Role of Teachers in Building Youth Power: Comparision of China and India
1. Introduction
In last few decades we have seen economy of China growing at a fast pace.
Whenever we talk about growth story of India, we always compare ourselves with what
is happening in China. Chinese development story remains role model for everyone who
has visited China and seen the awakening of sleeping dragon.
Why in first place we should compare ourselves with China? Historically, there
are number of similarities between the two: ancient civilizations, the world's leading and
richest at one time.
• India and China dominated global trade for centuries.
• Both countries lost its past glory and became poor and populace countries.
• Today both are amongst the fastest developing economy.
• Both countries are destined to dominate future world market.
It is very important to understand status of Indian Economy as compare to
Chinese.

Facts and figures shows India needs to do lot to catch up with China in every field
of economic activity. A country cannot progress unless large section of its population
participates in economic activity. You need well trained, motivated & creative human
resource for economic development of country. China has managed its human resource
very well and converted so called “Liability” in to “Asset”.
I talked to many people who visited China in recent years. Apart from world class
infrastructure you will find young boys and girls working everywhere. Be it industry,
Pursuing excellence in rotational moulding.

hotels, malls, tourism, hospitals you will find most of the jobs are being done by young
Chinese in their teens. In contrast we find large scale un-employment among Indian
Youth. Not only we have problem of un-employment we also have problem of
employability. Most of the young generation coming out of schools and colleges are not
ready for participating in vibrant economy. Percentage of children ending up with
graduation is less than 8%.
Why Indians are not becoming economic horse power at young age. Why we are
not successful in harnessing this young blood for pushing wheels of economy. Today we
have world’s largest young population.
55% of Indians [590 million people] are below 30 years of age and
70% of Indians [750 million people] are below 35 years of age!
If we don’t make them Productive before age of 20 year, we lose the best period
of their productive working age.
2. Making Young Generation Responsible at Right Age
Key to success of China lies in participation of young population in economy. Many
factor plays important role in this process, following are most important of them.
• Role of Parent.
• Role of Teachers.
• Role of Industry.
• Role of Society.
• Role of Government.
We have to build society with echo system conducive to quick empowerment of
young generation with economic power and responsibility. Parents, teachers, captains of
Industries, society as whole and government are collectively responsible for creating this
healthy competitive environment.
Today we will dwell on role of Teacher.
One of the most important roles is played by Teacher. Teachers are not just there to
teach subjects like “physics”, “chemistry” and “math”. A good teacher is also a great
mentor. He understands the hidden potential in each of his students. He activates and
ignites creative thinking and makes them responsible enough to face realities of life.
Teacher should help and guide student to fix up his goal in life. Most of the young
generation lacks motivation to learn just because they do not have achievable goals in
their life. Half the work of teacher is done if he is successful in planting a goal in mind of
Pursuing excellence in rotational moulding.

his student. He should then guide students to identify and clarify knowledge and skill
needed for achieving goal.
Teacher has to be very good motivator. His motivation is most effective and he leads
students on path of achieving his goal by purposeful learning.
Teacher should have understanding of individual ability of students. He should talk
about role models and challenge abilities of students at regular interval.
Teachers should help students to apply knowledge they have acquired to solve day to
day problems and real life practical situations.
Purposeful learning environment, so created will boost confidence of student and
make them self-reliant in their working life. Teacher plays very vital role in igniting self
confidence in his students.
Discipline is primary requirement to fast development of any society & country. Well
disciplined young work force is visible everywhere in China. Credit defiantly goes to
teachers. Seeds of disciplined working culture should be implanted by teacher during
tender age of students.
We need to groom team working culture. Team member is as important as team
leader. Culture and habit of working in team should be cultivated during learning. You
cannot build a great country without thousands and thousands of teams working
harmonically in every sector of economy. We must recognize role of teacher here too.
Historically India was in forefront of education, we had great universities, great
teachers. Today many sectors are shining only because of participation of young
generation. Success of software industry is fit example of growth of this sector. IT
revolution has shown that we can do wonders if we harness hidden energy in youth of
India.
I attribute growth of China not to its political system but to its capability to harness
youth power and teachers have played a big role in this process.
We must recognize power of a teacher and ecosystem he can create.
