Youth Court Case Study
The youth court was given new sentencing and powers by the CDA 1998 Youth Justice and Criminal
Evidence Act 1999 were also established out of the notion that young people between the ages of 10
to 17 were inclusively dealt with by the courts (Solomon, 2007 cited). Whereby only trained
magistrates and parent and guardian legal presentation and genius media interest are involved, this
established with the acknowledgment that the identity of the young person cannot be identity
reference. Accordingly the Criminal Evidence Act 1999 was to efficiently manage the outcome
young offender whereby the individual could be tried in the court unless they are charged with
homicide, murder or manslaughter. The focus on crime prevention and intervention, and supervision
was also established out of this motivation for competence (Smith, 2013). Hence young people
under the age of 17 who are charge and not released in bail will usually have restriction including
remanding in custody and curfew. In addition the courts had greater power whereby a remand can be
held by the local authority. In cases where young female between the ages of 12 to 16 and males 12
to 14 have committed violent or sexual offences (Blakemore, and ... Show more content on

A Discussion of the Usefulness of Official Crime...
Although ‘official' statistics should provide an accurate representation of crime, criminologists and
sociologists are keen to emphasize that they should be seen in a critical mindset. This essay is
focused on determining just to what extent official statistics provide an accurate representation of
the extent of crime through examining different arguments concerning their limitations and benefits.
This essay also focuses on other types of crime data such as the victim survey and qualitative data,
to see whether they provide a more truthful portrayal of crime.
The first half of the essay analyses the usefulness of official statistics. Here a main theme is the
socially constructed nature of crime and crime statistics, and the consequences ... Show more

The fluid, evolving nature of the legal system and police policies means that depending on the time
scale under analysis, the use of official crime statistics can be a very inaccurate method of analyzing
crime trends.
A core criticism of official statistics is that they are socially constructed. A central representation of
how official statistics are socially constructed is the fact that ‘no act can be considered a crime,
irrespective of how immoral or damaging it may be, unless it has been made such by state
legalisation' (Michael and Adler, cited in Muncie, 1999: 37). Therefore, an argument can follow that
official criminal statistics represent only legally criminal acts, and so miss other more serious
‘social harms' and acts of deviancy and ‘wrongdoing', such as corporate fraud, swindling,
domestic violence, abuse and harassment, and violations of human rights committed by the state
(Muncie, 1999). This means that official crime statistics paint an unrealistic picture of the extent of
acts that are resulting in what I see as the more socially useful expressions of ‘social harm' or
‘social injury'. Also, because such deviant behaviours are not classified as criminal and so there
occurrence is not documented in official crime statistics and targets of concern for the government
and media, people may feel less guilty about carrying out such acts.
A line of thought that follows from this is that put forward by the radical perspective (Coleman

Social Justice Vs. The Gospel Of Jesus
In the society that people live in today is full of violence and destruction from human being and
even by the weather that occurs from state to country. When one holds unto their faith in God, and
trust that he will pull his people from in–justice to justice and make them true believers. In this
essay, as Christians we will be faced with social justice, and how it is compatible with the Gospel of
Jesus, how ministries are trying to change the world with more social justice and how it can be
compared to the Gospel, how social justice could be the key component of the message of Jesus
Christ, and in this essay one will see how social justice is effecting other parts of the world, and how
speaking the word of God can be sustainable in other parts of the world.

For example, in this day in time, police killings in the African American cultures are on the rise. In
these cases, majority of these killings black men are unarmed and are in the police officers are still
able to keep their jobs with no jail time. Social justice also means that there should be justice for the
innocent lives that was taken by the hands of police officers from jobs being taken away or even
prison time. In one's own opinion or thought the sentence time for police killings should be the same
time for innocent lives that was taken by the hands of the police officers. For example, in the state of
Indiana a person that kills a police officer is automatic a life sentence or even death. Whereas an
officer who kills an innocent by law citizen as mentioned earlier walks away as an innocent man or
woman. Clergyman everywhere are trying to address poverty, housing, racial profiling, and social

Youth Offending Essay
Pitts (2005) argued that not enough thought have been undertaken by the New Labour, Pitts (2005)
suggested that the Youth Justice strategy were a part of the Tories agenda, which the new labour
government had reintroduce. However, the problem of the youth crime was contextualised,
suggesting that New Labour made capital from the Conservative government's failure to control
wayward young people, perceived to be acting on the respectable fears of the British society (Pitts,
2005) The New Labour then commissioned to achieve better, tougher and faster in bringing young
people who offend through the justice systems (Home Office, 1997 cited in Solomon, (2007).
The Labour government had claimed to radically the culture of excuse in which young people
offending was supposedly excused rather than condemned (Barry 2004). However the Home Office
2001 (cited Home of Commons, 2011) report shows that the number of juveniles caution or
convicted for offence was substantially lower compared the Tories years. This was regarded as
successful due to the number of young people in custody fell by 14% between 2005 and April 2010.

The Core Function of Police in Reference to Wilson and Keeling's Broken Windows Thesis
In considering whether the core function of the Police should be to maintain order, there are a
number of issues, both historic and current, which need to be taken into consideration. For example,
the maintenance of what constitutes "order" can be interpreted differently by different communities
i.e. urban and rural. The expectations of police performance and in how they deploy their resources
to meet conflicting demands need to satisfy both nationally set targets and meet locally driven
priorities. These demands also impacts on the police as they are expected to adopt a more
managerialistic approach to policing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
[and] .."the preservation of public tranquillity" This type of policing was considered essential to
protect law–abiding citizens from the disorderly underclass such the poor, beggars, drunks and the
homeless predominantly in urban areas. It was also felt that it would also provide the opportunity to
detect crime if certain areas were targeted. As the police service was rolled out across other
metropolitan areas, similar styles of policing were introduced although not with out some
contention. The prioritisation of crime prevention and maintenance of order, was contested,
particularly after a moral panic in 1862 when MP Hugh Pilkington was robbed (Muncie and
McLaughlin 2002, the problem of crime p.145) this raised many concerns about the police in that
their main style of policing was not deemed to be effective. Hence by the late nineteenth century the
detection of crime was considered more important that crime prevention.
What this demonstrated was that there was disagreement about the police's primary functions right
from the inception of the police force, which to some extent still continues in contempory society.
Today, to put policing in context of wider social control strategies, the UK Government view is that
crime is an inevitable small part of normal behaviour in society and that everyone has a part to play
to maintain order and

Cesare Beccaria, An Italian Scholar Born
Cesare Beccaria was an Italian scholar born in Milan, Italy in 1738 where he graduated in law at the
University of Pavia in 1758 (Monachesi 1956, p. 440). His major contribution led to a revolution in
thinking by introducing the idea of proportionality between crime and punishment. To make
punishment more legitimate, he argued that the punishment given to the criminal should match the
crime to deter criminals rather than using punishment that sought revenge (McLaughlin & Muncie
2013, p. 6). Proportionate punishment meant that the punishment should fit the crime and could be
explained in a logical and ethical manner. In Medieval periods prior to Beccaria, punishments were
disproportionate, arbitrary, random and did not fit a crime but served only to deliver justice
(McLaughlin & Muncie 2013, pp. 5–6). They were based on superstition, prejudice, and religious
beliefs rather than law (McLaughlin & Muncie 2013, p xix). For example, women were burnt when
suspected of being a witch in villages in Britain (Christian 2011, p. 13). Nevertheless, it did not cure
crime as the focus was typically on justifying the proportion between the crime and the punishment
rather than focusing on the criminals (McLaughlin & Muncie 2013, p.1). There are many factors
that contribute to why crimes occur, such as social disadvantage and economic poverty, opportunity,
etcetera. Overall, Beccaria's major contribution was making punishment more rational and
appropriate, highlighting the significance of

