1. Canon Commercial
This is the third commercial/advertisement on the radio that I have looked at as an individual and I
find it quiet interesting because it’s not your everyday ordinary commercial getting you to buy a
product, the advert actually starts with a man talking about taking pictures the right way this
Christmas and to make sure the lighting is good and he also gives a few helpful tips. I’m made aware
that it’s a Christmas advertisement and it is very informative about the camera, and also persuasive.
The overall message for this advert is probably to get you to by this canon camera because of all th e
cool things that come with it and how professionally you can take a picture without being a pro at
photography or with cameras.
The advert has packed a lot of highlighted things in a limited amount of time and they try to meet all
your photographer needs by giving tips like:
- Lighting
- Red eye
- Backgrounds
- Face
- Natural
- Self-timer
- Touch screen
- Face tracking
It’s not only a commercial but it is a contest too, you only realise at the end of the advert that you
can win this wonderful Canon Excess 200 camera which I personally think is another thing to attract
you to it but maybe a little too late because they fit it in at the end, although they may have done
this for a reason so they don’t gear up their listeners interests in just winning the camera instead of
buying it.
The background music for this commercial is Christmas bells and I know this because it’s an audio
effect that I’ve heard a lot of times and even used before/had the chance of using so I have come
across it before. Also the right music can make or break a radio ad. But you can't just throw any
music you like into your spot. There are laws that dictate what music you can and can't use although
they don’t use music instead they use sound effects the same rules still apply, but they don’t break
any certain rules in their commercial and I think this sound effect fits very well because it is
Christmas time and they are more or less advertising a Christmas present, so it works.
BCAP Code Rule 28.1, Section 28, on page 118 applies. It states that: Competitions should be
conducted fairly, prizes should be described accurately and rules should be clear and made known
but they aren’t made clear or made known, they only say “to win visit absolute radio” I don’t really
understand it because I suppose this is a joint advertisement as well as a competition but you don’t
find that out till the end.
