity, which any entrepreneur
would never give up, but in this instance his

Misogynistic and Sexist Undertones in "One Flew Over the...
From the moment that the apple touched Eve's lips, women have been seen as an embodiment of all
that is evil. This reflects misogynistic societal beliefs that women are below men. While many of the
prejudices towards women are hidden in modern American society, some misogynistic stereotypes
are still present. In Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, one can see many misogynistic
and sexist undertones. Big Nurse Ratched is in a position of authority over a large group of men and
is seen as a tyrannical and unjust ruler. Although most of her methods would have been seen as
awful when used by any person, the saturation of bad women in the novel creates an unfavorable
picture of women in general. The balance of power in the ward is ... Show more content on

Therefore, she "attempts to conceal [her breasts] in [a] sexless get–up" (64). In order for McMurphy
and the men to regain power, they must regain their sexuality and reveal the nurse's. McMurphy's
final stand against the nurse involves him "ripp[ing] her uniform all the way down the front" (275)
and revealing breasts that she had concealed. With this metaphorical rape, Kesey is equating the
men regaining power with sexual dominance over women. The rape of the nurse is seen as a heroic
act by McMurphy, which conveys the misogynistic message that men have a right to sexual power
over women. The way that McMurphy performs this rape is effectively silencing the nurse, as he
had his "heavy red fingers [in] the white flesh of her throat" (275). Using silence in conjunction with
a metaphorical rape gives a further misogynistic tone, as McMurphy is exerting sexual dominance
as well as stopping her from being able to speak out against him, or any man. Because this is
McMurphy's final action, it is seen as his greatest one. Therefore, the man who can break a woman
is seen as an ideal specimen.
Size, both physical and metaphorical, plays a large role in the misogynistic references in the ward.
The Chief makes constant references to people's size. However, size is relative. One cannot be big
without someone else being small. When the nurse is in full control, the Chief sees her as "big as a
tractor" (5). With her great size, Nurse Ratched is squashing the

Sloth In Henry Fairlie's The Seven Deadly Sins Today
"Change the channels for an hour or two"
Sloth (or Acedia), one of the 7 deadly sins in the Christian tradition, can be generally defined as
physically and emotionally shirking one's duties. Henry Fairlie, in "The Seven Deadly Sins Today",
says that Sloth is "a state of dejection" that gives rise to "sluggishness...a poisoning of the will"
(Fairlie 113). It is this very state that Green Day describes so aptly in their debut single "Longview".
Longview describes the life of the slothful person. In the first few lines the slothful person admits to
himself, "I'm fucking lazy" (Armstrong). This general attitude pervades the entire song and the
worst part of the slothful person in "Longview" is that he understands this is a dejected state of his
own making. He is in "a house with unlocked doors" but knows that he has essentially "locked the
door to my own cell" (Armstrong). This is consistent with Fairlie's understanding of the Christian
sin. In the same way the slothful person in the song locks himself away, so does sloth ... Show more

Failing to love a good according to its proper measures and failing to carry out corresponding
obligations (sloth) can lead a person, as it does in the song, to seek another distraction, one that
perhaps does not require anything of them. Instead of looking for a job, as his mother requests, the
slothful person in "Longview" smokes, gets high, and masturbates. Getting high (in my experience
at least) tends to contribute to a state of slothfulness and encourages the shirking of one's
obligations. The masturbation part however, seems to fall under another deadly sin, the sin of lust.
Seeking sexual pleasures in the wrong sort of way and improperly loving persons as the man in
"Longview" is doing appears to be a symptom of lust. In this way "Longview" shows the relation
between sloth and lust and how easily one can lead to

Melancholy In Ancient Greece
2 MELANCHOLY
Some of the first accounts of what we today call melancholy come from Ancient Greece.
Melancholy derives from two Greek words, melas (black) and /{hole (bile) (Radden 2000: ix).
Various writings of melancholy discuss the physical and emotional aspects of a person affected by
melancholy. Likewise, music was believed to "alter the mind and influence moods" already by the
people of ancient cultures (Garrido 2017: 68). In 400 BC, Hippocrates believed that depression and
constant anxiety are signs of melancholy. Hippocrates also connected psychic disturbances to
certain seasonal changes, and he noted that melancholy was mainly experienced during spring and
autumn. (Bowring 2008: 18, 74). Aligning with Hippocrates two centuries later, ... Show more

Melancholy was seen as a "morally dangerous state" especially dangerous leaving especially women
vulnerable to it due to women's moral and intellectual inadequacies. (Radden 2009: 6) The sense of
dejection and withdrawal of interest that had characterized melancholy become affected by the
medieval Christian worldview. (Flatley 2008: 35) Consequently, not only women were thought to be
endangered as terms such as acedia and tristitia rose to describe reflections of melancholy. These
terms were seen as moral failings, spiritual illnesses, or even sins, especially preying on monks.
(Radden 2009: 6 & Bowring 2008: 92) Originally the use of acedia overlapped with tristitia,
although their divergent connotations. Tristitia (in Latin sadness) fittingly represented sorrow and
held more positive connotations, whereas acedia echoed negativity as it was connected to sorrow,
dejection, despair, indolence and idleness. (Bowring 2008: 93, 107) Like melancholy, music felt the
impact of the medieval period that caused the development of ancient Greek ideas concerning music

Abstract
The aim of this research is to observe the use of signs in each character in cartoon "Spongebob
SquarePants". The research is focused on analyzing traits and behaviors of each character in this
cartoon which represented signs. This paper describes meanings behind characters in cartoon
"Spongebob SquarePants". In this cartoon, there are seven main characters which have special traits.
The behaviors and traits are a sign which represent something hidden. This research was made
based on two research question which are representation of seven deadly sins in every character in

