2. Pitch
Spotlight (Alternatively, The Spotlight) is a new music magazine that covers the
Rock and Alternative genres aimed at mostly male teenagers (13-18) with gender-
neutral elements. The readers are likely to be students with a more laid-back
interest in music.
It will cover rock music by showing a mix of more mainstream news in the genre
and also features less well-known bands, putting them into the Spotlight. It will
interview musicians and cover concerts and festivals, etc.
The style will take inspiration from other magazines of the genre, with a somewhat
“in your face” broken, urban, rocked-out look. The inside of the magazine will have
a balance of pictures and text, with some articles being greater in images and
others being greater in text, when necessary.
It will be published monthly and will cost £2.99 per issue.
An example of the double-page spread is a feature on the less well-known band
CryoShell, discussing their music and what they plan to do in the future. This will be
supported by a sidebar with a timeline of the music they have brought out so far.
3. Genre
Style/Attitude
The magazine style will mainly be the typical rock-
magazine uncontrolled, „individual‟ look. The results of my
survey saw Rock/Metal and Alternative genres coming up
as most popular, so a mix of both will be included in the
magazine, and the style and attitude will reflect on this.
Frequency of reading magazines
The attitude will be a more laid-back version of bigger
music magazines like Kerrang and NME, intended to be
more of a “pick up and read” magazine for those who
aren‟t so interested in music magazines, as shown by the