My Mentor Experience Analysis
Throughout my high school years, and the past year especially, I feel that I've grown and matured
while developing my skills in multiple areas. Through participation in community service events
and employment, the experiences I've gained have caused me to want to continue expanding my
knowledge in a university setting. My high school years have strengthened many of my skills due to
my participation in extra–curricular activities. Out of the activities I've had the opportunity to be
apart of, my proudest involvement has been my school's Peer Mentoring program. Being a peer

Crime Is a Social Construct
Crime is a social construct Discuss. This composition will look at crime and its different
criminological interpretations. Crime is an umbrella word which covers a diverse range of issues
and is dependant upon the theoretical stand point of the writer. Although the wordings of the
explanations differ, the implications are consistent (Newburn, 2007. Doherty, 2005). Mclaughlin et
al (2006) seems the most relevant for the purpose. They separate crime into three key constituent
parts. These are harm, social agreement and the official societal reaction. There are different
theoretical interpretations of crime. The product of culturally–bounded social interaction is crime;
which is the violation of the social contract (Newburn, 2007. Young, ... Show more content on

The classicist classification of crime is activities which have a negative impact upon the individuals
and upon their property of the state's electorate. Classicists do not take into account that there might
be other factions with conflicting aims or moral codes. This can be perceived prior to the break up of
the former Yugoslavia, where each faction had separate societal views. The conservative view of
crime is that anything that threatens the social order should be criminal. This follows the classicist
view insofar as that but they also include crimes which damage the integrity and morals of society.
Those dealing with new deviance theory assert that there needs to be two separate parties. One party
behaves or commits certain actions that another party who has differing morality categorizes that
party as deviant. The factions in society with greater power impose their moral codes (Young, 1995).
With new deviance theory the faction with the most power controls the morals; this doesn't
necessarily translate to being the majority of society. The Marxist viewpoint on crime is from of
class and the intensification of social control of society. This viewpoint perceives capitalist societies
as being breeding grounds for criminal activities. Theorists believe that only socialist societies can
have any expectation of being without crime. Sheptycki (2006) states that "the roots of

New Labour Youth Justice Case Study
New Labour youth justice policy and practice over the past decades have been deep–rooted in an
ideological framework. That incorporates criminological theoretical both neo–liberal approaches in
regarding young people who commit offences, that has become responsibility for the management
of risk, and less tolerant of indiscipline more overtly in society (Muncie, 2008). Likewise neo–
conservative ideologies that involves of left realisation of policy and reintegrative shaming.
Whereby the offending activities of the individual are shamed with the punishment that suit the
crime, however at the same time take in consideration the circumstances whereby the individual
commit the offence (Hopkins Burke, 2008). Increasingly, in United Kingdom there have been a
culture of fear which surrounding the youths in society influences in part by cases such as the
murder of two year old James Bulger committed by ten year olds Robert Thompson and Jon
Venables in 1992 as the contributing factors (Pitts,2001).
The manifestation of such fear is highlighted by youth involvement in youth culture of criminal

Toronto Anti Violence Intervention Strategy
Developed and implemented in early 2006, Toronto Anti–Violence Intervention Strategy (TAVIS) is
a targeted approach to policing that incorporates increased surveillance along with increased patrols
in lower income neighborhoods (Siciliano, 2010). This policy is the product of a constellation of
factors that includes a key triggering shootout among two rival youth gangs on Boxing Day, 2005,
which resulted in the death of innocent bystander Jane Creba.
I. Identification of the problem
The Toronto Anti–Violence Intervention Strategy (TAVIS) addresses the problem of criminal street
gangs and illegal guns in Toronto. TAVIS aims to reduce gang activity and gun violence in Toronto
through targeted policing in some of the 13 priority neighborhoods where crime analysis indicates
chronic or an acute escalation in violence (Siciliano, 2010). As an intervention strategy, TAVIS
operates on the principle of geographic–specific, intelligence–led policing intelligent–based policing
that targets known gang associates engaged in guns and drug activities who are on the verge of
committing an offence.
According to the Toronto police, an Anti–Violence Intervention Strategy was a necessary investment
in wake of increasing gun violence among poor (primarily black) youth in the city of Toronto, which
peaked to its ultimate high in the year 2005 known as the 'year of the gun'. A media spectacle of the

An Outsider In Ball State University's Parade
What's it like to be an outsider in society? Ball State University's production of Parade presents Leo
Frank, the protagonist and the one depicted as a foreigner. No matter what stage of life a person is
in, being cast as an outsider is a common feeling, whether it's going to a new school, meeting new
people, or simply moving 873 miles (Brooklyn, NY to Atlanta, GA) away from home. However,
others believe that being on the outside is a blessing in disguise – providing the user with vigilance
and a better understanding on those around them. Regardless of that matter, everyone knows what
it's like to be the newcomer to any particular group or setting. Ball State's management of Parade
captures the portrayal of what it's like to feel alienated in a town you cannot call home. Parade's
persistent theme that "a person shouldn't be judged due to their character/background" is best

processing center shipping costs, meaning origin to hubs, and the customer shipping costs, meaning
from hubs to the final customer. Therefore, the cost to ship rail cars of grain from the origins and
hubs will determine the proper distribution of rail cars from origin to destination. Solution Our

Juvenile Delinquency : The Basis Of Public Fear
This essay will look at the way in which juvenile delinquency came into existence and became the
basis of public fear. It will look at the way the concept of 'childhood' was developed and the way in
which laws brought juvenile delinquency in to the media's concern. In order to understand the way
in which juvenile delinquency was legislated we need to understand the basis of juvenile
delinquency which starts from the process of 'childhood'. This concept of childhood was not in
existence before the 17th century, there was also no concept of youth and adulthood, and therefore
there was no social problem of 'youth's'. The perception that there was no concept of childhood was

At this period, children were being exploited through tough child labour. The children were treated
as miniature adults, they played a crucial role within the industrialization. However, there was no
clear boundary between adulthood and childhood, in the pre–industrial period societies children
worked together with adults in everyday life, they did not live in an isolated world or behave in a
different way and were not treated to different understanding of morality. (Muncie, 2009, p.48).The
way children lived in this era was no different in the way that adult life was lived, they were
involved in drinking alcohol, physical – intensive working, gambling. In which today's postmodern
society would define as unsuitable and illegal way of living for children, In order to maintain their
'innocence' and morality' (Empey, 1982, p.33). Late 18th century the concept of childhood was
viewed as the loss of innocence and the attainment of adult abilities for evil actions and behaviour,
therefore there was a need to protect the innocence of children. Hendricks identified this as the
'Romantic Child'. Furthermore, there was a development of welfare approach and child welfare
reform, which felt the need to protect children against the immorality of the world. The 1833

