Willy Wood encourages schools to use mindfulness programs
to help students pay attention.
All teachers want their students to pay attention and get the
most out of every class. While technology experts are
developing new applications to help students stay focused,
recent studies have shown that maintaining attention is a
matter of building a child’s mindfulness.
Mindfulness is the psychological state of being in the moment.
It involves focusing attention on what is happening in the
surrounding environment and on the current state of the body.
 Teaching children to be mindful of their surroundings, helps
them develop the skills to notice when their attention is
wandering and how to refocus it to the present.
Mindfulness cultivates natural self-monitoring. It combines
neuro-scientific and psychological elements to help people
better manage their attention and behavior.
Researchers using mindfulness in schools have reported very
positive results. In Crooked Creek Elementary in Indianapolis,
Indiana, the whole school takes part in a mindfulness period.
Every morning, for 1 minute, students at the school close their
eyes and concentrate on the moment. In the program’s first
year, disciplinary referrals reduced drastically and no student
was suspended.

Mindfulness, Not Technology, is the Key to Staying Attentive

  • 2.  President of Educational Solutions International, Willy Wood of Columbia, MO, uses psychology and neuroscience to assess teaching practices. As the founder of WillyWoodTeaching.com, Willy Wood encourages schools to use mindfulness programs to help students pay attention. All teachers want their students to pay attention and get the most out of every class. While technology experts are developing new applications to help students stay focused, recent studies have shown that maintaining attention is a matter of building a child’s mindfulness. Mindfulness is the psychological state of being in the moment. It involves focusing attention on what is happening in the surrounding environment and on the current state of the body.
  • 3.  Teaching children to be mindful of their surroundings, helps them develop the skills to notice when their attention is wandering and how to refocus it to the present. Mindfulness cultivates natural self-monitoring. It combines neuro-scientific and psychological elements to help people better manage their attention and behavior. Researchers using mindfulness in schools have reported very positive results. In Crooked Creek Elementary in Indianapolis, Indiana, the whole school takes part in a mindfulness period. Every morning, for 1 minute, students at the school close their eyes and concentrate on the moment. In the program’s first year, disciplinary referrals reduced drastically and no student was suspended.
