2. Food Processing Efficiency
The TopNotch from Finis has proven to be the most
efficient, three stage, onion peeling machine.
Sustainable processing technology, with a maximum of
productivity and reliability.
TopNotch 1: 1.500 Onions per hour
TopNotch 3: 4.500 Onions per hour
TopNotch 4: 6.000 Onions per hour
TopNotch 6: 9.000 Onions per hour
TopNotch 8: 12.000 Onions per hour
ONION PEELING
3. With the new generation of onion peelers from Finis we
have developed a system which can be added with all
kind of new options to help you process the products
that your client is searching for.
Optionals:
- Infeed belt and singulator (1)*
- Automatic Orientation (2)
- Quick Change
- Double up
- Notching (3)*
- Coring (4)*
- Topping and tailing (5)
- Tailor made’s
- Peeling (6)*
- Waste separation (7)*
* Standard execution

4. The onion peelers from Finis are always executed with
indexing plates who are fabricated to process a certain
grading size.
To obtain the best efficiency we advice to grade all onions
between 20 or 30 mm.
for instance;
50 -> 80
60 -> 90
80 -> 110

GRADING / SIZING
Indexing plates
5. In case there is a need to process 2 different sizing groups
we can execute the machine with two different indexing
plates. In this case we would have a sorting “A” and a
sorting “B”. We call this, “Quick change”.
It means that we can change the used indexing plates by
pressing a button. Normally we use all indexing plates at
the same time but in this case we only use the indexing
plates which are chosen. The onions will only be placed
on the chosen group. The plates of the other group will be
empty and will be skipped at the stations.
Downside is that you can only run one sorting at the same
time.
for instance;

6. The double up option is developed for the same reason as
the quick change option.
The difference between both systems is that with the
quick change option the machine can only process one
sorting at the same time but with the double up feature it
can use two different sortings.
The disadvantage of the double up feature is that the
capacity per sorting is only halve. It is also necessary to
have 2 bunkers in front of the machine to feed the
machine equally with both sortings.
for instance;

7. For an optimized peeling result it is nessecary that the
onions are orientated top/tail in the vertical direction. To
do this, one or two operators (depending on the size of
the machine) are orientating the onions. Because they
can oversee an area of several indexing plates with
onions it is easy to keep up with the speed of the
machine. The average speed of the machine is about 25
cycles per minute.
MANUALLY ORIENTATED
8. The onions are fed into an orientation unit. Above this unit,
a camera is continuously taking pictures . A computer
processes these images and locates the top and tail
position of the onion. It then controls the orientation unit
and the onion starts to rotate until it is in the correct
position. The unit can orientate up to eight onions in 1.5
seconds in total to feed the FAUP onion peeling machine.
With the use of this patented system we can save up to 2
operators per machine.
OR AUTOMATICALLY
9. The onions are processed step by step.
After the orientation there are 4 slots where we can install
different kind of stations for different kind of purposes.
Slot A. and Slot B. are always meant for the notching and
for the peeling station.
Besides Notching and Peeling we have different kind of
systems available like;
- Coring
- Topping and Tailing
- Tailor made’s

10. As a standard the machine will be executed with a high
quality station for topping and tailing onions by meaning
of coring.
The station will most of all improve the yield and quality.
Options:
- Coring
- Topping and Tailing
- Combination of both systems 4/4
SLOT B. CORING
B.
11. If preferred it is possible to install a original topping and
tailing station in slot B.
If coring is still preferred but original topping and tailing is
also a demand we can or make a combination of both
systems in one slot, or we can install the topping and
tailing station in slot C.
SLOT B. TOPPING AND TAILING
B.
Topping and tailing
Combination
12. In the standard execution there will be a coring station
on slot B.
In case the original topping and tailing unit is a wish, we
can install this station on slot C.
This enables the possibility to choose between coring,
cutting or a combination between coring and cutting.
To prevent loosing space for cleaning and maintenance
we have developed a special TAT station which you can
roll out of the machine (only for the 6 and 8 lane
machine).
SLOT C. TOPPING AND TAILING
C.
13. As a new development we add a special way of peeling
onions. With this technique we ensure a closed shell with
a much longer shelf-life.
The half convenience peeled onions are processed with
a special station. We call this Tailor made.
This station notches around the root of the onion and
without topping and tailing we peel of the skin like the
onion on the right side.
The results on the left of the right onion is done by hand.
This station is only in combination with the coring station.
SLOT C. TAILOR MADE’S
C.
14. Short summary of all possibilities.
In case of automatic orientation, coring has to be chosen.
Automatic orientation does not work efficient on tailor
made’s or topping and tailing.
