HIV-AIDS
•It is a spectrum of conditions caused by infection with the HIV(Human
immunodeficiency virus).
•According to an estimation, in 2014, 36.9 people were living with HIV
and 1.2million people died due to AIDS.
•According to an estimation, most of the people suffering from AIDS
are of Sub Saharan Africa.
•1st
December is celebrated as World AIDS day.
Sign and symptoms:
Main symptoms of AIDS:
HIV
Transmission
• Sexual:
• The most frequent mode of transmission of HIV is through sexual contact
with infected person. The majority of transmission of HIV occur through
sexual contact.
• Body fluid:
• The second most frequent way of transmission is by blood tranfussion.
• From mother to child:
• HIV can be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery, or
through breast milk of mother resulting in infection in baby.
AIDS
Prevention:
Sexual contact:
Use of condom reduces 80% of sexual transmission disease(STD)
Pre-exposure:
• Antiretroviral treatment among people with HIV whose CD4 count ≤ 550 cells/µL is a very
effective way to prevent HIV infection of their partner (a strategy known as treatment as
prevention, or TASP).TASP is associated with a 10 to 20 fold reduction in transmission risk.
•Post-exposure:
•A course of anti retro viral administered within 48 to 72 hours after exposure to HIV-positive
blood. The use of the single agent zidovudine reduces the risk of a HIV infection five-fold following a
needle-stick injury.
•Mother to child:
•It involves giving antiviral to mother during pregnancy and bottle feeding to baby after birth.
