2. WBAN : Wireless Body Area Network
• WBAN consist of s set of mobile compact interconnecting sensors.
• Monitors vital body parameters and movements.
• Transmit data from human body to home base station.
• Maximum signal range 2m.
• Can offer 2 advantages;
i. Mobility and
ii. Location independent monitoring.

3. NETWORK ARCHITECTURE
• WBAN is a Three-tier architecture as shown in fig. 1.2
• Tier 1 consist of,
Sensor nodes,
Signal conditioner
A-D converters,
Microcontroller,
Transceiver.
• Tier 2 Personal server, WLAN, Cellular phones with GPS.
• Tier 3 Medical server.
3
5. NETWORK COMPONENTS
• WBAN consists of no. of sensor nodes
• WBAN sensor nodes must be of minimal weight , miniature
form factor , low power consumption.
• They can be implemented as tiny patches or incorporated
into clothes or shoes .
5
6. WBAN includes the no. of Physiological
sensors:
1. ECG
2. EMG ( Electromyography )
3. EEG sensor for brain electrical activity
4. BP sensor
5. Tilt sensor
6. Breathing sensor
7. Movement sensor
6
7. S-MAC Sensor MAC
• Features of S-MAC protocol includes
Periodic listening
Collision avoidance
Overheating avoidance
Message passing.
• If there is no event node goes to sleep mode and set timer as shown in fig.

7
10. Bluetooth
• Bluetooth is low tier, ad hoc wireless standard for short-range
communication.
• Designed for small and low cost devices.
• Range 1 to 100m and uses 2.4 GHz .
• Up to 8 BT devices can actively participate in a small network
Pico-net.
10
11. ZigBee
• ZigBee is a low tier, ad hoc, wireless standard similar to Bluetooth.
• It operates in 68MHz, 915MHz, and 2.4GHz ISM bands.
• Speed 250kbs at 2.4GHz .
• Follows 2 different technologies
1. Slotted channel structure Fig 1.3
2. Un-slotted channel structure.
11
12. Fig 1.3 : Slotted channel structure
• 1 Channel in 868-868.6Mhz 20kbps.
• 10 Channels in 902-928 MHz 40kbps.
• 16 Channels in 2.4-2.483 GHz 250kbp..s
12
13. WPAN Wireless Personal Area Network
• WPAN is a personal, short distance area wireless network.
• Networking of mobile computing devices PCs, Peripherals, Cell
phones, Printers etc..
• WPAN also called “Short Wireless Distance Networks”
• Range up to 10m.
13
14. WPAN Architecture
• Master slave configuration as shown in fig 1.6
• Master controls transmission schedules of all devices in the WPAN.
• Slaves can only communicate with the master.
• At a time only one device can transmits using TDMA technique.
14
16. BLUETOOTH
• Short range radio technology 2.4GHz ISM frequency band.
• Protocol stack arrangement of Bluetooth is shown in fig 1.5.
1. PHY radio layer Receives and Transmit
2. Baseband layer Enables physical RF link
3. Logical link Handles link establishment
4. L2CAP Lower connection based Bluetooth commn.
5. Audio profile Managing connection
6. Control Processes various control operations
16
18. 7. Other LLC Optional in devices are LAN, file tx, Sync.
8. RF Commn Multiplexing and flow control.
9. TCS Establishment of speech and data calls.
10.SDP Publishing and discovery of services.
11.Applcn. Profile Audio, Network, Telephony service Applcn..
18
19. LR-WPAN : ZigBee
• Frequency Band ISM band and International frequency bands
• Channel allocation :
a. 1 Channel : 868MHz.
b. 10 Channel : 915MHz.
c. 16 Channel : 2.4GHz.
• Uses MSK and BPSK modulation techniques
• Range 10-75m.
19
20. ZigBee Components
• The most basic component is a Device.
• Device FDD(Full Function Device) /
RDD (Reduced Function Device)
• FDD can operate in 3 modes :
a. Coordinator,
b. A router,
c. A device.
• RFD is intend for simple applications.
