1. Report: NLS Debate 2010
The 9th
edition of the NLS Debate was organized from the 6th
to the 10th
of November 2010.
The NLS Debate is the sub-continent’s biggest parliamentary debating tournament and this year
saw 58 teams participating over five days in an intensive competition
The Debate Society, VIT University had sent 1 team comprising of three members. Yusuf
Roohnai, Prateek Patnaik and Gufran Pathan were representing VIT University at the 9th
NLS
Debate, 2010.
There were 6 preliminary rounds. VIT University by winning 3 of the 8 preliminary rounds
qualified for the next round of knock outs(novice breaks).
Quarter- Finals
Knockout Rounds
VIT University (Proposition) Vs Indian Law School, Pune (Opposition).
Motion- This house believes that reconciliation should never be an excuse to not prosecute
war criminals
Winner- VIT University
Semi- Finals
VIT University (Opposition) Vs Faculty of Arts, Colombo, Sri Lanka (Proposition).
Motion- This house believes that people who choose not to vote for two consecutive
elections should lose their right to vote
Winner- VIT University
Finals
VIT University (Opposition) Vs Faculty of Law, Colombo, Sri Lanka (Proposition).
Motion- This house will disallow retired soldiers from joining private military corporations
Winner- VIT University
VIT University won the finals (novice break). The finals were against the Sri Lankan Team from
the Faculty of Law, Colombo and the Semis were against Faculty of Arts, Colombo. VIT
University beat both teams from Sri Lanka and won the novice finals of the 9th
NLS Debate
tournament.
Parliamentary debating is a format of debating that has a team (3 members) defending a
motion as the government and the other opposing it as the opposition. The motions (topics) are
2. given 15 minutes before the debate. Adjudicators, who themselves have to compete among
one another, judge the debate.
This dynamic form of debating requires one to be quick on one’s feet, engaging with the matter
brought up by the speakers and doing all this in as clear and crisp a manner as possible.