In cartoon "Spongebob SquarePants", there are seven main characters. SpongeBob SquarePants is
an energetic and optimistic sea sponge (although his appearance more closely resembles a kitchen
sponge) who lives in a pineapple under the sea with his pet snail, Gary, who meows like a cat.
Living two houses down from SpongeBob is his best friend, Patrick Star, a dim–witted yet friendly
pink sea star who lives under a rock. Even despite his "Mental Setbacks", Patrick still sees himself
as intelligent. SpongeBob's next–door neighbor and co–worker is Squid ward Tentacles, an arrogant
and ill–tempered squid who lives in an Easter Island moai and dislikes his neighbors (especially
SpongeBob) for their child–like behavior. He enjoys playing the clarinet and painting self–portraits,
but hates his job working at the Krusty Krab.
Another close friend of SpongeBob's is Sandy Cheeks, a squirrel from Texas. Sandy is an expert at
karate and lives in an underwater tree dome. When not inside her tree dome, she wears an astronaut–
like suit because she cannot breathe underwater. SpongeBob and Squidward's employer is former
officer cadet for the Bikini Bottom Navy force and war veteran Eugene Krabs, a miserly crab
obsessed with money, who is the owner of the Krusty Krab restaurant. Mr. Krabs' archenemy is

INTRODUCTION The Catechism of the Catholic Church emphasized the issue of seven capital sins
knowing fully well that it is a cankerworm to spirituality. Thus, Bishop Fulton Sheen calls them "the
seven pall–bearers of the soul" and gives them the following names: self–love, inordinate love of
money, illicit sex, hate, jealousy, over–indulgence and laziness.(FULTON SHEEN, The Seven
Capital Sins) Thomas Aquinas called them "vainglories" in his Summa Theologica (1–11, 84:4)
Pride is a spiritual cancer that eats and consumes the vital life. Covetousness is like spiritual
consumption or tuberculosis, wasting away the soul's inner powers. Lust is a spiritual leprosy. Anger
is a delirious fever. Envy is spiritual blood–poisoning. Gluttony ... Show more content on

The evil of lust is reducible to this: that sexual satisfaction is sought for either outside marriage or,
at any rate, in a manner which is contrary to the laws that govern marital intercourse. Indulging in
lust is a mortal sin, provided of course, it is done in a way that is voluntary in itself and fully
deliberate. This is the testimony of St. Paul in the letter to the Galatians, 5:19: "Now the works of
the flesh are manifest, which are fornication, uncleanness, immodesty, luxury... Of the which I
foretell you, as I have foretold to you, that they who do such things shall not obtain the kingdom of
God." GLUTTONY: Overindulgence in food or drink. Gluttony is one of the seven capital sins
(1866). The moral deformity discernible in this vice lies in its defiance of the order postulated by
reason, which prescribes necessity as the measure of indulgence in eating and drinking. A glutton
wants things according to the apt rendering of Father Joseph Rickably: too soon, too expensively,
too much, too eagerly, too daintily. Someone habitually gluttonous is so wedded to the pleasures of
the table as to live merely to eat and drink, so minded as to be of the number of those, described by
the Apostle St. Paul, "whose god is their belly" (Phil 3:19). SLOTH: A culpable lack of physical or
spiritual effort; acedia or laziness. This is the notion commonly obtaining, and in this sense sloth is
not a specific

Sin in Nathaniel Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown Essay
Puritan doctrine taught that all men are totally depraved. And the young Puritan Goodman Brown
accepted this principle, after his in–the–woods experience, as applying not only to the Salem village
rank–and–file but even to his faultless wife Faith. Is this notion of sin correct? This essay seeks to
compare this moral depravity doctrine of the Puritans as seen in "Young Goodman Brown" to the
Catholic Church's teaching on sin, a recognized standard.
The influence of Puritan religion, culture and education is a common topic in Nathaniel Hawthorne's
works. Growing up, Hawthorne could not escape the influence of Puritan society, not only from
residing with his father's devout Puritan family as a child but also due to Hawthorne's study ... Show

The supposed conversion experience he has at this liturgy easily translates into the dream allegory
of Hawthorne's work and allows the author to use Puritan doctrine and the history of Salem to argue
the merits and consequences of the belief in man's total depravity. Such a belief is too harsh to be in
accordance with Scripture, I think the Catholic Church would say. Consider how the CCC
(Catechism of the Catholic Church) includes God's Mercy with its treatment of sin(pt3,s1,ch1,art8):
1848 As St. Paul affirms, "Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more."118 But to do its work
grace must uncover sin so as to convert our hearts and bestow on us "righteousness to eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Lord."119 Like a physician who
probes the wound before treating it, God, by his Word and by his Spirit, casts a living light on sin. . .
.
As Benjamin Franklin V states in "Goodman Brown and the Puritan Catechism," Hawthorne used
John Cotton's Milk for Babes as the education source of Goodman Brown. It was the Puritan belief
that man must be instructed to realize his own depravity, and therefore at childhood the education
began. The child was taught that he was"conceived in sin, and born in iniquity" (70). This was a
very harsh doctrine, with lifelong affects on the minds of Puritan believers. Let us visit the

The Representation of Marriage in The Old World Landowners...
In their short stories, both Gogol and Dostoyevsky give the reader a snapshot into the life of two
different couples and in doing so, present marriage in a way that is perhaps peculiar and unflattering
to a modern reader. To a contemporary reader, however, these short stories would have been much
more relevant, as along with a large amount of other Russian literature at the time, these two short
stories are taken from real–life experience, and therefore, anyone can relate to the characters; for
example, Dostoyevsky's 'A Gentle Creature' was based on a local news item that many reading the
short story at the time would have been aware of. Neither marriage is presented as a simplistic one
and as two short stories written by Russian ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Similarly, Pulkheria's death is unexpected as she is not of ill health, even telling her husband "No, I
am not ill, Afanasy Ivanovich! ... I know I shall die this summer"; while Pulkheria appears to
believe that the return of her cat was a death omen, it is also suggested that she simply does not
want to live anymore. The deaths further differ in that while Pulkeria cared for her husband and
made sure that everything was planned for after her passing, ensuring her husband's wellbeing, the
young wife in "A Gentle Creature" simply seized her chance to commit suicide as soon as her
husband left the room, leaving him in complete shock and grief. The husband, however, completely
misses the point of the young girl jumping out of the window with a religious icon in her hands; he
claims that death is up to chance and says "If I'd only got back five minutes, five minutes sooner!"
(Dostoevsky, 1995:99) whereas the girl was attempting to find a way to be redeemed in the eyes of
god: she is asking for forgiveness.
Both marriages are also represented as fairly abnormal and strained. The most obvious abnormality
in Afanasy and Pulkeria's marriage is their patronymic surname, suggesting that the couple are
somehow related. This is further supported by the fact Pulkheria often treats Afanasy as a child and
even refers to him as one, with Grayson

