True Definition (An Analysis of what it Means to be American) Is there truly a meaning to the word
"American"? What hidden power resides deep within the word? To find the answers, we must look
at the foundations that America was built upon. Simply being American continues the legacy upon
which the morals that America was created by. The true definition of what it takes to be American is
to continue living the legacies passed down by our founding fathers; and lead the lives of truly great
men by ensuring the survival of reinvention, innovation, and leadership. First off, America was built
on the foundations of reinvention and freedom, principles which we must continue. The first
Americans forsook everything they had, in the hopes of a happier life. Their search was for a life of
freedom, without tyrannical pressure. To reinvent a life so different from what they were forced to

varied in race from Caucasian, African American, and Asian. There were relationship problems,
mostly with their parents. Data also revealed that the individuals showed progression towards
suicidal behavior. This source is full of factual information regarding suicide without bias. Therefore
it was very useful in my research. I found the source on EBSCO by searching teen suicide in the

tendencies. Moreover it debunks the myths surrounding suicide such as they must be weak or just
want attention. In almost every case the individual had one or more mental illness that went

discussed pro and cons to college screenings. Suicide prevention movement and warning signs of
suicide that everyone should be aware of. Bias isn't an issue in this source either however just as the
other sources there are example of real teens who took their lives and the information that was

influential. One such individual is Jackie Robinson. Robinson redefined racial stereotypes by
becoming the first African American baseball player to play in the Major League. Through his

the rest. Those reasons being that he fought for what he believed was right, overcame adversity,

Suicide is a "death caused by self– directed injurious behavior with an intent to die as a result of the
behavior" (Violence Prevention, 2017). Suicide is often varied by different cultures, other people
religions, people ethnic norms, and other issues that relate under suicide. Suicide has a downfall in
many aspects. Many people in society, see suicide if it was an attempt to be a crime. Suicide is equal
to homicide. More people die of today as a suicide attempt, than a homicide. Self– mutation is
relative of suicidal behavior. Self– mutation is "deliberately hurting oneself without meaning to
cause one's own death" (Dryden–Edwards, 2017). Many examples of self– mutation, relative to
suicide, can be cutting parts of the human belongings. Societies say usually cutting part of the wrist
is well known. Suicide is also known as self– tattooing. Self– tattooing shows examples of "self–
burning, head banging, pinching, and scratching." (Dryden–Edwards, 2017). Suicide is due to an
effect and action that deal with other situations beside the definition. According to studies, Suicide is
an effect due to risk factors are "characteristics or conditions that increase the chance that a person
may try to take their" (AFSP, 2017). Risk Factors consumes in suicide, by many ages, ethnic groups,
and gender differences. Many people die from age 10–34 in suicide. Out of those ages, men end
their life just about four times the speed of women. Risk factors can also be "associated with a
complex array of factors that interact with each other and place individuals at risk" (American

Health factors, Environmental Factors, and Historical Factors develop in Risk Factors. Health
Factors deal with your "mental health conditions" (ASFP, 2017). Depression, Anxiety Disorder, and
Schizophrenia are examples that compound in mental health illness. Substance abuse disorder, and

In the twenty–four hours following the election, a surge in calls to suicide hotlines primarily from
those belonging to the LGBTQ community. Trumps victory had caused thousands to suddenly fear
their own futures in this country and questioned which of their rights they were going to lose in the
next four years. This lead to many calling suicide hotlines for confirmation that life was worth
living for and that their was always hope. Crisis lines dedicated to the LGBTQ community were
specifically the ones that were most effected. The numbers of calls they were receiving were in the
thousands, over doubling the average number of calls received and reaching unprecedented levels.
An additional concern is that this may be causing a sudden influx trans–suicides, potentially up to
ten. However, none of these cases have as of yet been confirmed, so there is a possibility that no

precarious state in this country and the election seems likely to remove their rights in the upcoming

and you realize that what you thought you knew, you didn 't know at all. After the suicide of my best

The World", Nadya Labi creates a strong ethos as she writes a nonfiction article about an online
predator who preyed on people going on suicide chat sites. In the article Nadya writes about how a
man named William Melchert–Dinkel under the online pseudonym Li Dao would go on suicide chat
rooms and do his best to convince people to go through with their suicidal thoughts and hang
themselves, and Celia Blay, with the help of another woman Kat Lowe, do what they can to hunt
him down. In doing this she creates a nonfiction piece the manifests itself as typical hero and rival
story, a story in which the hero, protagonist, or good–doer attempts to stop the villain, rival,
antagonist or wrong doer from whatever harm they with to inflict. Even more specifically, Labi
piece can be read as a detective story, in which the hero goes through trials and research in order to

amount of pathos through his word choice for the beginning paragraphs of the article. Pate refers to

in a slick ad campaign" (par. 2). By using the words "hogwash" and "slick ad campaign", Pate is
able to turn the reader against gun control advocacy because he makes it seem as if gun control
advocates are trying to sell the American public on an idea that is worthless. Pate also personally
attacks Andrew McKelvey who is funding this ad campaign by saying McKelvey is "in a personal

that Kenzo made. When the village found out kenzo had died they closed off his shop and covered
his body. There was a ceremony held in his honor to remember him as the great man he was. Kenzo

Over the last few generations, the cultural image associated with smoking has dramatically changed.
In comparison with the youth of our grandparents, the novelty, rebellion, and the social normality
linked to smoking has significantly depleted. The past decade has altered that perception further and
changed the idolization of smoking into a more stigmatized and negative view. Such attitude change
has been a process and can be attributed to the utilization of many anti–smoking programs. The first
large–scale national anti–smoking program was implemented as a part of the Fairness Doctrine,
from 1967 to 1970 (Farrelly et al. 2005). During this time, television networks were required to
maintain a balance between anti–smoking and pro–smoking advertisements. Since then, many other
campaigns have taken on the challenge of combatting anti–smoking with the tobacco industry's
promotion. The "truth" campaign, specifically, imposed an early and effective model for anti–
smoking programs to follow, therefore making it highly successful.
