Java weighed up the two boys:
1. Sam
was good-looking, and had a car.
2. Isaac
was kind, and a brilliant cook.
– i.e. she could see points on both sides!

You answer the ‘Either/or’ question
in much the same way!

The ‘Either/or’ question gives two possible answers
to a question, and asks you to choose the more
important.
‘Which of the following did more to cause the
Second World War:
a. Hitler’s occupation of Czechoslovakia
(March 1939)
b. the Nazi–Soviet Pact (August 1939)?’
Click to
continue
Note here that the underlying question is about ‘the causes of
the Second World War’.
You need to make sure that you keep this in mind the whole
time you are explaining your answer.

The mark scheme requires you to address both
points to earn the 10 marks for this question, i.e.
a. Hitler’s occupation of Czechoslovakia
(March 1939)
b. the Nazi–Soviet Pact (August 1939)

Note that the number of marks you get depends on how
fully, for each point, you:
• describe what happened
• explain [how it brought war nearer]
• assess its importance [in causing the war].

Describe (what happened):
Tiso – Hacha – Prague – 15 March 1939.
Explain (how it brought war nearer):
Hitler had broken his promises at Munich. Britain
started rearming. Chamberlain guaranteed Poland.
Assess (its importance in causing the war):
Everyone realised appeasement had failed and that war
was inevitable - they began to get ready as quickly as
possible.
BUT it was not the ‘last step’; Chamberlain STILL had
one chance to stop war – an alliance with Stalin. Click to

Describe (what happened):
Drax – Ribbentrop – trade treaty – 23 Aug – secret
protocol.
Explain (how it brought war nearer):
Freed up Hitler to invade Poland; Britain became more
determined (showed him as an opportunist and a trickster).
Assess (its importance in causing the war):
Only Stalin had been in a position to stop Hitler
conquering Poland. (Hitler did not believe Britain would
dare to fight.) Nine days later, on 1 sept, Hitler invaded
Poland.