Walking into E.O. Muncie ten years ago was my first day of fifth grade. My heart was pounding

Criminal Activity And Its Control
Within the first section of this essay it will explore the ways in which contemporary criminology
such as realist and critical challenge popular representations, commonsensical images and
explanations of crime and its control.
Contemporary criminology uses scientific methodology, creating research data that looks at the
larger issue of crime, being the social construct of ever altering societies and cultures. Contemporary
criminology contains a wide range of theoretical approaches from which all take stands against the
older theories like Lombroso's classic theory 'Born criminals'. As a result criminologists recognises
that what is perceived as criminal activity and crime is constantly altering.
"Radical criminology came about in the late 1960's and originates from a group of sociologists and
activists which all shared the same two views: a dissatisfaction with 'traditional' or mainstream
criminology, and the fact that they were largely influenced by the labelling perspective" (Coleman
and Norris, 2000, p.73.) it is from this group that radical criminology was 'born'. Radical
criminology is a textbook example of ever changing criminological theories which indeed
challenges popular representations of crime like the media. Radical criminological theories do not
conform to a single definition; it originates from a few different criminological theories such as
Marxism and feminism. Mclaughlin and Muncie states that "Within the broad classification of

piqued my interest the font foundry was Lost Type Co–Op. They caught my eye because they have
produced some really great vintage and retro style fonts. I also chose this font foundry because they
have an unusual font buying system where they leave their visitors with the choice to pay what they
can afford for the fonts on the site. They left it this way expecting people to have a moral code and
to pay what they felt the font was deserving; as well as giving designers with little means the ability
to purchase fonts to use in their designs. After doing a little digging through more searches I found
the history of how the Lost Type Co–Op was founded. It originally started off as a bet between the
co–founders Riley Cran and Tyler Galpin after finding a 1940's Ball glass jar poster both designers
were enamored with the secondary font promoting the glass jars. Cran bet Galpin that he could
produce a full alphabet of the font face in 24 hours; Galpin said if he could he would make a website
for the font. 24 hours and some collaboration later the Font Muncie was completed. They offered
Muncie up to the design community as a completely free typeface. After some thought they decided
to try to make it a go as a font service; and started to call other design friends who were turning
towards creating fonts for their design work. After a few months they had a selection of thirty

Stereotypes Of Immorality, Action Thriller
AMBITIONS OF IMMORTALITY is an original sci–fi, action thriller. The plot explores man's need
for immortality. The script also explores the theme of machine vs. man, as well as man's need to
survive. The moral question of how far man should take technology and play the role of God is also
examined. These are solid themes.
With that said, the script would benefit from more development. The opening sets the tone for a sci–
fi thriller; however, the opening needs to be more visual to engage the audience. There's a tendency
to tell the story vs. visually show the action of the characters. For example in the opening, it's not
clear what type of animal the doctor is experimenting with. It's not visual enough to understand how
the animal is different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While the dialogue reveals some information about the characters, the dialogue also tends to sound
on the nose and un–natural.
Avoid repetitive dialogue. There are many scenes in which Sweet repeats his goal for immortality.
Overall, the script is heavily dominated by dialogue. Some scenes feel too long, such as the birthday
sequence.
The overall tension will be intensified if there's a stronger foe. Consider creating some form of a
ticking clock tension or urgency to the plot. Stronger tension and suspense needs to drive the entire
plot. Elevate the tone to fit with a thriller.
The professional presentation can be polished. As mentioned, there's a strong tendency to tell and
explain the story vs. showing it. This occurs throughout the entire script. Instead of saying that
Sweet's love towards Casper is established: show it visually. When he tries to take off his metal
plate, but can't, show what being "angered" looks like visually.
There are a few other minor typos and formatting errors. The narrative descriptions should be short
(not full sentences) and visual. For example, at the birthday party Sweet is described several times
as being

Personal Narrative: My Experience At The Indiana Academy
6. In order to meet the new challenges Indiana Academy will undeniably present to me, I will

not push me to study, as I am already successful and therefore do not see the need to study

Whether it 's the cost of your course materials, living expenses, or tuition it all ends up affecting
your performance in school. College can become very pricy, and looking for ways to stay out of
debt can be stressful. However Ball State happens to offer over 500 scholarships for incoming
students, 329 on–campus employers, and every four out of five students receive merit–based
financial aid. In fact a student at Ball State on average only borrows $27,000 in loans compared to
$35,000 an average student in the U.S. may borrow. While ultimately the main goal of a college
university is to recruit more students and increase their current knowledge. Many universities focus
on other aspects such as research development. Ball State happens to encourage students and faculty
to bring forth any research ideas they may have. Two programs called Sponsored Projects
Administration and Ball State Innovation Corporation (BSIC), is meant for finding and funding new
research opportunities, in attempt of educating others. The Rivers of Research is apart of an ongoing
research program that is examining how we as human beings affect watery ecosystems. This
program was developed by Mark Pyron who is a biology professor at Ball State. Mr.Pyron is
focused on discovering the influences humans have on potential public drinking waterways within
America, since a third of the U.S. consumes their water from river banks.

Youth And Crime By John Muncie
Critically discuss the assertion that "young people are propelled into crime through circumstances
beyond their control" (Muncie, 2005, p.116).
In his 2005 book "Youth and Crime", John Muncie stated that "young people are propelled into
crime through circumstances beyond their control". While this may be true in part, there have been
many studies written since which differ significantly. Conversely, there are also studies that are at
least in part, if not wholly in line with his findings.
Whether the motivation is greed or or the result of environmental factors, it is not known as to
whether there is a definitive cause for criminal behaviour. There are myriad causal factors of youth
crime, however Muncie had his mind set on the theory that it was something you were born with,
not something brought on by conditioning or the result of external environmental tormentors.
Muncie based his theory on a study that took place in the early twentieth century. Several attempts
were made by Goring (1913) to determine a certain set of physical characteristics that only criminals
had. According to Goring, his study proved that all criminals were born into delinquency and so
young people could not help but be forced into a life of crime. To arrive at this conclusion, Goring
took over 3,000 male prisoners into various communities around London and then compared them
to various control groups of non prisoners. He then used correlation analysis and found that the
average criminal tended

How Can We Best Define Crime?
How can we best define crime? Discuss.
What is Crime? Many People may have different definitions about crime. Some might say crime is
an act of offense/breaking the law and is punishable by conviction. Others might argue that crime is
an act whereby offenders `might cause harm to the society and should be punished for their actions.
Crime has been a great concern to the society as a whole. Sometimes offenders commit crimes
intentionally to hurt someone they don't like or just to cause harm to their fellow human beings.
Some people might argue that, some crimes might refer to certain acts.
Some People argue that ''criminal behaviour in violation of the criminal law is not a crime unless its
prohibited by the criminal Law'' (Sutherland & Cressey (1924/1970 in John Muncie pp4).The
criminal Law is a set of specific rules that regard human behaviour which has been publicized by the
political power, which applies equally to all the members of the population. No matter how moral,
dangerous or damaging it is to the society it is not a crime unless the authorities, the government
have made it a law. This is quite dangerous because offenders might commit crimes which are not
likely to break the law and might not be classified as crime. This article by Taipan argues that ''only
those who are criminals have been adjudicated as such by the courts'' (Tappan, 1947, in John
Muncie p.100).Some circumstances must be meet an act before it can be classified as crime these

