Genre Challenges
Overview
In this unit, we’ll look at style as a product of genre: those semi-stable forms of
communication that arise from the regular need to respond to a specific situation (like
marriage, or death, or the need to sell something, or the need to organize college
courses). Because each genre is unique in its purpose and audience, it also has its own
unique style that can be reproduced by different writers, to make writing easier and
more rhetorically appropriate.

By the time you’ve completed this unit, you should be able to…
• Define “genre."
• Explain how and why genres are rhetorical.
• Analyze the stylistic and rhetorical features of a specific genre.
• Demonstrate your "genre knowledge" by effectively reproducing and
manipulating that genre.
