FAITH TO GO BEYOND WHAT YOU KNOW
1. Faith to go Beyond what you
Know
Text: Gen 12:1-8
Intro:
Heb 11:8-10
8) By faith Abraham, when he was called to go
out into a place which he should after receive
for an inheritance,
obeyed; and he went out,
not knowing whither he went.
2. 9) By faith he sojourned in
the land of promise,
as in a strange country,
dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob,
the heirs with him of the same promise:
10) For he looked for a city which hath
foundations,
whose builder and maker is God.
Chapter 12 of Genesis begins the account of
Abram (Abraham). In the previous chapter
we saw man attempting to build a city to
reach to heaven; in chapter 12 we see God
calling a man to inherit a City built by God, if
he would follow God’s directions.
3. Gen12:1-8
1) Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get
thee out of thy country,
and from thy kindred,
and from thy father's house,
unto a land that I will shew thee:
2) And I will make of thee a great nation, and I
will bless thee,
and make thy name great;
and thou shalt be a blessing:
4. 3) And I will bless them that bless thee, and
curse him that curseth thee:
and in thee shall all families of the earth be
blessed.
4) So Abram departed,
as the LORD had spoken unto him;
and Lot went with him:
5. and Abram was seventy and five years old when
he departed out of Haran.
5) And Abram took Sarai his wife,
and Lot his brother's son,
and all their substance that they had gathered,
and the souls that they had gotten in Haran;
and they went forth to go into the land of
Canaan;
and into the land of Canaan they came.
6) And Abram passed through the land unto the
place of Sichem,
unto the plain of Moreh.
And the Canaanite was then in the land.
7) And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and
said,
6. Unto thy seed will I give this land:
and there builded he an altar unto the LORD,
who appeared unto him.
8) And he removed from thence unto a
mountain on the east of Bethel,
and pitched his tent,
having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east:
and there he builded an altar unto the LORD,
and called upon the name of the LORD.
7. I. Riddance- Gen 12:1
…Get thee out
of thy country,
and from thy kindred,
and from thy father's house,
unto a land that I will shew thee…
Before the law God’s command was a riddance
of worldly ties and a dependance on him alone.
8. Under the dispensation of law David gives
us a prophetic Psalm about Christ in his
millennial kingdom.
Ps 45:6-7
6 Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever:
the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre.
7 Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest
wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath
anointed thee with the oil of gladness above
thy fellows.
Ps 45:10-11
10 Hearken, O daughter, and consider, and
incline thine ear; forget also thine own
people, and thy father's house;
11 So shall the king greatly desire thy
beauty: for he is thy Lord; and worship thou
him.
9. Likewise, Jesus’ instruction when he came to
earth was the same.
Luke 14:33 So likewise, whosoever he be
of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he
cannot be my disciple.
Paul gives the same command for Christians in
our age.
2Cor 6:17 Wherefore come out from
among them, and be ye separate, saith the
Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I
will receive you,
In the Tribulation the instruction from heaven is
the same message.
Rev 18:4 And I heard another voice from
heaven, saying, Come out of her, my
10. people, that ye be not partakers of her sins,
and that ye receive not of her plagues.
II. Reward- Gen 12:2
And I will make of thee a great nation, and
I will bless thee,
and make thy name great;
and thou shalt be a blessing:
Gen 11:4 And they said, Go to, let us build
us a city and a tower, whose top may reach
unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest
11. we be scattered abroad upon the face of the
whole earth.
Ps 49:16-17 16 Be not thou afraid when
one is made rich, when the glory of his
house is increased; 17 For when he dieth he
shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not
descend after him.
Phil 2:9-10 9 Wherefore God also hath
highly exalted him, and given him a name
which is above every name: 10 That at the
name of Jesus every knee should bow, of
things in heaven, and things in earth, and
things under the earth;
Ps 138:2 I will worship toward thy holy
temple, and praise thy name for thy
lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou
hast magnified thy word above all thy name.
12. Rev 3:1 And unto the angel of the church in
Sardis write; These things saith he that hath
the seven Spirits of God, and the seven
stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a
name that thou livest, and art dead.
III. Regret- Gen 12:6
…And the Canaanite was then in the land.
Ps 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for
thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they
comfort me.
13. Prov 10:22 The blessing of the LORD, it
maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.
Isa 41:10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be
not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will
strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will
uphold thee with the right hand of my
righteousness.
Matt 5:14-15 14 Ye are the light of the
world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it
under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it
giveth light unto all that are in the house.
God hath not promised skies always blue,
Flower-strewn pathways all our lives through;
God hath not promised sun without rain,
Joy without sorrow, peace without pain.
14. God hath not promised smooth roads and wide,
Swift, easy travel, needing no guide;
Never a mountain, rocky and steep,
Never a river, turbid and deep.
But God hath promised strength for the day,
Rest for the labor, light for the way,
Grace for the trials, help from above,
Unfailing sympathy, undying love.
15. IV. Reliance- Gen 12:8
…and there he builded an altar…
Abram bore his continual wanderings patiently,
our delicacy is utterly inexcusable, when we
murmur against God, if he does not grant us a
quiet nest. Certainly, when Christ has opened
heaven to us, and daily invites us thither to
dwell with himself; we should not take it amiss,
if he chooses that we should be strangers in the
world.
16. This continual life of struggle and sojourn
was no doubt a sacrifice for a man pushing
80yrs old.
We are told two times in this short passage
that Abram built an altar.
This was a public display of Abram’s
reliance on God and this renewal of
commitment to God.
We too must build an altar, or the journey
will overtake our focus instead of the
destination.
17. Conclusion- Gen 12:5
…and into the land of Canaan they came.
Exod 13:21-22 21 And the LORD went
before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead
them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to
give them light; to go by day and night:
22 He took not away the pillar of the cloud by
day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before
the people.
Num 10:33 And they departed from the mount
of the LORD three days' journey: and the ark of
the covenant of the LORD went before them in
18. the three days' journey, to search out a resting
place for them.
Deut 1:32-33 32 Yet in this thing ye did not
believe the LORD your God,
33 Who went in the way before you, to search
you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by
night, to shew you by what way ye should go,
and in a cloud by day.