Summary Of Bessie's Decision To Go To Muncie
On Monday the 20th of January, Floyd's wife, Bessie wanted to go to Muncie. She wanted to go
clothes shopping with the money she got from her Christmas. They usually didn't have time to go to
Muncie because they raise their daughter's son. Their daughter was put in jail for attempted murder.
She was going to locked away for a long time. Between driving him to baseball practice and taking
him to his appointments, the couple didn't have much time for themselves. Bessie tried to talk Floyd
into going to Muncie but he wasn't having it. He didn't understand why Bessie wanted to go to

how he needed new shoes for church on Sunday. Bessie went into shoe carnival and bought him a

Treadwell Crime
Treadwell (2013) openly admits that the notion of crime is complicated and contested. However, it is
agreed that criminology is a multidisciplinary subject which is interested in the concept of crime and
its impact and role in society. In its attempts to understand crime it is influenced by theories of
philosophy, psychology and law (amongst others). Treadwell (2013) comes to describe crime as a
malleable and constantly evolving concept however he acknowledges that there are massive
variances in the way that crime is conceptualized (based on geographical differences but also time
periods). Behaviours which previously have been labelled as criminal have been decriminalized
where as certain behaviours which were not criminal previously have now been labelled as criminal.
It is a constantly evolving concept. There are various perspectives of crime, including the ... Show

Crime is defined by Muncie (2006) as behaviour which is proscribed by criminal law, however, he
similarly to Treadwell (2013) acknowledges that this in itself is not enough to depict its full scope.
The perceptions and understandings of what people consider to be criminal are highly variable. The
notion of crime is constantly changing and evolving, and is relative to both the time period but also
the societies geographical location. This was comparably argued by Treadwell (2013) in his analysis
of crime. What is considered to be criminal in one era may not be true of other eras of time. This
understanding also varies between different societies and their geographical differences. There is no
one broad understanding of what is considered criminal and what is not, or where this line should be
drawn. Crime is a continuously contested concept across various spheres of the academic world
(Muncie, 2006). There are legal perspectives but there are also social and political views of crime,

Strategies of Youth Justice Policies
Here we will look at the strategies of youth justice policies and practice with the ideological
motivations and identify and evaluate the social and political context. The 1908 Child Act; Children
and Young Persons Act, the Criminal Justice Act; Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and Anti–Social
Behaviour Act 2003 will be discussed.
Youth justice is a creature of historical development. The structure of the industry is full of
dominant philosophies which have seeped into the foundations, which still monopolise and govern
contemporary practice and although new perspectives have emerged over the recent history, it is
necessary to trace the evolution over the last century to understand the logic behind the practice.

More young people and 'pre–delinquent' children were being drawn into the 'net' of juvenile justice
and Springhall (1986) remarked that the impact of the 1933 Children and Young Persons Act seemed
to direct young people to court, rather than divert, under the assumption that care and treatment
would follow (cited in Muncie, 2009).
The system legitimised by welfare is always likely to come under attack from those seeking more a
punitive and retributive response. Over the 1950s and 1960s local authority care provided
attendance centres for the neglected and detention centres established by the impact of the Criminal
Justice Act 1948, 'retraining' offenders through punitive labour brought confusion concerning the
control and treatment of juveniles.
The Children and Young Persons (Amended) Act 1952 allowing courts to remand offenders to local
authorities and those supervised following release on license from approved schools had effectively
created two strategies in which the system of control (the criminal justice system) and care (welfare
system) became intertwined.
An enlarged welfare state, part of the Labour Party's vision, brought about the highly controversial
1969 Children and Young Persons Act seeking alternatives to detention by care orders, proceedings
and treatment along with advocating a

Should Youth Offenders Be Held Responsible For Their Actions?
How should children in trouble with the law be responded to, by prioritising their welfare or by
prioritising justice? Some may view a child as innocent and incapable of being able to maintain
self–control in certain situations, whether they are unable to understand what they may have done or
whether it is the child who should be held responsible for their actions. Others share a view that
whether someone is a child or not they should be held responsible for their actions. This debate
between welfare and justice could also be looked at with the idea of whether youth offenders should
be looked at as a child first or as an offender first. Over the history of youth justice in England and
wales there has been toing and froing between the idea of welfare and justice and after looking at the
available evidence and information this paper will suggest what may be viewed as the most effective
way of responding to youth offending and troubled children. In the history of youth offending prior
to the nineteenth century youth offenders were treated as adults, sent to adult prisons and in some
cases they were even hanged. Childhood was not, in the eyes of working class parents, employers
and the law, an important chapter in their lives but gradually with regards to criminal behavior and
social and legal control this changed (Burke, 2008 p.48). In the 1830s there was an attempt at
creating a process to accommodate young offenders, for one example Parkhurst, which was the first

Essay On Ball State University
Ball State University is a very reputable school with a lot of well–thought–out policies. Since 1918,
Ball State has maintained a well–organized university, which is impressive when you consider the
large enrollment number. However, one policy that Ball State could improve is the visitation policy.
The current visitation policy is generally one of the biggest criticisms with Ball State, and for good
reason. The current policy does not permit guests over in the dorms past midnight on weeknights.
The reason why the policy is a problem is because it hinders the students' academic experience, as it
would deny study groups from meeting in a dorm past midnight. A feasible solution that Ball State
could employ would be to extend the visitation policy to twenty–four hour visitation, but increase
the consequences if hall rules are broken. This would be a more effective way of teaching
responsibility, as well as allowing students to gain more academic independence.
The main problem with the policy is that not allowing guests after midnight could be detrimental to
study groups that want to work at later times. According to a survey among first–year students at
Ball State, over half of the participants said that they usually have to study past midnight on school
nights (Survey). Due to the frequent group projects that some college students have to do, this policy
is an obstacle that they must work around. If the residence halls would allow overnight visitation on
weeknights, study

Neal Dougherty's Accomplishments
I was so incredibly excited when Neal Dougherty began talking in class on Thursday because I was

one of my passions in life and it is inspiring to hear from people who have been so highly successful

In Neal's artwork and his student's work, most of it is either political commentary or used as a form
of advertising for a company. In Dax's animation creations story telling is exactly what he is trying
to do the entire time, he is trying to bring us into his world and make us understand the story line.
The software they use supports and enhances their ideas because it takes what they have in their
heads originally and allows them to create it in real life. This task that computers are now able to do
is unbelievable. Dax created an entire world with the click of some buttons on his computer. Now
that is not to saw it is any easier than original mediums to create these story lines, however, the
computer sure does allow them to take their ideas to an entirely new level. Neal Dougherty was the
first one to mention using these techniques as a way to channel political commentary in his artwork.
For example, he told us about many of the giffs he created that were then shared all over the Internet
to undermine the authority of some social figures. He also shared about his experience during his art

