REFUSING THE PROVING
1. Refusing the Proving
Intro: Judg 3:1,4
Judg 3:1
1) Now these are the nations which the LORD
left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of
Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;
Judg 3:4
4) And they were to prove Israel by them, to
know whether they would hearken unto the
commandments of the LORD, which he
commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
2. There are thirteen judges.
When the people do not govern themselves
problems will result.
This is not the end of the story God’s
plan ‘b’ is to give them an individual to
lead.
Deliverance, freedom and victory come
through a man, not through a movement or
a multitude.
Communism socialism and democracy are
all systems to deceive the mass into
believing everyone governs themselves.
America was set up as a Republic (a group
of men) that rule the mass of men.
God’s answer to government is one man.
1. Othniel (Judg 3:7-11)
3. 2. Ehud (Judg 3:12-30)

Text: Judg 3:6-7
6) And they took their daughters to be their
wives, and gave their daughters to their sons,
and served their gods.
7) And the children of Israel did evil in the sight
of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God,
and served Baalim and the groves.
4. Refusing the Proving
I. Integration- Judg 3:6a
This is a one-sided compromise.
The world doesn’t want to include your
morals and standards; it will demand
you adopt theirs.
Judg 3:6
6) And they took their daughters to be their
wives, and gave their daughters to their sons…
5. 1Kgs 11:1
But king Solomon loved many strange
women, together with the daughter of
Pharaoh, women of the Moabites,
Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and
Hittites;
Ezra 9:11
Which thou hast commanded by thy
servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto
which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land
with the filthiness of the people of the lands,
with their abominations, which have filled it
from one end to another with their
uncleanness.
Ezra 9:12
Now therefore give not your daughters unto
their sons, neither take their daughters unto
your sons, nor seek their peace or their
wealth for ever: that ye may be strong, and
6. eat the good of the land, and leave it for an
inheritance to your children for ever.
Isa 1:19
If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat
the good of the land:
II. Idolatry- Judg 3:6b
Judg 3:6
6) …and served their gods.
Lev 17:7
And they shall no more offer their sacrifices
unto devils, after whom they have gone a
7. whoring. This shall be a statute for ever
unto them throughout their generations.
Deut 32:17
They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to
gods whom they knew not, to new gods that
came newly up, whom your fathers feared
not.
1Cor 10:19-22
19 What say I then? that the idol is any
thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to
idols is any thing?
20 But I say, that the things which the
Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils,
and not to God: and I would not that ye
should have fellowship with devils.
21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and
the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of
the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.
8. 22 Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are
we stronger than he?
III. Insult- Judg 3:7a
Judg 3:7
7) And the children of Israel did evil in the
sight of the LORD…
Ezek 22:14
Can thine heart endure, or can thine hands
be strong, in the days that I shall deal with
thee? I the LORD have spoken it, and will
do it.
9. 1Cor 10:22
Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we
stronger than he?
Jas 4:10
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord,
and he shall lift you up.
1Pet 5:6
Humble yourselves therefore under the
mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you
in due time:
IV. Ignorance- Judg 3:7b
10. Judg 3:7
7) …and forgat the LORD their God…
1Sam 12:9
And when they forgat the LORD their God,
he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain
of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of
the Philistines, and into the hand of the king
of Moab, and they fought against them.
Ps 106:13-14
13 They soon forgat his works; they waited
not for his counsel:
14 But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness,
and tempted God in the desert.
Jer 2:32-33
32 Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a
bride her attire? yet my people have
forgotten me days without number.
11. 33 Why trimmest thou thy way to seek
love? therefore hast thou also taught the
wicked ones thy ways.
V. Enslavement- Judg 3:7c
Judg 3:7
7) …and served Baalim and the groves.
Deut 16:21
Thou shalt not plant thee a grove of any
trees near unto the altar of the LORD thy
God, which thou shalt make thee.
12. 1Kgs 14:15
For the LORD shall smite Israel, as a reed is
shaken in the water, and he shall root up
Israel out of this good land, which he gave
to their fathers, and shall scatter them
beyond the river, because they have made
their groves, provoking the LORD to anger.
1Kgs 14:23-24
23 For they also built them high places, and
images, and groves, on every high hill, and
under every green tree.
24 And there were also sodomites in the
land: and they did according to all the
abominations of the nations which the
LORD cast out before the children of Israel.
Isa 57:5
Enflaming yourselves with idols under
every green tree, slaying the children in the
valleys under the clifts of the rocks?
13. VI. Improvement- Judg 3:9
Judg 3:9
9) And when the children of Israel cried unto
the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to
the children of Israel, who delivered them, even
Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger
brother.
Jer 3:12-13
12 Go and proclaim these words toward the
north, and say, Return, thou backsliding
Israel, saith the LORD; and I will not cause
mine anger to fall upon you: for I am
14. merciful, saith the LORD, and I will not
keep anger for ever.
13 Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that
thou hast transgressed against the LORD thy
God, and hast scattered thy ways to the
strangers under every green tree, and ye
have not obeyed my voice, saith the LORD.
Prov 28:13
He that covereth his sins shall not prosper:
but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them
shall have mercy.
1John 1:9-10
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and
just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us
from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we
make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
