How to SCORE in
FRQ/SECTION B
Keywords is THE KEYWORD!
• 1) It is IMPOSSIBLE to do well in FRQ.
Armed with the right tools, X-Factor! Quotient students have
been consistently tackling FRQs with confidence. Most students
have seen significant improvement in their FRQs, so getting close to
  FULL marks is not impossible!
• 2) Why is my answer wrong? I just don’t get it!
Examiners look for certain keywords in your answers. These
keywords help to give structure to your thoughts and answers.
• 3) I have to memorize answers from at least 10 past year
  papers do well for FRQs.
Thankfully, this is not true! Just remembering keywords will
bring you to newer heights. These keywords repeat themselves in
answer schemes though the questions that are asked are different.

COMMON MYTHS
• 1) Maintain a ‘keyword drawer’ for all topics tested in
  the exam.
• 2) Identify the topic tested in the question.
• 3) Identify ‘action words’ such as ‘describe’, ‘explain’,
  ‘observations’…
• 4) Zoom in to the ‘keyword drawer’ for the topic tested
  in the question.
• 5) Pick as many appropriate keywords as possible and
use them to string your answer together.

STEPS TO SUCCESS
• Heat, moves from hot  cold
• Gain heat, lose heat
• Expand (increase in volume), Contract (decrease in
  volume)
• Good conductor of heat/conducts heat quickly from ___
  to___
• Poor conductor of heat/conducts heat slowly from ___
  to___/ prevents heat loss.
• *This list is not complete. For a complete list, enroll your child in X-Factor! Quotient’s high impact and high
    performance science classes.

Heat Keyword Drawer
• Heat, moves from An iron bar at 85° is put into a tank containing water at 10°C.
hot  cold When the iron bar is placed into the tank of water, the water
• Gain heat, lose heat level in the tank rises.
• Expand (increase in
volume), Contract a) Write one other change that happens to the water in the
  (decrease in volume)
                              tank.
• Good conductor of The temperature of the iron bar falls and the temperature of the
  heat/conducts heat
  quickly from ___ water increases.
to___ b) Explain why the change in (a) takes place.
• Poor conductor of This is because heat moves from an area that is hotter in the
heat/conducts heat iron bar to an area that is cooler in the water. The iron bar
slowly from ___ looses heat and its temperature falls, the water gains heat and
to___/ prevents heat its temperature rises.
  loss.
• .

Heat Keyword Drawer

        Heat: Example 1
Ice is placed into a beaker of boiling water and an electronic
probe was inserted to track the temperature of the water.

• Heat, moves
  from hot  cold
• Gain heat, lose
heat a) What happens to the reading on the electronic probe?
• . The reading on the probe decreases.
                    b) Explain why the change in (a) takes place.
This is because heat moves from an area that is hotter in the
water to an area that is cooler in the ice. The boiling water
looses heat to the ice and its temperature falls.

        Heat: Example 2
• From the examples above, it can be seen that the SAME
KEYWORDS can be used to score points for different
  questions.
• Keywords are the secret to tackling any kind of exam
  questions!
• Maintaining a keyword ‘drawer’ and being able to use it
effectively is ESSENTIAL to scoring well in FRQs.
• With a comprehensive set of keyword ‘drawers’, YOUR
child holds the ANSWER KEY of any type of questions
he will ever see in his exams!

Keyword POWER!
• Review the keyword ‘drawers’ with your child before the
exam, especially the keyword columns in the worksheets.
• Check that your child remembers all the keywords in the
‘drawers’ so that they can effectively pick them out in the
  exam.
• Obtain professional feedback and further tips from your
child’s science teacher at X-Factor! Quotient.

Parents of X-Factor!
Quotient Students
• Enrol your child in an X-Factor! Quotient science class
TODAY where he/she will be given:
  • A comprehensive set of keywords is provided.
  • An impactful and fun learning environment where he/she
will learn the effective use of keywords.
  • Timely and relevant feedback by the teachers on how to
    improve their answers in FRQs.
  • Inspiration and Motivation to do well in life!