Meth Is A Normal Piece Of News
Meth has become a normal piece of news in Muncie, Indiana. When someone searches "Muncie,
Indiana problems" the first hit is "Meth Crisis." When people think about starting a family or even
just relocating to another city or town, they search the statistics and news of the various cities. If the
first thing they find out about one city is that it is number one for its large per capita number of meth
labs in Indiana, that's not going to persuade anyone to move there. Without new residents and
current families moving away, the ripple effect becomes a vicious cycle, taking away jobs,
especially the "mom and pop" stores which rely on local customers. Meth also brings in a huge
problem with violence, as any drug would. Reasonable people don't want to be around violence.
They do not want their families injured or even killed because of someone else's problems. In fact,
they don't want their family members even exposed to the issues that meth directly and indirectly
contributes to. According to the Indy Star, "They (those who operate a meth lab) were stripped down
and given those clean suits to wear; that way they don 't contaminate a police car or City Hall or
anywhere they have to go." Having dealt with the chemicals makes one toxic enough to contaminate
everything within its presence, imagine all the people who are not caught but continue to be out in
the town. It could be the grocery store or a restaurant, a hardware store or a public restroom, they

Observation Of Burris Laboratory School In Muncie, Indiana
As an elementary and special education major, I observed a fourth grade class at Burris Laboratory
School in Muncie, Indiana. From my observations, I will be discussing what I witnessed based on
the questions I was asked to observe on. I was able to observe Mrs. Haughn, who was teaching the
students' math at a fifth grade level. We were assigned a time to go and see how the teacher
organized lesson plans, the content during the time period, identify items in the classroom, we
would want in our future classrooms, how students participated, the overall environment of the
classroom, and how the content was being taught. On the first day I observed in the classroom, I
immediately saw that Mrs. Haughn plans in advance. She stays organized by having a scheduled
routine on the board for the students to be aware of the following topic being taught or reviewed.
During the second day I observed, she was planning in advance by reminding the students there was
going to be a test the following day. After informing the students, they reviewed for the test to have
the information fresh in their minds. After the students came in from recess, Mrs. Haughn told them

