BRANA is a brewery in Haiti that employs over 1,200 people directly and supports 55,300 indirect jobs. It provides benefits like health insurance, pension, training and safety equipment to employees. BRANA has implemented safety regulations that have reduced accident rates. It also runs a youth talent program that recruits students and offers 40% of them permanent positions. Additionally, BRANA partners with local farmers through a project called SMASH to grow sorghum as a locally sourced ingredient, replacing imports. This benefits smallholder farmers by training them and increasing their incomes.

INVESTING IN EMPLOYEES
As one of Haiti’s largest employers, we strive to provide our employees with a safe and healthy
work environment. We believe it is important to create a workplace in which employees feel
engaged and can perform at their best by providing the following benefits:
Part of our commitment to sustainable development in Haiti is a focus on SAFETY FIRST. As a
result of implementing rigorous safety regulations, we noticed a notable drop in the accident
rates at BRANA.
BRANA takes its role as an industry sector leader seriously. We look forward to continuing to
play an integral role in growing the country’s economy by providing reliable, sustainable and
safe employment.

3. Since 2013, BRANA has been recruiting top students
from different Haitian universities and technical schools
for our yearly Young Talent Attraction Program. By
providing exposure to a professional workplace to
these young graduates which represent Haiti’s up and
coming skilled workers, we are investing in the country’s
future professionals.
Out of an average of 17 student interns every year,
40% are permanently recruited to join the com-
pany.
The foundation’s focus on education was put in place
to shorten the wide gap between the offer and the
demand for qualified workers in Haiti. We support
environmentally friendly initiatives that guarantee
sustainable protection of the natural resources and
that contribute towards reforestation of Haiti. The
foundation supports the use of alternative energy by
making solar and other alternative energy equipment
available to people that cannot afford them.
In July 2012, Fondation BRANA was established
to support and empower Haitian society.

INVESTING IN HAITI’S AGRICULTURE
As the country’s sole brewery we actively promote the enjoyment of beer in
moderation. BRANA is the first distributor of alcohol in Haiti to launch a responsible
consumption campaign. In its’third year now, the campaign engages artists in Haiti to design
art that captures the “Don’t Drink and Drive” slogan. Each year, the winning design is used
in our promotional material all over the country, encouraging and supporting Haiti’s graphic
designers.
Fondation BRANA partners with external agencies to communicate to young people about
the responsible consumption of alcoholic beverages. In 2015, BRANA will be launching Enjoy
Responsibly Day for the first time in Haiti to raise awareness within the company about the
impacts of alcohol abuse.
SMASH will work with up to 18,000 smallholder farmers
Local sourcing is at the heart of HEINEKEN’s “Brewing a Better World” sustainability strategy.
In July 2013, we launched the Smallholders Alliance for Sorghum in Haiti (SMASH) project
to replace imported malt with locally grown sorghum for our famous Malta H beverage. We
celebrated the first harvest in July 2014 and shared that joyous occasion with USAID, who
have been co-funding SMASH since the harvest. The Inter-American Development Bank
(IDB) has recently decided to provide funds for SMASH. With this additional funding, we are
able to expand the project to other regions of Haiti. In keeping with its local procurement
commitment, BRANA selected a local management firm, Papyrus S.A. to implement SMASH.
SMASH Objectives:
