1. Babylon at Bat
I. Strike one: Gen 10:9-10
Gen 10:8-9
8 And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty
one in the earth.
9 He was a mighty hunter before the LORD:
wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty
hunter before the LORD.
Gen 13:13
13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and
sinners before the LORD exceedingly.
Gen 10:10
10 And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel,
and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of
Shinar.
Gen 11:1-9
1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of
one speech.
2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the
east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar;
and they dwelt there.
2. 3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make
brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick
for stone, and slime had they for morter.
4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a
tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us
make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon
the face of the whole earth.
5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the
tower, which the children of men builded.
6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and
they have all one language; and this they begin to
do: and now nothing will be restrained from them,
which they have imagined to do.
7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their
language, that they may not understand one
another's speech.
8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence
upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to
build the city.
9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because
the LORD did there confound the language of all the
3. earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them
abroad upon the face of all the earth.
A. Unity of Rebellion
Gen 11:1
1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of
one speech.
You may have the same language as the nation
you live in, but a Christian should have a
different speech.
Sin perverts the blessing of verbal communication
into conspiracy against God.
B. Unity of Inferiority
Gen 11:3-4
3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make
brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick
for stone, and slime had they for morter.
4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a
tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us
make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon
the face of the whole earth.
Their name is made up by replacing God’s
creation (stone) with a brick.
1Pet 2:4
4. 4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone,
disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God,
and precious,
1Pet 2:7-8
7 Unto you therefore which believe he is
precious: but unto them which be disobedient,
the stone which the builders disallowed, the
same is made the head of the corner,
8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of
offence, even to them which stumble at the
word, being disobedient: whereunto also they
were appointed.
Exod 1:14
14 And they made their lives bitter with hard
bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all
manner of service in the field: all their service,
wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.
Isa 9:10-11
10 The bricks are fallen down, but we will
build with hewn stones: the sycomores are cut
down, but we will change them into cedars.
11 Therefore the LORD shall set up the
adversaries of Rezin against him, and join his
enemies together;
5. Brick is a poor substitute for the Stone. There
must be some means of holding together this
illusion of a convenient “god”. The only choice is
slime.
Gen 14:10
10 And the vale of Siddim was full of
slimepits; and the kings of Sodom and
Gomorrah fled, and fell there; and they that
remained fled to the mountain.
Prov 4:16-17
16 For they sleep not, except they have done
mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they
cause some to fall.
17 For they eat the bread of wickedness, and
drink the wine of violence.
Isa 57:20
20 But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it
cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt.
Mic 2:1
1 Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil
upon their beds! when the morning is light, they
practise it, because it is in the power of their
hand.
6. C. Unity in Fear of Correction
Gen 11:4
4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a
tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let
us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad
upon the face of the whole earth.
Prov 13:15
15 …the way of transgressors is hard.
Prov 13:21
21 Evil pursueth sinners…
Ps 140:11
11 …evil shall hunt the violent man to
overthrow him.
We are punished not only for our sins but by
them, “sin will find you out”.
Jer 2:19
19 Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and
thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore
and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou
hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear
is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.
The side effects of sin is not sin’s choice but
God’s command.
7. Jer 16:16-17
16 Behold, I will send for many fishers, saith the
LORD, and they shall fish them; and after will I send
for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from
every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the
holes of the rocks.
17 For mine eyes are upon all their ways: they are
not hid from my face, neither is their iniquity
hid from mine eyes.
Gen 11:4
… lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the
whole earth.
Gen 11:6
6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and
they have all one language; and this they begin to
do: and now nothing will be restrained from
them, which they have imagined to do.
Gen 6:5
5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man
was great in the earth, and that every
imagination of the thoughts of his heart was
only evil continually.
Acts 17:26-27
8. 26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men
for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath
determined the times before appointed, and the
bounds of their habitation;
27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they
might feel after him, and find him, though he be not
far from every one of us:
This is the sad cycle of mans attempts to
construct pleasure and protection by means of
brittle bricks and slime.
Daniel gives this omens message to Belshazzar
just before Babylon’s
II. Strike Two: Dan 5:22-26
Dan 5:22
thou knewest all this
hast not humbled thine heart
Dan 5:23
But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord
hast thou not glorified (God)
Dan 5:26
9. God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished
it.
Jer 51:44-45
44 And I will punish Bel in Babylon, and I will bring
forth out of his mouth that which he hath swallowed
up: and the nations shall not flow together any
more unto him: yea, the wall of Babylon shall fall.
45 My people, go ye out of the midst of her, and
deliver ye every man his soul from the fierce anger of
the LORD.
III. Strike Three: Rev 19:10
Rev 18:10
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment,
saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that
mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
Rev 18:16-17
16 And saying, Alas, alas, that great city, that
was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and
scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious
stones, and pearls!
17 For in one hour so great riches is come to
nought. And every shipmaster, and all the
10. company in ships, and sailors, and as many as
trade by sea, stood afar off,
Rev 18:19
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried,
weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that
great city, wherein were made rich all that had
ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for
in one hour is she made desolate.
Conclusion: Isa 2:10-12
The Lord is coming one of these days, and when He
does, the haughtiness of Nimrod, Belshazzar and the
Antichrist will be brought low.
Then will men
Isa 2:10
10 Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the
dust, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of
his majesty.
Isa 2:11
11 The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and
the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down,
and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.
11. Isa 2:12
12 For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be
upon every one that is proud and lofty, and
upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be
brought low:
Babylon’s spirit of pride and arrogance may
dominate this world, and a man may lift himself
against the God of Heaven, but God will bring him
down, even as He brought Babylon down.
This knowledge for a Christian should cause us
to seek warn in sincerity not the hypocrisy of
hoping for the day of destruction.
Jer 17:16
16 As for me, I have not hastened from being a
pastor to follow thee: neither have I desired the
woeful day; thou knowest: that which came out of
my lips was right before thee.
Jer 13:17
17 But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in
secret places for your pride; and mine eye shall weep
sore, and run down with tears, because the LORD'S
flock is carried away captive.