Youth Court Case Study

  • 1. Youth Court Case Study The youth court was given new sentencing and powers by the CDA 1998 Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999 were also established out of the notion that young people between the ages of 10 to 17 were inclusively dealt with by the courts (Solomon, 2007 cited). Whereby only trained magistrates and parent and guardian legal presentation and genius media interest are involved, this established with the acknowledgment that the identity of the young person cannot be identity reference. Accordingly the Criminal Evidence Act 1999 was to efficiently manage the outcome young offender whereby the individual could be tried in the court unless they are charged with homicide, murder or manslaughter. The focus on crime prevention and intervention, and supervision was also established out of this motivation for competence (Smith, 2013). Hence young people under the age of 17 who are charge and not released in bail will usually have restriction including remanding in custody and curfew. In addition the courts had greater power whereby a remand can be held by the local authority. In cases where young female between the ages of 12 to 16 and males 12 to 14 have committed violent or sexual offences (Blakemore, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. A Discussion of the Usefulness of Official Crime... Although ‘official' statistics should provide an accurate representation of crime, criminologists and sociologists are keen to emphasize that they should be seen in a critical mindset. This essay is focused on determining just to what extent official statistics provide an accurate representation of the extent of crime through examining different arguments concerning their limitations and benefits. This essay also focuses on other types of crime data such as the victim survey and qualitative data, to see whether they provide a more truthful portrayal of crime. The first half of the essay analyses the usefulness of official statistics. Here a main theme is the socially constructed nature of crime and crime statistics, and the consequences ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fluid, evolving nature of the legal system and police policies means that depending on the time scale under analysis, the use of official crime statistics can be a very inaccurate method of analyzing crime trends. A core criticism of official statistics is that they are socially constructed. A central representation of how official statistics are socially constructed is the fact that ‘no act can be considered a crime, irrespective of how immoral or damaging it may be, unless it has been made such by state legalisation' (Michael and Adler, cited in Muncie, 1999: 37). Therefore, an argument can follow that official criminal statistics represent only legally criminal acts, and so miss other more serious ‘social harms' and acts of deviancy and ‘wrongdoing', such as corporate fraud, swindling, domestic violence, abuse and harassment, and violations of human rights committed by the state (Muncie, 1999). This means that official crime statistics paint an unrealistic picture of the extent of acts that are resulting in what I see as the more socially useful expressions of ‘social harm' or ‘social injury'. Also, because such deviant behaviours are not classified as criminal and so there occurrence is not documented in official crime statistics and targets of concern for the government and media, people may feel less guilty about carrying out such acts. A line of thought that follows from this is that put forward by the radical perspective (Coleman ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Social Justice Vs. The Gospel Of Jesus In the society that people live in today is full of violence and destruction from human being and even by the weather that occurs from state to country. When one holds unto their faith in God, and trust that he will pull his people from in–justice to justice and make them true believers. In this essay, as Christians we will be faced with social justice, and how it is compatible with the Gospel of Jesus, how ministries are trying to change the world with more social justice and how it can be compared to the Gospel, how social justice could be the key component of the message of Jesus Christ, and in this essay one will see how social justice is effecting other parts of the world, and how speaking the word of God can be sustainable in other parts of the world. What is Social Justice? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, in this day in time, police killings in the African American cultures are on the rise. In these cases, majority of these killings black men are unarmed and are in the police officers are still able to keep their jobs with no jail time. Social justice also means that there should be justice for the innocent lives that was taken by the hands of police officers from jobs being taken away or even prison time. In one's own opinion or thought the sentence time for police killings should be the same time for innocent lives that was taken by the hands of the police officers. For example, in the state of Indiana a person that kills a police officer is automatic a life sentence or even death. Whereas an officer who kills an innocent by law citizen as mentioned earlier walks away as an innocent man or woman. • 13. Youth Offending Essay Pitts (2005) argued that not enough thought have been undertaken by the New Labour, Pitts (2005) suggested that the Youth Justice strategy were a part of the Tories agenda, which the new labour government had reintroduce. However, the problem of the youth crime was contextualised, suggesting that New Labour made capital from the Conservative government's failure to control wayward young people, perceived to be acting on the respectable fears of the British society (Pitts, 2005) The New Labour then commissioned to achieve better, tougher and faster in bringing young people who offend through the justice systems (Home Office, 1997 cited in Solomon, (2007). The Labour government had claimed to radically the culture of excuse in which young people offending was supposedly excused rather than condemned (Barry 2004). However the Home Office 2001 (cited Home of Commons, 2011) report shows that the number of juveniles caution or convicted for offence was substantially lower compared the Tories years. This was regarded as successful due to the number of young people in custody fell by 14% between 2005 and April 2010. Likewise the number of first–offender also fallen, from ... • 17. The Core Function of Police in Reference to Wilson and... The Core Function of Police in Reference to Wilson and Keeling's Broken Windows Thesis In considering whether the core function of the Police should be to maintain order, there are a number of issues, both historic and current, which need to be taken into consideration. For example, the maintenance of what constitutes "order" can be interpreted differently by different communities i.e. urban and rural. The expectations of police performance and in how they deploy their resources to meet conflicting demands need to satisfy both nationally set targets and meet locally driven priorities. These demands also impacts on the police as they are expected to adopt a more managerialistic approach to policing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... [and] .."the preservation of public tranquillity" This type of policing was considered essential to protect law–abiding citizens from the disorderly underclass such the poor, beggars, drunks and the homeless predominantly in urban areas. It was also felt that it would also provide the opportunity to detect crime if certain areas were targeted. As the police service was rolled out across other metropolitan areas, similar styles of policing were introduced although not with out some contention. The prioritisation of crime prevention and maintenance of order, was contested, particularly after a moral panic in 1862 when MP Hugh Pilkington was robbed (Muncie and McLaughlin 2002, the problem of crime p.145) this raised many concerns about the police in that their main style of policing was not deemed to be effective. Hence by the late nineteenth century the detection of crime was considered more important that crime prevention. What this demonstrated was that there was disagreement about the police's primary functions right from the inception of the police force, which to some extent still continues in contempory society. Today, to put policing in context of wider social control strategies, the UK Government view is that crime is an inevitable small part of normal behaviour in society and that everyone has a part to play to maintain order and ... • 21. Cesare Beccaria, An Italian Scholar Born Cesare Beccaria was an Italian scholar born in Milan, Italy in 1738 where he graduated in law at the University of Pavia in 1758 (Monachesi 1956, p. 440). His major contribution led to a revolution in thinking by introducing the idea of proportionality between crime and punishment. To make punishment more legitimate, he argued that the punishment given to the criminal should match the crime to deter criminals rather than using punishment that sought revenge (McLaughlin & Muncie 2013, p. 6). Proportionate punishment meant that the punishment should fit the crime and could be explained in a logical and ethical manner. In Medieval periods prior to Beccaria, punishments were disproportionate, arbitrary, random and did not fit a crime but served only to deliver justice (McLaughlin & Muncie 2013, pp. 5–6). They were based on superstition, prejudice, and religious beliefs rather than law (McLaughlin & Muncie 2013, p xix). For example, women were burnt when suspected of being a witch in villages in Britain (Christian 2011, p. 13). Nevertheless, it did not cure crime as the focus was typically on justifying the proportion between the crime and the punishment rather than focusing on the criminals (McLaughlin & Muncie 2013, p.1). There are many factors that contribute to why crimes occur, such as social disadvantage and economic poverty, opportunity, etcetera. Overall, Beccaria's major contribution was making punishment more rational and appropriate, highlighting the significance of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Through participation in community service events and employment, the experiences I've gained have caused me to want to continue expanding my knowledge in a university setting. My high school years have strengthened many of my skills due to my participation in extra–curricular activities. Out of the activities I've had the opportunity to be apart of, my proudest involvement has been my school's Peer Mentoring program. One specific activity committee I'm eager to join is the Ball State University Dance Marathon for Riley's Children's Hospital. My younger brother has struggled with Chronic Kidney Disease, so growing up, I've been to Riley's numerous times with my brother. Whether he's getting treatments, tests done, or when he went in to get his transplant, Riley's Hospital has always treated my brother and my family with the greatest amount of benevolence. I feel that by participating in the organization of this event, I would be able to give back to Riley's for what they've done for my family, and so many others. I look forward to joining such a charitable organization at Ball State and hope that I'll be able to lead others in the right direction as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Crime Is a Social Construct Crime is a social construct Discuss. This composition will look at crime and its different criminological interpretations. Crime is an umbrella word which covers a diverse range of issues and is dependant upon the theoretical stand point of the writer. Although the wordings of the explanations differ, the implications are consistent (Newburn, 2007. Doherty, 2005). Mclaughlin et al (2006) seems the most relevant for the purpose. They separate crime into three key constituent parts. These are harm, social agreement and the official societal reaction. There are different theoretical interpretations of crime. The product of culturally–bounded social interaction is crime; which is the violation of the social contract (Newburn, 