The 7 Deadly Sins and 7 Cardinal Virtues
========================================
Overview
––––––––
The "Seven Deadly Sins"', also known as the "Capital Vices" or "Cardinal Sins", are a classification
of vices that were originally used in early Christian teachings to educate and instruct followers
concerning (immoral) fallen man's tendency to sin. The Roman Catholic Church divided sin into
two principal categories: "venial", which are relatively minor, and could be forgiven through any
sacrament of the Church, and the more severe "capital" or "mortal" sins, which, when committed,
destroyed the life of grace, and created the threat of eternal damnation unless either absolved
through the sacrament of confession, or otherwise forgiven ... Show more content on

Substance abuse or binge drinking can be seen as examples of gluttony therefore. The penitents in
the Purgatorio were forced to stand between two trees, unable to reach or eat the fruit hanging from
either, and were thus described as having a starved appearance.
==> Greed (Latin: avaritia)
Synonyms: Greed (treachery, covetousness)
Greed is, like Lust and Gluttony, a sin of excess. However, Greed (as seen by the Church) applied to
the acquisition of wealth in particular. Thomas Aquinas wrote that Greed was "a sin against God,
just as all mortal sins, in as much as man condemns things eternal for the sake of temporal things."
In Dante's Purgatory, the penitents were bound and laid face down on the ground for having
concentrated too much on earthly thoughts. "Avarice" is more of a blanket term that can describe
many other examples of sinful behavior. These include disloyalty, deliberate betrayal, or treason,
especially for personal gain, for example through bribery. Scavenging and hoarding of materials or
objects, theft and robbery, especially by means of violence, trickery, or manipulation of authority are
all actions that may be inspired by greed. Such misdeeds can include Simony, where one profits
from soliciting goods within the actual confines of a church.
==> Sloth (Latin: acedia)
Synonyms: Sloth (laziness, sadness, apathy)
More than other sins, the definition of Sloth has changed considerably since its original inclusion
among The Seven Deadly Sins. It

Analysis Of Keller 's ' The Gospel And Work '
After Keller introduces and explains God's original plan for work and what work has become after
the fall of man, Keller comes to the final part of his writing: the Gospel and work. Keller explains
that man always attaches a story line to their life. He relates the idea of a story to narratives, which
becomes "a fundamental story about what human life in the world should be like, what has knocked
it off balance, and what can be done to make it right." (154) This narrative is important because
everyone lives out a narrative. In addition, everyone acknowledges that there is something wrong
within us and among us. Thus our worldview attempts to address these problems and identify what
is the cause and what is the solution. Keller explains the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Christianity affects not only those areas of work, but all areas of work.
While there is a new story for work, there is also a new conception of work. Keller explains that the
reason why work done by Christians does not seem different from the work done by non–Christians
is that work's purpose is to serve our neighbor in the best possible way. Anyone could do this, thus it
appears no different. Keller warns that Christians can be led to undervalue good work done by
nonbelievers. What Christians must do is to "place a high value on all human work, done by all
people, as a channel of God's love for his world." (182 Keller further explains that when
acknowledging this information, this leads to the Christian theological idea of 'common grace.'
Understanding common grace is important because without it, Christians will not be able to
understand why non–Christians exceed them in many aspects. Through doctrine of sin, "believers
are never as good as our true worldview should make us' and the doctrine of grace shows that
"unbelievers are never as messed up as their false worldview should make them" (188) Keller
concludes the chapter with a problem currently plaguing Christians: disengagement with popular
culture. There are three forms: complete renunciation, creation of an alternate Christian subculture,
and uncritical consumption of popular culture without worldview discernment. There are two
causes: a thin or legalistic

After Henry declared his supremacy, the Christian church separated, forming the Church of
England. Henry installed the Acts of Succession and the first Act of Supremacy, declaring the king
was "the only Supreme Head in Earth of the Church of England." (Dutton, Marchand, and Harkness

Rome's. Henry VIII by William Shakespeare shows a neutral bias towards the king. The play
presents the events during King Henry VIII to be predetermined. The fallen characters prevented the
birth of Queen Elizabeth and therefore it can be understood that their decline in station was an

How Did Odysseus Escape The Cyclops?
The Greek had a set of rules that human beings had to live by. These are called the 8 Greek evil
thoughts (Gastrimargia, Porneia, Philargyria, Hyperephania, Lype, Orge, Kenodoxia, Acedia). In
"The Cyclops" episode, Odysseus enters the cave of a cyclops and gets trapped. After being locked
in this cave with his men being brutally killed and eaten, Odysseus and four others come up with a
plan to escape that will work. While trying to figure out a means of escape, Odysseus falls prey to
three of the eight Greek evil thoughts. The three he falls prey to are hyperephania (pride), orge
(anger), kenodoxia (boasting). Pride can make a person become narcissistic meaning that they
expect esteem or adultion when they have not earned it. Odysseus reveals this when he says,"I drew

Aristotle 's View On Human Nature Essay
This quote by Aristotle was taken from 'Aristotle: a Very Short Introduction' and there is no–one of
whom this is more true than Aristotle as he was dedicated to every possible discipline he could sink
his teeth into making him one of the utmost key figures within philosophy, not only in classical
philosophy but he is still regarded as influential in modern philosophy.
As well as being a devoted biologist, botanist, moral philosopher, psychologist, zoologist and many
more things besides Aristotle held a view about human nature that he interwove into his concept of
virtue theory, this is described at some length in the text Nicomachean Ethics. It is this view on
human nature that I intend to explain and discuss throughout this essay with reference to some more
recent philosophers to show that Aristotle's view was not only linked directly to Athenian society
but has managed to stand the test of time. A point I will return to later in a yet to posted article 'Can
we Consider Modern Ethics to be Aristotelian or Nietzschean?', this article is much better written
and argues the points in greater detail. I must admit this was in fact a very early work of mine and
although some editing has been made it still lacks the strength some of my later pieces possess.
From quite early on in the text Aristotle starts to interweave his views on human nature[2]. He
makes the claim that by nature man is blind to morality suggesting that man is naturally an amoral
creature, this is backed up by

"Maybe it's just us. . ." He murmured.
It had not been the island that had spoiled the boys. It had not been the storm, or even the war that
they had been fleeing. Ralph seemed to be able to comprehend it now. Mankind, when all else was

Is Sloth Not A Common Problem?
In this modern day, most people would look at the word, sloth, and immediately define it as
laziness; but it takes our own willfulness to act as such. We might not see it that way, but sloth is not
just doing nothing– or being lazy, no, sloth can and does happen when one is too busy doing a great
many other tasks other that what we need to do– distraction a common problem in today's society.
We are too busy to focus on what matters because "our hectic lives are examples of the narcotic
effect of acedia among us, the "spiritual morphine" that Norris wrote about. All this activity is a way
of coping with pain" (Senkbeil, 2014). Sloth itself is a sort of neglect, it keeps one from their
priorities, disguising itself as the great many other commitments that must be completed on a daily,
weekly and monthly basis. Keeping busy, because they would otherwise be perceived as lazy or
slothful is not the answer; "We are constantly busy; we can't possibly be accused of being slothful or
lazy" (Senkbeil)! But note that according to McMartin, "both laziness and workaholism can be
potential symptoms of the deeper spiritual vice of acedia" (2013) but not sloth itself. "We miss
opportunities because of wrong investment. This leads to emptiness (in our life, mind, and soul).
Then it leads to consequence, which leads to excuses. We make excuses and give in to circumstance,
which empowers our situation and disempowers us" (Gilligan, 2016)! Instead there must be a
diligent effort to

The Love Song Of J. Alfred Prufrock
Imagine going out to a bar alone for a few drinks. Now imagine an attractive person sitting across
from you. What do you do? Do you get up to talk to that person or continue drinking in solitary?
Now consider the time spent dawdling away thinking of what you can be doing. Although most
people may not realize how much time they put into actually thinking about their choices, it happens
much too often. While most of our minds are busy thinking of what we can be doing, we neglect to
consider that our repetitive, physical idleness during our indecisive thoughts are examples of great
boredom. These ideas of boredom can be represented in T.S. Eliot's poem "The Love Song of J.
Alfred Prufrock" where Prufrock experiences different types of boredom ... Show more content on

He says "To lead you to an overwhelming question ... Oh. do not ask. 'What is it?' Let us go and
make our visit (10–12)." Prufrock wants to act on his actions, but wonders what will happen and if
his experience is worth the time after all? Or does he fear that whomever he is with questions the
purpose of their interaction as well? Either way, he is overwhelmed with the thought of whether or
not he should make a move. Thus leaving his ponderous thoughts meaningless. There is only time
passing due to his fear of moving forward. According to Lars Svendsen in "The Philosophy of
Boredom", when we are bored, we tend to find meaning in what we are doing so that it is not
boring. Prufrock seems to ignore the purpose of his lack of actions and social interaction, but dwells
in his present thoughts. On the same note, Prufrock's fear of making a decision is also another sign
of boredom in which he lacks the ability to measure the quality of his actions. He says, "And time
yet for a hundred indecisions, and for a hundred visions and revisions, before the taking of the toast
and tea" Prufrock is unable to make a decision, he is saying there is time to decide and not decide.
Although in his case, he fails to act on his wishful thoughts of socializing with a woman. In a way,
he is justifying his idleness by contemplating that there will be more time to act. According to
Svendsen, he refers to how we distinguish the quality of our actions and how at times we

Analysis Of The Deadliest Of Sins By Robertson Davies
In The Deadliest Of Sins Robertson Davies, the seven deadly sins are briefly talked about but his
main focus is directed towards the sin, Sloth. He talks about the sins in a speech to fellow Queen's
University graduates and is explaining to them what sloth, or as he refers to it throughout the
speech, Acedia, does to the mind and why it was considered a sin. I will summarize Davies points as
well as add in my own opinion to the subject. In the beginning of Davies speech he explains that he
is an author and how being an author is more of a state of mind rather than a job. He goes on to say
that he will be quitting his job as an author and pursue a new job. Failure is something that Davies
believes will come with finding a new career but he tells the university students that failure is
something that is easy to live through and that the only failure that breaks the spirit and that failure
is the failure in life itself. The thing about that type of failure is that it does not just come suddenly,
it creeps up on you and grabs a hold on you with you knowing. Davies begins to talk to about how
this failure is considered one of the seven deadly sins and this one in ... Show more content on

It is not the same meaning as how Sloth is known now which is to be physically lazy or sluggish.
Davies goes onto explain how to recognize Acedia in people. He explains that Anatole France said
that we mistake growing older as becoming more wise when in reality growing old doesn't mean we
are gaining more wisdom. It simply means that we learn how to avoid things that hurt us and we
teach ourselves that we need to avoid anything that causes pain. Davies says that if we can't feel
pain in life then surely we can't feel joy either, therefore letting Acedia take over. That is why it was
considered a sin, because it didn't brighten the mind but more so dimmed it which eventually just
kills

Good And Evil In The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And Mr Hyde
1. Introduction The novella "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" by Robert Louise
Stevenson, first published in 1886, is about the dichotomy of Good and Evil in humans. In this story
Stevenson shows the natural curiosity of a scientist who uses himself as a test object in order to
perform a self–experiment. The reader learns about the transgression of ethical limits in science. In
my research paper I am going to analyze "Good versus Evil" in the novel. The reason why I decided
to write about this book is because the concept of "Good" and "Evil", which coexists in all of us,
forms the central subject. Stevenson's talent to captivate the reader with his unique writing ability is
the reason why the novel is so well known and is considered a classic. From time immemorial the
question of what, or who, can be considered good or evil arises. Stevenson's novel shows the
characteristics of the respective elements by Dr. Jekyll's transformation into his evil twin Mr. Hyde
and back. It is a fundamental behavior of human beings to clarify the battle between good and evil.
The definition of these terms is scientifically analyzed and documented multiple times. ... Show

Jekyll imagines that the human soul is a battleground with an angel, and a fiend each struggling for
mastery but one will always dominate. The inner conflict begins with Dr. Jekyll's experiment to
divide evil and virtue, the two provinces [...] that compound man's dual nature . Dr. Jekyll claims
that one day "man will be ultimately known for a mere polity of multifarious, incongruous and
independent denizens" . He hoped to separate and purify each element, however, he succeeded in
bringing only the evil side into being. Although there were now two physical identities, one was
purely evil; the other was still the old Henry Jekyll. He refers to Mr. Hyde using the pronoun "He",
and applies it when he talks about himself. The body becomes the signifier of evil or

