Learning strategies :
To understand about middle and mean, its relevance in
mathematics (STATISTICS) and its importance in daily life
through observations, organization of chart and by analyzing the
prepared notes of the pupil.
Middle, Mean
(i) In an arithmetic sequence the numbers are distributed in
the same fashion on either side of the middle of the first
and the last.
(ii) Mean is obtained by dividing the sum of observations by
number of observations.
(i) Concept of middle
(ii) Concept of mean
To find middle and mean
The pupil
(i) will recalls the term middle and mean
(ii) will identifies the concept of middle and mean
(iii) will discuss the problem on observations with other
students
Pupils have knowledge on sum and division.
Usual class room aids, paper cutouts, charts.
(i) Group discussion
(ii) Meaningful verbal explanation
(iii) Observation
(iv) Activity
(v) Observing tables, charts etc.

INTRODUCTION
Activity – 1
Ascending order is 3, 5, 7, 8, 9
Descending order is 8, 6, 5, 3, 2
PRESENTATION
Activity – 2
1, 3, 4, 8, 9
middle is 4 (B.B)
Activity – 3
40, 50, 55, 43, 57
Sum = 40 + 50 + 55 + 43 + 57
= 245
(i) Arrange the following
observations into ascending
order.
9, 3, 7, 8, 5
(ii) Arrange the following numbers
into descending order
6, 3, 2, 8, 5
Through these questions the teacher
introduce the topic
Teacher writes on the black board as
9, 8, 1, 4, 3 and asks the pupil to find
the middle.
1, 3, 4, 8, 9
Middle is 4
Teacher arrange the students into 4
groups and each group contain 5
students. The teacher calls the students
from each group and arrange them
orderly and then asks each group to
find the middle one. From these
activities the pupils understand the
term ‘middle’.
The teacher says the students of each
group to write their weights. Teacher
notes the weight of the members in
group A on the black board.
40, 50, 55, 43, 57
Teacher tells the students in each group
to divide the sum by the number of
students in each group.
Pupil gives the answer
Pupil gives the answer
With the help of the teacher pupil
understand the term middle.
From this pupil understands the
term middle with the help of the
teacher.
Through discussion pupils find the
sum.

Activities
Sum
____________
No. of students
=
245
5
= 49
The teacher give five observations
x1, x2 , x3, x4, x5 and asks to find their
mean
Mean = x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 + x5
5
Now teacher generalize the concept of
mean as
Sum of observations
Mean =
No. of observations
Teacher briefly describes the concept
of middle and mean and then
concludes the topic.
Now teacher shows a chart containing
the equations of middle and mean.
Teacher tells the pupil to find out more
problems regarding middle and mean.
Teacher asks the pupil to do more
problems.
All pupils gives the answer
All pupils find out the answers
correctly.