2007. Young, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The classicist classification of crime is activities which have a negative impact upon the individuals and upon their property of the state's electorate. Classicists do not take into account that there might be other factions with conflicting aims or moral codes. This can be perceived prior to the break up of the former Yugoslavia, where each faction had separate societal views. The conservative view of crime is that anything that threatens the social order should be criminal. This follows the classicist view insofar as that but they also include crimes which damage the integrity and morals of society. Those dealing with new deviance theory assert that there needs to be two separate parties. One party behaves or commits certain actions that another party who has differing morality categorizes that party as deviant. The factions in society with greater power impose their moral codes (Young, 1995). With new deviance theory the faction with the most power controls the morals; this doesn't necessarily translate to being the majority of society. The Marxist viewpoint on crime is from of class and the intensification of social control of society. This viewpoint perceives capitalist societies as being breeding grounds for criminal activities. Theorists believe that only socialist societies can have any expectation of being without crime. Sheptycki (2006) states that "the roots of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That incorporates criminological theoretical both neo–liberal approaches in regarding young people who commit offences, that has become responsibility for the management of risk, and less tolerant of indiscipline more overtly in society (Muncie, 2008). Likewise neo– conservative ideologies that involves of left realisation of policy and reintegrative shaming. Whereby the offending activities of the individual are shamed with the punishment that suit the crime, however at the same time take in consideration the circumstances whereby the individual commit the offence (Hopkins Burke, 2008). Toronto Anti Violence Intervention Strategy Developed and implemented in early 2006, Toronto Anti–Violence Intervention Strategy (TAVIS) is a targeted approach to policing that incorporates increased surveillance along with increased patrols in lower income neighborhoods (Siciliano, 2010). This policy is the product of a constellation of factors that includes a key triggering shootout among two rival youth gangs on Boxing Day, 2005, which resulted in the death of innocent bystander Jane Creba. I. Identification of the problem The Toronto Anti–Violence Intervention Strategy (TAVIS) addresses the problem of criminal street gangs and illegal guns in Toronto. TAVIS aims to reduce gang activity and gun violence in Toronto through targeted policing in some of the 13 priority neighborhoods where crime analysis indicates chronic or an acute escalation in violence (Siciliano, 2010). As an intervention strategy, TAVIS operates on the principle of geographic–specific, intelligence–led policing intelligent–based policing that targets known gang associates engaged in guns and drug activities who are on the verge of committing an offence. According to the Toronto police, an Anti–Violence Intervention Strategy was a necessary investment in wake of increasing gun violence among poor (primarily black) youth in the city of Toronto, which peaked to its ultimate high in the year 2005 known as the 'year of the gun'. • 53. An Outsider In Ball State University's Parade What's it like to be an outsider in society? Ball State University's production of Parade presents Leo Frank, the protagonist and the one depicted as a foreigner. No matter what stage of life a person is in, being cast as an outsider is a common feeling, whether it's going to a new school, meeting new people, or simply moving 873 miles (Brooklyn, NY to Atlanta, GA) away from home. However, others believe that being on the outside is a blessing in disguise – providing the user with vigilance and a better understanding on those around them. Regardless of that matter, everyone knows what it's like to be the newcomer to any particular group or setting. Ball State's management of Parade captures the portrayal of what it's like to feel alienated in a town you cannot call home. Parade's persistent theme that "a person shouldn't be judged due to their character/background" is best corresponded through the lighting design during "Let At Work/ What Am I Waiting For?", Leo's acting of rubbing his hands together, and the costume design of Leo compared to all the townspeople. Objective Agrifarm Company's main objective is to determine the proper distribution, within a distribution network, to minimize the total shipping costs to deliver carloads from origin to the hubs and finally to the customers. To do so, we are given two distribution cost tables that explain the processing center shipping costs, meaning origin to hubs, and the customer shipping costs, meaning from hubs to the final customer. Therefore, the cost to ship rail cars of grain from the origins and hubs will determine the proper distribution of rail cars from origin to destination. Solution Our optimal solution (total shipping cost) to meet all ten constraints is $513,000. Origin Muncie will not ship to hub Louisville but will ship 3 rail cars of grain to hub Cincinnati. • 61. Juvenile Delinquency : The Basis Of Public Fear This essay will look at the way in which juvenile delinquency came into existence and became the basis of public fear. It will look at the way the concept of 'childhood' was developed and the way in which laws brought juvenile delinquency in to the media's concern. In order to understand the way in which juvenile delinquency was legislated we need to understand the basis of juvenile delinquency which starts from the process of 'childhood'. This concept of childhood was not in existence before the 17th century, there was also no concept of youth and adulthood, and therefore there was no social problem of 'youth's'. The perception that there was no concept of childhood was first introduced by the French scholar PHILIPPE ARIÈS in his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Fionda, 2005) At this period, children were being exploited through tough child labour. The children were treated as miniature adults, they played a crucial role within the industrialization. However, there was no clear boundary between adulthood and childhood, in the pre–industrial period societies children worked together with adults in everyday life, they did not live in an isolated world or behave in a different way and were not treated to different understanding of morality. (Muncie, 2009, p.48).The way children lived in this era was no different in the way that adult life was lived, they were involved in drinking alcohol, physical – intensive working, gambling. In which today's postmodern society would define as unsuitable and illegal way of living for children, In order to maintain their 'innocence' and morality' (Empey, 1982, p.33). Late 18th century the concept of childhood was viewed as the loss of innocence and the attainment of adult abilities for evil actions and behaviour, therefore there was a need to protect the innocence of children. Hendricks identified this as the 'Romantic Child'. Furthermore, there was a development of welfare approach and child welfare reform, which felt the need to protect children against the immorality of the world. The 1833 Factory Acts restricted that no child below the age of 9 was to be active in brutal working environments, children's working hours cut down rapidly to ensure there they ... • 69. Criminal Activity And Its Control Within the first section of this essay it will explore the ways in which contemporary criminology such as realist and critical challenge popular representations, commonsensical images and explanations of crime and its control. Contemporary criminology uses scientific methodology, creating research data that looks at the larger issue of crime, being the social construct of ever altering societies and cultures. Contemporary criminology contains a wide range of theoretical approaches from which all take stands against the older theories like Lombroso's classic theory 'Born criminals'. As a result criminologists recognises that what is perceived as criminal activity and crime is constantly altering. "Radical criminology came about in the late 1960's and originates from a group of sociologists and activists which all shared the same two views: a dissatisfaction with 'traditional' or mainstream criminology, and the fact that they were largely influenced by the labelling perspective" (Coleman and Norris, 2000, p.73.) it is from this group that radical criminology was 'born'. Radical criminology is a textbook example of ever changing criminological theories which indeed challenges popular representations of crime like the media. Radical criminological theories do not conform to a single definition; it originates from a few different criminological theories such as Marxism and feminism. They caught my eye because they have produced some really great vintage and retro style fonts. I also chose this font foundry because they have an unusual font buying system where they leave their visitors with the choice to pay what they can afford for the fonts on the site. They left it this way expecting people to have a moral code and to pay what they felt the font was deserving; as well as giving designers with little means the ability to purchase fonts to use in their designs. After doing a little digging through more searches I found the history of how the Lost Type Co–Op was founded. It originally started off as a bet between the co–founders Riley Cran and Tyler Galpin after finding a 1940's Ball glass jar poster both designers were enamored with the secondary font promoting the glass jars. Cran bet Galpin that he could produce a full alphabet of the font face in 24 hours; Galpin said if he could he would make a website for the font. 24 hours and some collaboration later the Font Muncie was completed. They offered Muncie up to the design community as a completely free typeface. The script also explores the theme of machine vs. man, as well as man's need to survive. The moral question of how far man should take technology and play the role of God is also examined. These are solid themes. With that said, the script would benefit from more development. The opening sets the tone for a sci– fi thriller; however, the opening needs to be more visual to engage the audience. The overall tension will be intensified if there's a stronger foe. Consider creating some form of a ticking clock tension or urgency to the plot. In his 2005 book "Youth and Crime", John Muncie stated that "young people are propelled into crime through circumstances beyond their control". While this may be true in part, there have been many studies written since which differ significantly. Conversely, there are also studies that are at least in part, if not wholly in line with his findings. Whether the motivation is greed or or the result of environmental factors, it is not known as to whether there is a definitive cause for criminal behaviour. There are myriad causal factors of youth crime, however Muncie had his mind set on the theory that it was something you were born with, not something brought on by conditioning or the result of external environmental tormentors. Muncie based his theory on a study that took place in the early twentieth century. Several attempts were made by Goring (1913) to determine a certain set of physical characteristics that only criminals had. According to Goring, his study proved that all criminals were born into delinquency and so young people could not help but be forced into a life of crime. To arrive at this conclusion, Goring took over 3,000 male prisoners into various communities around London and then compared them to various control groups of non prisoners. He then used correlation analysis and found that the average criminal tended ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Then it stops, becomes silent. Both teams, go and sit at their benches, while the officials meet in the middle to talk about the previous play. It has been five minutes since the play was out on