2. About the Memorial
The memorial is a symbolic obelisk in recognition of the
students who attended the school and went to Europe to
fight in World War One. Construction started in 1915 but
there are no records of when it finished. It was built by
the younger students who didn’t go to war and they got
their fathers to help as well. At the time it was actually
illegal to build obelisks like this because the government
wanted people to sign up and not remember those who
died as it would discourage enlistment but our scholars
did it anyway.
3. About the Inscriptions
On the memorial plaque it says: ‘In memory of the
brave lads who attended this school and who died for
liberty and country in the Great War 1914-1918.’ The
inscription is written in all capitals and the obelisk is
built out of bricks. Students could pay 1 penny a brick
which in turn was put on the obelisk. Many students
gave more than one penny and even some gave up to
about 20 pence.
