In linear algebra, an eigenvector characteristic vectorof a linear transformation is a
nonzero vector that changesat most by a scalar factor whenthat lineartransformationisappliedto
it.The corresponding eigenvalue,oftendenotedby LAMBDA,isthe factorbywhichthe eigenvectoris
scaled.
Eigenvalues and eigenvectors are only for square matrices. Eigenvectors are by definition nonzero.
Eigenvaluesmaybe equal tozero.We do not considerthe zerovectortobe an eigenvector:since A 0
= 0 = λ 0 for every scalar λ , the associated eigenvalue would be undefined.
