The document summarizes information about endangered species and the steps governments of four countries - India, USA, UAE, and Ukraine - are taking to protect endangered animals. It discusses endangered animals in each country, including the Bengal tiger in India, monarch butterfly in USA, Arabian leopard in UAE, and Alpine shrew in Ukraine. It then outlines some of the key measures taken by the governments, such as establishing reserves, enacting wildlife protection laws, providing financial assistance for conservation, and participating in international agreements like CITES.
4. ‘Bengal Tiger ’ tHE ENDANGERED
ANIMAL OF INDIA
• Scientific Name: Panthera tigris
tigris
• Habitat: Indian Sub continent
• Cause of being endangered:
Poaching , loss and fragmentation
of habitat.
• Effect on environment: the
population of the deer, wild pig,
antelope, and gaur will rise
dramatically, co extinction of the
species.
• Solution : 1973 , project tiger was
launched, wild life protection act
was launched, setting up of tiger
reserves .
5. ‘MONARCH BUTTERFLY’ The
endangered animal of USA
• Scientific Name: Danaus
plexippus
• Habitat: North Western And
Eastern America
• Cause of being endangered:
herbicides used by farmers and
homeowners on milkweed, the
loss of breeding habitat, loss
during migration, predator, climate
change, parasite.
• Effect on Environment: reduce in
the population of milkweed as it is
the pollinator .
• Solution: Sanctuaries and
reserves have been made in USA
and California . Monarch
Butterflies In , Fire Island National
Seashore, Great Smoky
Mountains National Park,
Cuyahoga Valley National Park
And Zion National Park.
6. ‘ARABIAN LEOPARD’ The endangered
animal of UAE
• Scientific Name: Panthera pardus
nimr
• Habitat: Coasts of the Red sea and
Arabian sea . The animal lives in
mountains uplands and hilly stepps.
• Cause of their being endangered:
The Arabian leopard is threatened by
habitat loss, degradation and
fragmentation; prey depletion caused
by unregulated hunting; trapping for
the illegal wildlife trade and
retaliatory killing in defense of
livestock.
• Effect: Disturbing the ecological
balance
• Solution: Listed in CITES appendix I
(1)
7. ‘ALPINE SHREW’ The endangered
animal of Ukraine
• Scientific Name- Sorex alpinus
• Habitat- Habitat-The animal lives
in the Alphine meadows and
coniferous forests of mountain
ranges
• Cause- Habitat loss as hydro-
electric schemes and increased
tourism impact its environment
• Effect- It will effect in population
of the other species on which they
depend.
• Solution- listed on Appendix III of
the Bern Convention, which aims
to protect wild European flora and
fauna and their natural habitats,
Carpathians Reserve and National
Park
9. Steps taken by the Government of
India
• CITES is an international agreement between governments. Its aim is
to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and
plants does not threaten their survival.
• Formation of reserve areas like National Parks, Sanctuaries, Biosphere
Reserves.
• All the states, excluding Jammu and Kashmir (it has its own Act),
adopted Wildlife (Protection) Act in 1972 which prohibits any type of
trade for endangered and rare species.
•
• The Central Government provides every type of financial assistance
to the State Governments for the conservation and protection of the
endangered species.
•
10. • National ban was imposed on tiger hunting in 1970 and Wildlife
Protection Act became effective in 1972. According to the latest tiger
census (2015), there is an overall increase of 30% in tiger population.
In 2010, there were 1700 tigers left in India according to tiger census
which has gone up to 2226 tigers in 2015.
• In 1992, Central Zoo Authority (CZA) was initiated for the
supervision of the management of zoological parks in the country.
• In 1996, the Wildlife Advisory Committee and Wildlife Institute were
established for seeking advice on different features of Wildlife
conservation and matters related to it.
• India is part of five main International Conventions which are
associated to wildlife conservation. They are (i) Convention on
International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), (ii) Coalition
Against Wildlife Trafficking (CAWT), (iii) International Whaling
Commission (IWC), (iv) United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization – World Heritage Committee (UNESCO –
WHC) and (v) the Convention on Migratory Species (CHS).
11. Steps taken by the Government of USA
• In 1973, Congress showed global leadership by creating the
Endangered Species Act.
• The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act.
• Each state’s fish and wildlife agency is responsible for
collaboratively developing a State Wildlife Action Plan, which
identifies imperiled species in the state and identifies specific
actions that would assist with their protection and recovery.
• A Bold Vision for Funding Wildlife Conservation.
• Protected areas
12. Steps taken by the Government of UAE
• Formation of reserve areas
• The MBZ Fund provides its grants without discrimination or
bias, based on geographical location or species.
• Environment Conservation Policies
• The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE)
announced the completion of the first phase of the UAE
National Red List Project.
• National Biodiversity Strategy 2021.
• Member of Convention on International Trade in Endangered
Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)
13. Steps taken by the Government of Ukraine
• National parks and biosphere reserves.
• In 1979, the Bern Convention was adopted to facilitate
international cooperation on the conservation of wild flora and
fauna and their natural habitat.
• To facilitate its implementation, a special instrument to protect
the environment – the Emerald Network of Areas of Special
Conservation Interest – was created in 1989.
14. Ways to save animals from
being endangered ?
• Do not increase the pollution on the road or near the forest.
• Always avoid to create a high noise around the forest
• Do not create a born fire in side the forest.
• Stop the hunting inside the forest which sell body parts in the
market.
• Stop deforestation around forests.
• “PLANT MORE TREES AND PLANTS , STAY HAPPY AND
ALLOW ANIMALS TO STAY ALSO HAPPY”.
DO NOT HUNT
ANIMAL
15. Why would we want to preserve biodiversity ?
• Genes: Wild animals and
plants are sources of genes for
hybridization and genetic
engineering.
• Biological control agents:
Some species of living things
help us control invasive
species without the use of
poisons.
• Food sources: Animals,
plants, mushrooms, etc.
• Natural products: Many of
the medicines, fertilizers, and
pesticides we use are derived
from plants and animals. We
also get products such as oils,
adhesives, and silk from
natural sources.
• Environmental services: We
rely on plants and animals for
important processes such as
soil aeration, fertilization, and
pollination.
16. Why would we want to preserve biodiversity
anyway?
Enjoyment: Biodiversity is
often the subject of aesthetic
interest.
Scientific interest: The
diversity of plants and animals
inspires scientific inquiry in
many different realms.
Evolutionary science, anatomy,
physiology, behaviour, and
ecology are only a few
examples.
Self-perpetuation: Biologically
diverse ecosystems help to
preserve their component
species, reducing the need for
future conservation efforts
targeting endangered species.
Future potential for even more
uses: With new discoveries to
come, there will be many more
practical reasons to appreciate
biodiversity!