Philosophy In Seven Sentences By Douglas Groothuis
Philosophy in Seven Sentences written by Douglas Groothuis is a selective evaluation of seven
philosophers and the consequences of their philosophies. It addresses both accuracies and flaws in
these philosophers' theories and, in part, what it means to philosophize. It gives a concise and
accurate explanation of the seven philosophies and strong justification for the agreement or
dismissal of these views.
Book Summary
Protagoras' core teachings were, "Man is the measure of all things." and, brought to its logical
conclusion, "error is impossible". Groothuis evaluates it as the concept that all things in the natural
and so forth are measured by each individual, and are fully justified based upon how they feel.
Groothuis emphasizes that this philosophy is built upon the foundation that perception is reality. He
advises the readers to reject this philosophy because, "Statements cannot be true unless it ... Show

Through his "Phenomenology" he concludes that "All our vices are virtues found in God".
Augustine uses this to present the argument that "Humans possess knowledge of... moral law... and
their inability to obey it" producing "guilt over sin". "God is the best explanation for the awareness"
and by sending a mediator, Christ, enables "our hearts [to] find rest in the grace offered by God
alone".
Descartes philosophy is expressed by Groothuis as being taken greatly out of context by the
majority. The text describes Descartes as being an "earnest and humble seeker of truth" and it was
this seeking of truth that caused Descartes to "test all that can be doubted" by doubting even his
existence. This leads him to the realization that if there is a doubt there must be a doubter to suggest
the questioning. This ultimately produced the philosophy, "I think, therefore I

Melancholia In Orestes Research Paper
Ancient Greece, depression was referred to as melancholia. Melancholia was portrayed in Orestes,
______. In a vase from 400 BC, Orestes is drawn having a ceremony to get rid of vengeful spirits
that would not leave him alone since his mother was killed. In the book Orestes by Euripides,
Orestes is depicted as a helpless, exhausted and motivationless person who barely ever wanted to eat
but was constantly crying and sleeping. Jason the Argonaut is another Greek work that has to do
with melancholia. Jason is described as a hero who is always in action trying to resolve problems.
However, he becomes a helpless and bad–tempered person when his ship is wrecked on the coast of
Libya. In the 4th century BC however, melancholia began to be viewed as an illness in Greek
scientific work. For example, the physician Hippocrates wrote that melancholia was a depressive
temperament that resulted when bodily "humors" or fluids were not balanced. According to
Hippocrates, the body was composed of blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm. When someone
became ill, it was thought that there was an excess amount of a substances. At the time, Hippocrates,
as well as other Greek physicians, believed that having an excess amount of cold black bile in
someone's body ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Noblemen, as well as other individuals, began to share their ideas more and would also describe
themselves with somewhat of a melancholic temperament in order to feel empowered. For example,
in the 15th century, Robert Burton wrote The Anatomy of Melancholy in which he analyzed the
history, causes and treatments of melancholia, while also making sure it was seen as a blessing.
Soon, melancholia was viewed as a fashionable trend in the culture. Plays, such as Shakespeare's
Hamlet, were now including characters that matched the description of a depressed

Symbolism In The Mermaid Chair, By Sue Monk Kidd
Abstract 'Island' is an emblem of both remoteness and nirvana in both East and West. In the East, to
the Buddha, island is a positive symbol of revitalization in the core of the ocean of Samsara. In
Commonwealth feminist writers such as Anita Desai and Sue Monk Kidd, the island becomes a
metaphor for a woman's quest for freedom and identity. The Mermaid Chair is a vividly imagined
novel about the spirit and the ecstasies of the body; one that illuminates a woman's self–awakening
with the brilliant and power that only a writer of Kidd's ability could conjure. An island is a land
mass that is often smaller than a continent. An island is normally surrounded by water completely.
Egret island is a thin place, in the Celtic sense of the phrase, a place where the visible reality of
everyday life and the invisible reality of the sacred interest, where mighty forces work mysteriously
to bring about transformation. The main conflict in The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd is the
mental and physical illness of Jessie Sullivan's– the main character, one of those unambiguous
women with no desire to disturb the universe. Jessie stands at the bow of a ferry, looking across
Bull's Bay towards Egret island , a tiny barrier island off the coast of South Carolina ... Show more

Anger In Dante's The Grapes Of Wrath
Wrath, being vindictive with malice & forethought.
Anger is an emotion related to one's psychological interpretation of having been offended, wronged,
or denied and a tendency to react through retaliation. Anger is a normal emotion that involves a
strong uncomfortable and emotional response to a perceived provocation as displays of anger can
also be used as a manipulation strategy for social influence.
While many philosophers and writers have warned against the spontaneous and uncontrolled fits of
anger, there has been disagreement over the intrinsic value of anger.
Greed,
Greed (Latin, avaritia), also known as avarice or covetousness, is, like lust and gluttony, a sin of
excess. However, greed (as seen by the church) is applied to a very excessive or rapacious desire
and pursuit of material possessions. Thomas Aquinas wrote, "Greed is a sin against God, just as all
mortal sins, in as much as man condemns things eternal for the sake of temporal things." In Dante's
Purgatory, the penitents were bound and laid face down on the ... Show more content on

It is identified as a desire to be more important or attractive than others, failing to acknowledge the
good work of others, and excessive love of self (especially holding self out of proper position
toward God). Dante's definition was "love of self perverted to hatred and contempt for one's
neighbour." In Jacob Bidermann's medieval miracle play, Cenodoxus, pride is the deadliest of all the
sins and leads directly to the damnation of the titulary famed Parisian doctor. In perhaps the best–
known example, the story of Lucifer, pride (his desire to compete with God) was what caused his
fall from Heaven, and his resultant transformation into Satan. In Dante's Divine Comedy, the
penitents were forced to walk with stone slabs bearing down on their backs to induce feelings of

