• Copyright; copyright is the right to essentially
legally copy, share, and use another author or
creators work. Often, copyright permission
must be given by the author or creator to use
their work for it to be considered legal.

• Trademark; trademark is a symbol or a brand
that deciphers one company from another. It
is a sort of branding owned by the company
and it could be a symbol, slogan, or name. An
example of a trademark is that M in Monster
Energy drink.

• Fair Dealing; fair dealing falls under the
umbrella and outlines of the Copyright Act of
Canada and is tied the currently debated Bill
C-11. Fair dealing provides exemptions from
copyright for three reasons: research or study,
criticism or review, and news reporting. The
dealing must have a specific purpose and be
fair.
5. Important Copyright Terms
• Intellectual Property; intellectual property is
the main category in which certain creations
of property law fall under. Some examples of
these things include copyright, trademarks,
and patents.
6. Important Copy Right Terms
• Royalties; royalties is the cost or usage fee of
using or purchasing a certain asset from a
company. These payments are made through
a transaction between the buyer, (licensee) to
the owner (licenser). An example of this is the
purchase of a song through iTunes. You are
the buyer, and iTunes is the owner and the
artist collects royalties through your purchase.
7. Important Copyright Terms
• Plagiarism; the unethical use of another
person’s thoughts, ideas, language, or
expression and used or wrongfully claimed as
your own.
