Intro: 1Sam 13:14; Act 13:22
1Sam 13:14
14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue:
the LORD hath sought him
a man after his own heart,
and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his
people,
because thou hast not kept that
2. which the LORD commanded thee.
Acts 13:22
22 And when he had removed him,
he raised up unto them David to be their king;
to whom also he gave testimony,
and said,
I have found David the son of Jesse,
a man after mine own heart,
which shall fulfil all my will.
Text: 1Sam 16:18
18 Then answered one of the servants, and said,
Behold,
I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite,
that is cunning in playing,
and a mighty valiant man,
and a man of war,
and prudent in matters,
and a comely person,
and the LORD is with him.
…that is cunning in playing…
3. I. Creative (cunning).
Gen 25:27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a
cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a
plain man, dwelling in tents.
Esau was a Skillful hunter.
Exod 26:1 Moreover thou shalt make the tabernacle
with ten curtains of fine twined linen, and blue, and
purple, and scarlet: with cherubims of cunning work
shalt thou make them.
Skillfully embroidered original.
Exod 26:31 And thou shalt make a vail of blue, and
purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen of cunning
work: with cherubims shall it be made:
Exod 28:6 And they shall make the ephod of gold, of
blue, and of purple, of scarlet, and fine twined linen,
with cunning work.
Exod 28:15 And thou shalt make the breastplate of
judgment with cunning work; after the work of the
ephod thou shalt make it; of gold, of blue, and of
4. purple, and of scarlet, and of fine twined linen, shalt
thou make it.
Exod 31:2 See, I have called by name Bezaleel the
son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah:
Exod 31:4 To devise cunning works, to work in gold,
and in silver, and in brass,
1Sam 16:16 Let our lord now command thy servants,
which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a
cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass,
when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he
shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
II. Courageous (Mighty valiant man).
An exceptionally brave fighter
1Sam 14:52 And there was sore war against the
Philistines all the days of Saul: and when Saul saw any
strong man, or any valiant man, he took him unto
him.
1Sam 26:15 And David said to Abner, Art not thou a
valiant man? and who is like to thee in Israel?
5. wherefore then hast thou not kept thy lord the king?
for there came one of the people in to destroy the
king thy lord.
III. Champion (man of war).
Victoriousin many battles
In the Bible a champion is one who is the best warrior or the
middleman (the mediator).
1Sam 17:4 And there went out a champion out of the
camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose
height was six cubits and a span.
The Devil is sure to always have a “Champion” ready.
Matt 27:38 Then were there two thieves crucified with
him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.
The only Champion for life and death is Jesus Christ the
middleman (mediator) for eternity.
Ezek 22:30 And I sought for a man among them, that
should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before
me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found
none.
A child of God is called to be the Champion for those
around us. We’ve been given the ministry of reconciliation.
6. IV. Complimentary (prudent).
1st
mention, David is the picture of prudence.
Prov 12:16 A fool's wrath is presently known: but a
prudent man covereth shame.
Prov 12:23 A prudent man concealeth knowledge:
but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.
Prov 13:16 Every prudent man dealeth with
knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly.
Prov 14:8 The wisdom of the prudent is to
understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit.
Prov 14:15 The simple believeth every word: but the
prudent man looketh well to his going.
Prov 22:3 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and
hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are
punished.
Prov 27:12 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and
hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are
punished.
7. V. Consecration (the LORD is with him).
Gen 39:2 And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was
a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his
master the Egyptian.
1Sam 18:12-14 12 And Saul was afraid of David,
because the LORD was with him, and was departed
from Saul.
13 Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made
him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and
came in before the people.
14 And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways;
and the LORD was with him.
Matt 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things
whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with
you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Conclusion: Isa 3:1-4
8. Without the LORD none of these qualities are available to a
man. When a man turns away from God, God takes away these
character traits from the land to see if a man will turn back to
God.
Isa 3:1-4 1 For, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts,
doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah the
stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the
whole stay of water,
2 The mighty man, and the man of war, the judge,
and the prophet, and the prudent, and the ancient,
3 The captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and
the counsellor, and the cunning artificer, and the
eloquent orator.
4 And I will give children to be their princes, and
babes shall rule over them.
1Sam 6:6 Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as
the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when
he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let
the people go, and they departed?
Man’s trouble has always been a rebellious heart toward
God; even the Philistines could figure that out.
9. Prov 28:14 Happy is the man that feareth alway: but he
that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.
You will either be a man after God’s own heart, or you will
have a heart destine for failure.