Peoria Analysis

  • 1. Peoria Analysis The choice of Peoria, IL – an IRS office in the Midwest to set the novel is anything but coincidental. Apart from being one of the very few rather unpopular American institutions, it is also, largely, extremely efficient, which is aptly summarized by the sardonic but true observation often ascribed to Benjamin Franklin (who used it in the current form in a letter to Jean–Baptiste Leroy in 1789 but dating back to Daniel Defoe's Political History of the Devil written in 1726), that "in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes". But the inevitability of tax burden placed on an average citizen is not the only thing that is characteristic of the U.S. Inland Revenue: dealing with millions of tax returns and myriads of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The latter expression is a direct quote from 1 Corinthians 13:11, clearly implying something akin to a quasi–religious "awakening" whereby a self–professed slacker and 'wastoid', ironically through his inability to pay attention, evolves into a full–on accountant. At this point, in order to further explore the theme of boredom in The Pale King, let us revisit the definition of boredom itself – after all, to say that the novel is simply a book about boredom would be a serious understatement. The Pale King is not just about the psychological side of this phenomenon, it actually reaches much deeper – the religious references described above clearly point to acedia, a concept associated with monastic hermits. • 2. The Deadly Sins Of Christianity Is Sloth Or Laziness... One of the deadly sins in Christianity is sloth; which essentially can be translated to acedia. Acedia can be seen as sloth or laziness making it a sin. While sloth is just one of the definitions of acedia, there can be several interpretations of the term. For instance, of the definitions of Acedia according to Charles Nault is the ability of making nonsense out of life's actions. However, I believe we lose meaning in our actions because we over think our actions. Defining acedia aids in the process of interrogating the modern agencies that affect the world. For instance, individualism, instrumental reasoning and loses in religious faith that all be traced back to acedia. Acedia can be considered a stepping–stone for numerous modern agencies, in order to render their effects; their relationship to acedia needs to be thoroughly examined. Acedia is a broad term and can have numerous definitions. One of the ways Charles Nault defines acedia is by looking at it as loss of meaning. Nault considers that as out moral life passes we used to make "sense" out of it. However, acedia has led to us not caring about making sense of our actions. In other words, Nault believes that Acedia has made us so detached that we make "nonsense" of our life actions. While Nault interprets acedia as our ability to make nonsense out of our actions and have no meaning behind them, I believe that Acedia is making too much sense and thinking too much into each of our actions. Lewis suggests that choices made on earth have a consequential effect towards our acceptance into heaven or our plummet into hell. In this book pride manifests itself in a hundred subtle ways as souls whine about perceived injustices or irrational motives. Thankfully, a few tourists do humble themselves, become transformed into marvelously real beings, and remain in heaven. But, Lewis suggests in the book that the past is all she (the ghost) "chose to have" and that "it was the wrong way to deal with sorrow". My birth mother could very well be the ghost as I was even an 'accident'. As her memory of me is deceiving and still consuming her thoughts. This maternal or instinctual love is preventing my mother from moving on in her own life. A material mind set is a reality of many entrepreneurs and is well represented in this book through the man with the bowler hat, Ikey. This mans thoughts revolve around providing necessity, "But if I can come back with some real commodities...why, at once you'd get a demand down in our town" (p.13). For a real world entrepreneur, such as Ikey, it would be simple for thoughts to be consumed by opportunism. If thoughts are consumed by need, it leaves less time to reflect on choices and can cause Acedia (restlessness or despair). Lewis makes this point later in chapter six while referring to Ikey, "...still availing himself of every scrap of cover, he set out on his Via dolorosa to the bus, carrying his torture" (p.49). This reflects misogynistic societal beliefs that women are below men. While many of the prejudices towards women are hidden in modern American society, some misogynistic stereotypes are still present. In Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, one can see many misogynistic and sexist undertones. Big Nurse Ratched is in a position of authority over a large group of men and is seen as a tyrannical and unjust ruler. McMurphy's final stand against the nurse involves him "ripp[ing] her uniform all the way down the front" (275) and revealing breasts that she had concealed. With this metaphorical rape, Kesey is equating the men regaining power with sexual dominance over women. The rape of the nurse is seen as a heroic act by McMurphy, which conveys the misogynistic message that men have a right to sexual power over women. The way that McMurphy performs this rape is effectively silencing the nurse, as he had his "heavy red fingers [in] the white flesh of her throat" (275). Using silence in conjunction with a metaphorical rape gives a further misogynistic tone, as McMurphy is exerting sexual dominance as well as stopping her from being able to speak out against him, or any man. Because this is McMurphy's final action, it is seen as his greatest one. Therefore, the man who can break a woman is seen as an ideal specimen. Size, both physical and metaphorical, plays a large role in the misogynistic references in the ward. The Chief makes constant references to people's size. However, size is relative. Sloth In Henry Fairlie's The Seven Deadly Sins Today "Change the channels for an hour or two" Sloth (or Acedia), one of the 7 deadly sins in the Christian tradition, can be generally defined as physically and emotionally shirking one's duties. Henry Fairlie, in "The Seven Deadly Sins Today", says that Sloth is "a state of dejection" that gives rise to "sluggishness...a poisoning of the will" (Fairlie 113). It is this very state that Green Day describes so aptly in their debut single "Longview". Longview describes the life of the slothful person. In the first few lines the slothful person admits to himself, "I'm