The mark scheme says that this is how you are
going to earn the 8 marks for this question:
•1 or 2 marks for your ‘description’ of the source
•Up to 6 more marks for ‘detailed description of
several aspects’
Note that the mark scheme says that to earn full marks you
‘in detail’ means facts, dates, names, specialised terms …
need to describe ‘at least two’ aspects ‘in detail’ … so try to

•Prisoners (cf. Gulag labour was used for building
Stalin’s dams, canals, towns etc.)
•Terrible conditions – cold, hand tools (cf. deaths)
YET lots of things it DOESN’T tell us:
•Why they were there; details of daily life such as
food and treatment; statistics such as how many
died
