6. RURAL DEVELOPMENT AND ENVIRONMENT
The goal of this project was to reverse the deleterious erosion process taking place in a
small fishing community in Andhra Pradesh. The first objective was to collect data regarding
the land use pattern along the coast, as well as the effect that industrialization is having on
the costal land and water bodies. The second objective was to intervene with public policy
workshops for local community members to advocate for regulations that would create
sustainable environmental and economic conditions for the impacted villages.

16. Justice for Bhopal
On December 3rd, 1984, thousands of
people in Bhopal, India, were gassed to
death after a catastrophic chemical leak
at a Union Carbide pesticide plant. More
than 150,000 people were left severely
disabled, of whom 22,000 have since
died of their injuries, in a disaster now
widely acknowledged as the world’s
worst-ever industrial disaster.
AID Ann Arbor has raised
awareness of this issue on
campus by staging protests
and visiting the DOW board
members' houses in Midland,
Michigan.
17. Probably the longest-standing fight for
justice by survivors of an industrial disaster
waged against a transnational
corporation, the Bhopal struggle
epitomizes the worst abuses of
globalization and the challenges
involved in holding corporations
accountable. To find out more or to join
