1. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, you shall be able to:
1. define the factors affecting the rate of
reactions and concept of catalyst;
2. explain the effects of concentration,
temperature and particle size on the rate of
reaction;
3. present catalyst as an effective means of
affecting the rate of reaction.
3. Materials needed:
• Salt/Sugar
• Water (Hot, Cold and Room Temperature)
• Container
Preparation:
• Prepare three identical containers filled with equal
amounts of water at room temperature.
• Place a fixed amount of the solid substance (e.g., sugar
or salt) in each container. Make sure the amounts are the
same to keep the experiment fair.
4. Demonstration:
• Hold up the three containers and explain
that you're going to observe how fast the solid
substances dissolve in water.
• Start a timer for the demonstration.
• Submerge one container in hot water (you
can prepare this in advance), one in cold water,
and leave the third at room temperature.
• Observe and narrate the changes as the
substances dissolve. You should see differences
in the rate of dissolution for each container
5. Guide Question:
Ask them which container
dissolved the solid substance
the fastest and why they
think that happened.
6.
7. Activity: Factors Affecting
Reaction Rate
The rate at which reactants are consumed
and products are formed during chemical
reactions vary greatly. You will discover how
the different factors, such as concentration,
temperature and particle size affect the rate
of chemical reactions.
12. Questions:
1. Explain the effects of concentration
on the rate of chemical reaction.
2. How does temperature and particle
size affect the rate of chemical
reaction.
3. In the video, what is catalyst and
how does it work?
13.
14. Activity: What I Can Do
Just like catalysts explained, there are also some
factors that may affect us to grow or hinder our
rate of success. It may include your family,
friends, opportunities, or your personality.
Who/What are the influencers in your life? Write
it in a piece of bond paper (long).
15. Activity: Summarize ME
1. What are the factors affecting the rate of
reactions?
2. How do catalyst work as it affects the reaction
rate?
3. Describe the following:
a. Activation energy
b. Temperature
c. Concentration
d. Surface area and Particle size
16. Assessment
PART A. Direction: Choose the letter of the
correct answer.
1. How does a catalyst work in speeding up a reaction?
a. It lowers the activation energy.
b. It provides more energy.
c. It creates more reactants.
d. It increases the temperature
17. Assessment
2. Activation energy is the amount of energy
required to _________
a. Break the bonds between the reacting
molecules
b. Make the reacting particles collide
c. Form the bonds between the product
molecules
d. Convert the reactant to a single product
18. Assessment
PART B. True or False
3. Lowering the temperature of the
reaction increases the rate of the
reaction by increasing the energy of
the collisions between reacting
particles.
19. Assessment
4. Increasing the concentration of a
substance increases the kinetic energy
of the particles that make up the
substance.
5. Increasing the surface area of the
reactant, increases the rate of the
reaction.
20. Assignment
In your most creative way
through poster making, how will
you define the factors affecting
the reaction rate and catalyst?
