2. Type 1 Diabetes: What is it?
 Diabetes mellitus
 Juvenile diabetes or insulin dependent diabetes
 A disorder of which the body’s immune system attacks
and destroys certain cells in the pancreas

 Usually diagnosed in children and young adults
 Type 1 or juvenile diabetes affects 70,000 children
under the age of 15 years every year.

 Type 1 diabetes is a disorder of the human immune
system that makes it difficult for the body to produce
insulin.
 Without insulin, the body cannot convert sugar from
food into nutrients for cells.
 This kind of disorder can be passed down through
families.

• High blood sugar (hyperglycemia). Your blood sugar can
rise for many reasons:
• eating too much
• eating the wrong types of foods
• not taking enough insulin

 Hypoglycemia unawareness- the body no longer
reacts to low blood sugar with symptoms such as
lightheadedness and headaches
 therefore unable to detect a decline in blood sugar
levels.
 The more you experience low blood sugars the more
susceptible you are to hypoglycemia unawareness.

 Diabetes is a silent epidemic and according to WHO
there are 246 million people in the world living with
diabetes. This is almost 6% of the world's adult
population.
 The Asian population is affected five times more with
diabetes than the white population
The cost of treating diabetes and its other problems are
estimated at 215-375 billion US dollars.