pause. Still no decision has been made. So the officials call in the line judges. After about 8 minutes of discussion, the officials come over the microphone. " We were having troubles of a call. There were a total of 3 different calls made. The "down" official called the ball out, while the line judge called it in. Then you guys put your opinions in it and also called it both in and out. Since there is no camera, we can't do a video review. Our choice as the 2 officials and 2 line judges is that we are going to call the ball out, and give the ball to the Blackhawks. That was the best decision to make", explained the first official. Shortly after the official call was made, some parts of the was cheering because they were pleased with the call, ... I have taken courses in video production, audio production, news production, copywriting, scriptwriting, newswriting, interviewing, reporting, photography, graphic design, media analysis, and media law. I have really enjoyed getting familiar with all of the different journalism, telecommunications, and news departments at Ball State University, and have aspects of each program that I enjoy. • 114. How Can We Best Define Crime? How can we best define crime? Discuss. What is Crime? Many People may have different definitions about crime. Some might say crime is an act of offense/breaking the law and is punishable by conviction. Others might argue that crime is an act whereby offenders `might cause harm to the society and should be punished for their actions. Crime has been a great concern to the society as a whole. Sometimes offenders commit crimes intentionally to hurt someone they don't like or just to cause harm to their fellow human beings. Some people might argue that, some crimes might refer to certain acts. Some People argue that ''criminal behaviour in violation of the criminal law is not a crime unless its prohibited by the criminal Law'' (Sutherland & Cressey (1924/1970 in John Muncie pp4).The criminal Law is a set of specific rules that regard human behaviour which has been publicized by the political power, which applies equally to all the members of the population. No matter how moral, dangerous or damaging it is to the society it is not a crime unless the authorities, the government have made it a law. This is quite dangerous because offenders might commit crimes which are not likely to break the law and might not be classified as crime. This article by Taipan argues that ''only those who are criminals have been adjudicated as such by the courts'' (Tappan, 1947, in John Muncie p.100).Some circumstances must be meet an act before it can be classified as crime these are The offender ... Their daughter was put in jail for attempted murder. She was going to locked away for a long time. Between driving him to baseball practice and taking him to his appointments, the couple didn't have much time for themselves. Bessie tried to talk Floyd into going to Muncie but he wasn't having it. However, it is agreed that criminology is a multidisciplinary subject which is interested in the concept of crime and its impact and role in society. In its attempts to understand crime it is influenced by theories of philosophy, psychology and law (amongst others). Treadwell (2013) comes to describe crime as a malleable and constantly evolving concept however he acknowledges that there are massive variances in the way that crime is conceptualized (based on geographical differences but also time periods). Behaviours which previously have been labelled as criminal have been decriminalized where as certain behaviours which were not criminal previously have now been labelled as criminal. It is a constantly evolving concept. There are various perspectives of crime, including the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Crime is defined by Muncie (2006) as behaviour which is proscribed by criminal law, however, he similarly to Treadwell (2013) acknowledges that this in itself is not enough to depict its full scope. The perceptions and understandings of what people consider to be criminal are highly variable. The notion of crime is constantly changing and evolving, and is relative to both the time period but also the societies geographical location. This was comparably argued by Treadwell (2013) in his analysis of crime. What is considered to be criminal in one era may not be true of other eras of time. This understanding also varies between different societies and their geographical differences. There is no one broad understanding of what is considered criminal and what is not, or where this line should be drawn. Crime is a continuously contested concept across various spheres of the academic world (Muncie, 2006). Strategies of Youth Justice Policies Here we will look at the strategies of youth justice policies and practice with the ideological motivations and identify and evaluate the social and political context. The 1908 Child Act; Children and Young Persons Act, the Criminal Justice Act; Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and Anti–Social Behaviour Act 2003 will be discussed. Youth justice is a creature of historical development. The structure of the industry is full of dominant philosophies which have seeped into the foundations, which still monopolise and govern contemporary practice and although new perspectives have emerged over the recent history, it is necessary to trace the evolution over the last century to understand the logic behind the practice. The strategies of youth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... More young people and 'pre–delinquent' children were being drawn into the 'net' of juvenile justice and Springhall (1986) remarked that the impact of the 1933 Children and Young Persons Act seemed to direct young people to court, rather than divert, under the assumption that care and treatment would follow (cited in Muncie, 2009). The system legitimised by welfare is always likely to come under attack from those seeking more a punitive and retributive response. Over the 1950s and 1960s local authority care provided attendance centres for the neglected and detention centres established by the impact of the Criminal Justice Act 1948, 'retraining' offenders through punitive labour brought confusion concerning the control and treatment of juveniles. The Children and Young Persons (Amended) Act 1952 allowing courts to remand offenders to local authorities and those supervised following release on license from approved schools had effectively created two strategies in which the system of control (the criminal justice system) and care (welfare system) became intertwined. An enlarged welfare state, part of the Labour Party's vision, brought about the highly controversial 1969 Children and Young Persons Act seeking alternatives to detention by care orders, proceedings and treatment along with advocating a ... • 130. Should Youth Offenders Be Held Responsible For Their Actions? How should children in trouble with the law be responded to, by prioritising their welfare or by prioritising justice? Some may view a child as innocent and incapable of being able to maintain self–control in certain situations, whether they are unable to understand what they may have done or whether it is the child who should be held responsible for their actions. Others share a view that whether someone is a child or not they should be held responsible for their actions. This debate between welfare and justice could also be looked at with the idea of whether youth offenders should be looked at as a child first or as an offender first. Over the history of youth justice in England and wales there has been toing and froing between the idea of welfare and justice and after looking at the available evidence and information this paper will suggest what may be viewed as the most effective way of responding to youth offending and troubled children. In the history of youth offending prior to the nineteenth century youth offenders were treated as adults, sent to adult prisons and in some cases they were even hanged. Childhood was not, in the eyes of working class parents, employers and the law, an important chapter in their lives but gradually with regards to criminal behavior and social and legal control this changed (Burke, 2008 p.48). In the 1830s there was an attempt at creating a process to accommodate young offenders, for one example Parkhurst, which was the first penal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 138. Essay On Ball State University Ball State University is a very reputable school with a lot of well–thought–out policies. Since 1918, Ball State has maintained a well–organized university, which is impressive when you consider the large enrollment number. However, one policy that Ball State could improve is the visitation policy. The current visitation policy is generally one of the biggest criticisms with Ball State, and for good reason. The current policy does not permit guests over in the dorms past midnight on weeknights. The reason why the policy is a problem is because it hinders the students' academic experience, as it would deny study groups from meeting in a dorm past midnight. A feasible solution that Ball State could employ would be to extend the visitation policy to twenty–four hour visitation, but increase the consequences if hall rules are broken. This would be a more effective way of teaching responsibility, as well as allowing students to gain more academic independence. The main problem with the policy is that not allowing guests after midnight could be detrimental to study groups that want to work at later times. According to a survey among first–year students at Ball State, over half of the participants said that they usually have to study past midnight on school nights (Survey). Due to the frequent group projects that some college students have to do, this policy is an obstacle that they must work around. If the residence halls would allow overnight visitation on weeknights, study ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 146. Meth Is A Normal Piece Of News Meth has become a normal piece of news in Muncie, Indiana. When someone searches "Muncie, Indiana problems" the first hit is "Meth Crisis." When people think about starting a family or even just relocating to another city or town, they search the statistics and news of the various cities. If the first thing they find out about one city is that it is number one for its large per capita number of meth labs in Indiana, that's not going to persuade anyone to move there. Without new residents and current families moving away, the ripple effect becomes a vicious cycle, taking away jobs, especially the "mom and pop" stores which rely on local customers. Meth also brings in a huge problem with violence, as any drug would. Reasonable people don't want to be around violence. They do not want their families injured or even killed because of someone else's problems. In fact, they don't want their family members even exposed to the issues that meth directly and indirectly contributes to. According to the Indy Star, "They (those who operate a meth lab) were stripped down and given those clean suits to wear; that way they don 't contaminate a police car or City Hall or anywhere they have to go." Having dealt with the chemicals makes one toxic enough to contaminate everything within its presence, imagine all the people who are not caught but continue to be out in the town. From my observations, I will be discussing what I witnessed based on the questions I was asked to observe on. I was able to observe Mrs. Haughn, who was teaching the students' math at a fifth grade level. We were assigned a time to go and see how the teacher organized lesson plans, the content during the time period, identify items in the classroom, we would want in our future classrooms, how students participated, the overall environment of the classroom, and how the content was being taught. On the first day I observed in the classroom, I immediately saw that Mrs. Haughn plans in advance. She stays organized by having a scheduled routine on the board for the students to be aware of the following topic being taught or reviewed. During the second day I observed, she was planning in advance by reminding the students there was going to be a test the following day.
