The English writing system has a complex alphabetic code whereby letters represent sounds in inconsistent ways. One sound can be represented by different letter combinations and one letter combination can represent different sounds. Teachers need to explicitly teach the letter-sound correspondences to help students learn to read and spell words. They should begin with a simple code using mainly one-to-one letter-sound matches and gradually introduce more complex spelling patterns. Students must master decoding, encoding, and handwriting skills by applying their growing knowledge of the alphabetic code.