fucking lazy" (Armstrong). This general attitude pervades the entire song and the worst part of the slothful person in "Longview" is that he understands this is a dejected state of his own making. He is in "a house with unlocked doors" but knows that he has essentially "locked the door to my own cell" (Armstrong). This is consistent with Fairlie's understanding of the Christian sin. Getting high (in my experience at least) tends to contribute to a state of slothfulness and encourages the shirking of one's obligations. The masturbation part however, seems to fall under another deadly sin, the sin of lust. Melancholy derives from two Greek words, melas (black) and /{hole (bile) (Radden 2000: ix). Various writings of melancholy discuss the physical and emotional aspects of a person affected by melancholy. Likewise, music was believed to "alter the mind and influence moods" already by the people of ancient cultures (Garrido 2017: 68). In 400 BC, Hippocrates believed that depression and constant anxiety are signs of melancholy. Thus, Bishop Fulton Sheen calls them "the seven pall–bearers of the soul" and gives them the following names: self–love, inordinate love of money, illicit sex, hate, jealousy, over–indulgence and laziness.(FULTON SHEEN, The Seven Capital Sins) Thomas Aquinas called them "vainglories" in his Summa Theologica (1–11, 84:4) Pride is a spiritual cancer that eats and consumes the vital life. Indulging in lust is a mortal sin, provided of course, it is done in a way that is voluntary in itself and fully deliberate. This is the testimony of St. Paul in the letter to the Galatians, 5:19: "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are fornication, uncleanness, immodesty, luxury... Of the which I foretell you, as I have foretold to you, that they who do such things shall not obtain the kingdom of God." GLUTTONY: Overindulgence in food or drink. Gluttony is one of the seven capital sins (1866). The moral deformity discernible in this vice lies in its defiance of the order postulated by reason, which prescribes necessity as the measure of indulgence in eating and drinking. A glutton wants things according to the apt rendering of Father Joseph Rickably: too soon, too expensively, too much, too eagerly, too daintily. Someone habitually gluttonous is so wedded to the pleasures of the table as to live merely to eat and drink, so minded as to be of the number of those, described by the Apostle St. Paul, "whose god is their belly" (Phil 3:19). Is this notion of sin correct? This essay seeks to compare this moral depravity doctrine of the Puritans as seen in "Young Goodman Brown" to the Catholic Church's teaching on sin, a recognized standard. Such a belief is too harsh to be in accordance with Scripture, I think the Catholic Church would say. Consider how the CCC (Catechism of the Catholic Church) includes God's Mercy with its treatment of sin(pt3,s1,ch1,art8): 1848 As St. Paul affirms, "Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more."118 But to do its work grace must uncover sin so as to convert our hearts and bestow on us "righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."119 Like a physician who probes the wound before treating it, God, by his Word and by his Spirit, casts a living light on sin. . . . As Benjamin Franklin V states in "Goodman Brown and the Puritan Catechism," Hawthorne used John Cotton's Milk for Babes as the education source of Goodman Brown. It was the Puritan belief that man must be instructed to realize his own depravity, and therefore at childhood the education began. To a contemporary reader, however, these short stories would have been much more relevant, as along with a large amount of other Russian literature at the time, these two short stories are taken from real–life experience, and therefore, anyone can relate to the characters; for example, Dostoyevsky's 'A Gentle Creature' was based on a local news item that many reading the short story at the time would have been aware of. The deaths further differ in that while Pulkeria cared for her husband and made sure that everything was planned for after her passing, ensuring her husband's wellbeing, the young wife in "A Gentle Creature" simply seized her chance to commit suicide as soon as her husband left the room, leaving him in complete shock and grief. The husband, however, completely misses the point of the young girl jumping out of the window with a religious icon in her hands; he claims that death is up to chance and says "If I'd only got back five minutes, five minutes sooner!" Both marriages are also represented as fairly abnormal and strained. The 7 Deadly Sins and 7 Cardinal Virtues The 7 Deadly Sins and 7 Cardinal Virtues ======================================== Overview –––––––– The "Seven Deadly Sins"', also known as the "Capital Vices" or "Cardinal Sins", are a classification of vices that were originally used in early Christian teachings to educate and instruct followers concerning (immoral) fallen man's tendency to sin. The Roman Catholic Church divided sin into two principal categories: "venial", which are relatively minor, and could be forgiven through any sacrament of the Church, and the more severe "capital" or "mortal" sins, which, when committed, destroyed the life of grace, and created the threat of eternal damnation unless either absolved through the sacrament of confession, or otherwise forgiven ... The penitents in the Purgatorio were forced to stand between two trees, unable to reach or eat the fruit hanging from either, and were thus described as having a starved appearance. ==> Greed (Latin: avaritia) Synonyms: Greed (treachery, covetousness) Greed is, like Lust and Gluttony, a sin of excess. However, Greed (as seen by the Church) applied to the acquisition of wealth in particular. Thomas Aquinas wrote that Greed was "a sin against God, just as all mortal sins, in as much as man condemns things eternal for the sake of temporal things." In Dante's Purgatory, the penitents were bound and laid face down on the ground for having concentrated too much on earthly thoughts. "Avarice" is more of a blanket term that can describe many other examples of sinful behavior. These include disloyalty, deliberate betrayal, or treason, especially for personal gain, for example through bribery. Scavenging and hoarding of materials or objects, theft and robbery, especially by means of violence, trickery, or manipulation of authority are all actions that may be inspired by greed. Such misdeeds can include Simony, where one profits from soliciting goods within the actual confines of a church. ==> Sloth (Latin: acedia) Synonyms: Sloth (laziness, sadness, apathy)

Anyone could do this, thus it appears no different. Keller warns that Christians can be led to undervalue good work done by nonbelievers. What Christians must do is to "place a high value on all human work, done by all people, as a channel of God's love for his world." We are too busy to focus on what matters because "our hectic lives are examples of the narcotic effect of acedia among us, the "spiritual morphine" that Norris wrote about. He says, "And time yet for a hundred indecisions, and for a hundred visions and revisions, before the taking of the toast and tea" Prufrock is unable to make a decision, he is saying there is time to decide and not decide. Although in his case, he fails to act on his wishful thoughts of socializing with a woman. In a way, he is justifying his idleness by contemplating that there will be more time to act. According to Svendsen, he refers to how we distinguish the quality of our actions and how at times we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 20. Analysis Of The Deadliest Of Sins By Robertson Davies In The Deadliest Of Sins Robertson Davies, the seven deadly sins are briefly talked about but his main focus is directed towards the sin, Sloth. He talks about the sins in a speech to fellow Queen's University graduates and is explaining to them what sloth, or as he refers to it throughout the speech, Acedia, does to the mind and why it was considered a sin. I will summarize Davies points as well as add in my own opinion to the subject. In the beginning of Davies speech he explains that he is an author and how being an author is more of a state of mind rather than a job. He goes on to say that he will be quitting his job as an author and pursue a new job. Failure is something that Davies believes will come with finding a new career but he tells the university students that failure is something that is easy to live through and that the only failure that breaks the spirit and that failure is the failure in life itself. The thing about that type of failure is that it does not just come suddenly, it creeps up on you and grabs a hold on you with you knowing. Davies begins to talk to about how this failure is considered one of the seven deadly sins and this one in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is not the same meaning as how Sloth is known now which is to be physically lazy or sluggish. Davies goes onto explain how to recognize Acedia in people. He explains that Anatole France said that we mistake growing older as becoming more wise when in reality growing old doesn't mean we are gaining more wisdom. It simply means that we learn how to avoid things that hurt us and we teach ourselves that we need to avoid anything that causes pain. Davies says that if we can't feel pain in life then surely we can't feel joy either, therefore letting Acedia take over. That is why it was considered a sin, because it didn't brighten the mind but more so dimmed it which eventually just kills ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 21. Good And Evil In The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And Mr Hyde 1. Introduction The novella "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" by Robert Louise Stevenson, first published in 1886, is about the dichotomy of Good and Evil in humans. In this story Stevenson shows the natural curiosity of a scientist who uses himself as a test object in order to perform a self–experiment. The reader learns about the transgression of ethical limits in science. In my research paper I am going to analyze "Good versus Evil" in the novel. The reason why I decided to write about this book is because the concept of "Good" and "Evil", which coexists in all of us, forms the central subject. Stevenson's talent to captivate the reader with his unique writing ability is the reason why the novel is so well known and is considered a classic. From time immemorial the question of what, or who, can be considered good or evil arises. Stevenson's novel shows the characteristics of the respective elements by Dr. Jekyll's transformation into his evil twin Mr. Hyde and back. It is a fundamental behavior of human beings to clarify the battle between good and evil. The definition of these terms is scientifically analyzed and documented multiple times. ... The inner conflict begins with Dr. Jekyll's experiment to divide evil and virtue, the two provinces [...] that compound man's dual nature . Dr. Jekyll claims that one day "man will be ultimately known for a mere polity of multifarious, incongruous and independent denizens" . He hoped to separate and purify each element, however, he succeeded in bringing only the evil side into being. Although there were now two physical identities, one was purely evil; the other was still the old Henry Jekyll. He refers to Mr. Hyde using the pronoun "He", and applies it when he talks about himself. The body becomes the signifier of evil or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 22. Philosophy In Seven Sentences By Douglas Groothuis Philosophy in Seven Sentences written by Douglas Groothuis is a selective evaluation of seven philosophers and the consequences of their philosophies. It addresses both accuracies and flaws in these philosophers' theories and, in part, what it means to philosophize. It gives a concise and accurate explanation of the seven philosophies and strong justification for the agreement or dismissal of these views. Book Summary Protagoras' core teachings were, "Man is the measure of all things." and, brought to its logical conclusion, "error is impossible". Groothuis evaluates it as the concept that all things in the natural and so forth are measured by each individual, and are fully justified based upon how they feel. Groothuis emphasizes that this philosophy is built upon the foundation that perception is reality. He advises the readers to reject this philosophy because, "Statements cannot be true unless it ... Augustine uses this to present the argument that "Humans possess knowledge of... moral law... and their inability to obey it" producing "guilt over sin". "God is the best explanation for the awareness" and by sending a mediator, Christ, enables "our hearts [to] find rest in the grace offered by God alone". Descartes philosophy is expressed by Groothuis as being taken greatly out of context by the majority. The text describes Descartes as being an "earnest and humble seeker of truth" and it was this seeking of truth that caused Descartes to "test all that can be doubted" by doubting even his existence. This leads him to the realization that if there is a doubt there must be a doubter to suggest the questioning. This ultimately produced the philosophy, "I think, therefore I ... • 23. Melancholia In Orestes Research Paper Ancient Greece, depression was referred to as melancholia. Melancholia was portrayed in Orestes, ______. In a vase from 400 BC, Orestes is drawn having a ceremony to get rid of vengeful spirits that would not leave him alone since his mother was killed. In the book Orestes by Euripides, Orestes is depicted as a helpless, exhausted and motivationless person who barely ever wanted to eat but was constantly crying and sleeping. Jason the Argonaut is another Greek work that has to do with melancholia. Jason is described as a hero who is always in action trying to resolve problems. However, he becomes a helpless and bad–tempered person when his ship is wrecked on the coast of Libya. In the 4th century BC however, melancholia began to be viewed as an illness in Greek scientific work. For example, the physician Hippocrates wrote that melancholia was a depressive temperament that resulted when bodily "humors" or fluids were not balanced. According to Hippocrates, the body was composed of blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm. When someone became ill, it was thought that there was an excess amount of a substances. At the time, Hippocrates, as well as other Greek physicians, believed that having an excess amount of cold black bile in someone's body ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Soon, melancholia was viewed as a fashionable trend in the culture. Plays, such as Shakespeare's Hamlet, were now including characters that matched the description of a depressed ... • 24. Symbolism In The Mermaid Chair, By Sue Monk Kidd Abstract 'Island' is an emblem of both remoteness and nirvana in both East and West. In the East, to the Buddha, island is a positive symbol of revitalization in the core of the ocean of Samsara. In Commonwealth feminist writers such as Anita Desai and Sue Monk Kidd, the island becomes a metaphor for a woman's quest for freedom and identity. The Mermaid Chair is a vividly imagined novel about the spirit and the ecstasies of the body; one that illuminates a woman's self–awakening with the brilliant and power that only a writer of Kidd's ability could conjure. An island is a land mass that is often smaller than a continent. An island is normally surrounded by water completely. Egret island is a thin place, in the Celtic sense of the phrase, a place where the visible reality of everyday life and the invisible reality of the sacred interest, where mighty forces work mysteriously to bring about transformation. The main conflict in The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd is the mental and physical illness of Jessie Sullivan's– the main character, one of those unambiguous women with no desire to disturb the universe. • 25. Anger In Dante's The Grapes Of Wrath Wrath, being vindictive with malice & forethought. Anger is an emotion related to one's psychological interpretation of having been offended, wronged, or denied and a tendency to react through retaliation. Anger is a normal emotion that involves a strong uncomfortable and emotional response to a perceived provocation as displays of anger can also be used as a manipulation strategy for social influence. While many philosophers and writers have warned against the spontaneous and uncontrolled fits of anger, there has been disagreement over the intrinsic value of anger. Greed, Greed (Latin, avaritia), also known as avarice or covetousness, is, like lust and gluttony, a sin of excess. However, greed (as seen by the church) is applied to a very excessive or rapacious desire and pursuit of material possessions. Thomas Aquinas wrote, "Greed is a sin against God, just as all mortal sins, in as much as man condemns things eternal for the sake of temporal things." It is identified as a desire to be more important or attractive than others, failing to acknowledge the good work of others, and excessive love of self (especially holding self out of proper position toward God). Dante's definition was "love of self perverted to hatred and contempt for one's neighbour." In Jacob Bidermann's medieval miracle play, Cenodoxus, pride is the deadliest of all the sins and leads directly to the damnation of the titulary famed Parisian doctor. In perhaps the best– known example, the story of Lucifer, pride (his desire to compete with God) was what caused his fall from Heaven, and his resultant transformation into Satan.
