Human Trafficking Narrative Essay
March 11, 2012 Lives Ruined in Traffic Niculae GAMENŢ–ANTONIU mentions a young 19 year
old young women, who lived in Serbia, was without a job in a poor economical situation. She was
living with her father, who was an abusive alcoholic. After being abused enough by her father, she
decided to start searching for a job not only in her hometown , but also in its surrounding areas. She
applied for a waitress job, earned the job and moved to the new town. The owner never paid her the
settled salary, treated her in a very unprofessional manner and sexually harassed her. Under these
conditions she trusted a close friend who was a man (she would eventually find out he was her boss'
friend) who offered her a job in a well known Italian resort, ... Show more content on

Even though condoms are used during sexual exploitation the young women are still in danger.
BoĹľidar Banovic explains that the use of condoms provides false safety regarding AIDS
transmission, and leads to other sexually transmitted diseases and viruses such as: Chlamydia
infection, condilomi (genital warts), genital herpes as well as urinarz tract infections, scabies
(Sarcoptes scabies), lice (Pediculosis pubis), gonorrhea, syphilis, hepatitis A, B, and C. Condilomi is
caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). ΗΡV condiloma causes cervical cancer in women and
treatment must be initiated straight after detection. ΗΡV is commonly transmitted through sexual
contact, regardless of regular contact, anal or oral sex. It can also appear even if the condom is used,
as a partner could be a carrier of the virus, without any visible symptoms. The touch of infected skin
or contact of body liquids during sexual contact is sufficient to get infected. Statistics provided by
the US Centers for Prevention and Disease Control, state that at least 20 million people in the US
suffer from HPV. Estimations indicate that around 80% of sexually active population has some form
of this virus. In Croatia, it is estimated that about 60% of sexually active women is infected. In
Serbia, there are no valid statistics but it is expected that the numbers do not significantly differ (95).

Myiasis from Larvae and Pubic Lice
Myiasis (from the Greek "myi", fly) is defined as the invasion of living tissue by dipterous larvae.
Several fly species such as Oestrus ovis have been reported to cause myiasis, affecting humans
either directly, when the female fly deposits the larvae on the conjunctiva or eyelids of a human host
rather than a sheep or a goat, or indirectly, through dirty hands. Ocular myiasis presentations include
external ophthalmomyiasis, when the larvae is found in the external ocular tissues, leading to ocular
surface disorders (conjunctivitis, punctuate keratitis) or pseudoorbital cellulitis, and internal
ophthalmomyiasis, a rare condition with a clinical course ranging from asymptomatic to severe
uveitis, retinal detachment and optic atrophy. Several methods of treatment have been reported
depending on the location of the larva. Management of external myiasis includes the mechanical
removal of the larvae in association with topical administration of steroids to reduce conjunctival
inflammation.(1) This may be a challenging maneuver, as the larva tends to firmly attach to the
ocular surface. Some authors recommend the use of topical anesthetic to loosen the larval
attachment.(2) Double eversion of the eyelids is mandatory to ensure that larvae have been
completely removed. Early removal decreases the potential of vision loss and larvae dissemination.
For subretinal larvae, argon laser photocoagulation has been used with successful results.
Vitrectomy and retinotomy is recommended if

WORMS LICE & SCABIES, GROSSEST HEALTH ISSUES
WORMS LICE & SCABIES, GROSSEST HEALTH ISSUES
Worms, lice and scabies are listed as infestation caused by large parasites which attack human body
for food, shelter and reproduction. Poor hygiene and overcrowding are main causes for the infection.
The best way to prevent parasitic infestation is taking care of body hygiene, precaution while
consuming food and proper toileting procedures. Treatment consists of treating the affected
individual and his or her family members who share the house hold.
Let us now see each one of these grossest health issues separately.
Worm infestation.
There are many kinds of worms such as pin worm, tape worm, dog worm, hook worm and cat
worm. These are parasites which need a human host to fulfill their life ... Show more content on

Some enter the lymphatic system of the body and produce local redness, pain; abscess and big
lumps sometimes produce elephant size legs.
How is it diagnosed?
The doctor sets the diagnoses depending on the signs and symptoms. He may do some blood test,
stool test or take a bit of tissue for checking. Some–times he may use X rays and ultrasonography to
arrive at a diagnosis.
Who should be treated?
Mostly the affected person, if it is intestinal worm infestation it is better to treat the entire family.
How is it treated?
Once the doctor is sure of the type of worm infestation he gives oral tablets to eradicate the worms
from the body.
Lice Infestation (Pediculosis)
What is Pediculosis?
Medical term for lice infestation is Pediculosis. It is one of the oldest infestations known to human.
10,000 years old fossil shows evidence of louse eggs. Like the other infestation this also is a global
health problem. Lice live on the body surface such as the scalp, pubic hair or facial hair. It is
endemic throughout the world, about hundreds of million people world–wide are affected at one
time.
How does it spread?
It spreads from directly from one person even during ordinary activities such as playing together,
sharing of personal items like towel, pillows, bed sheet and combs.
What happens when the louse enters the host?
Louse pierces the scalp skin and feeds human blood. During the process of

Disease Report on Scabies Essay
Disease Report on Scabies Scabies is a very unpleasant skin disease to acquire. This disease is also
known as the human itch mite. In the medical field, it is known as Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis.
Scabies have been around for centuries. Scabies was first documented in a letter written by Dr.
Giovan Cosimo Bonomo on July, 18, 1687, to Francesco Redi2. This letter provided the first
accurate presentation of the mite, with detailed drawings of its appearance. In this letter, Dr.
Bonomo stated that "the sarcoptes scabiei could be transmitted by direct contact, and it stuck to
almost everything." Dr. Bonomo made the discovery by going to villages that had the 'itch', and
actually managed to obtain a 'sac' from people by sticking a needle ... Show more content on

It is then examined under a microscope and if any part of the life cycle of the mite is present, then a
positive diagnosis is the result. (Parish LC, Witkowski JA. The Saga of Ectoparasitoses; Scabies and
Pediculosis. Int J Dermatol, 1999; 38:432–3). The life cycle of the scabies undergo four stages.
First, females deposit three to four eggs per day under the skin. These eggs will hatch in three to
four days, then larvae move to the skin surface and burrow into the stratum corneum to construct
molting pouches. In the larval stage, eggs emerge and have three pair of legs. After the larval molt,
the resulting nymphs have four pair of legs. This form molts into slightly larger nymphs before
molting into adults. The transmission of the scabies usually is passed by direct, prolonged, skin–to–
skin contact with a person who is already infested. Even without any symptoms, the infected person
can spread the scabies and can easily be transmitted to household members and sexual partners.
Scabies is a common condition found worldwide; it affects people of all races and social classes
regardless of hygiene. There are one million cases per year in the United States. Institutions such as
prisons, nursing homes and childcare centers are often sites of scabies outbreaks due to the crowded
conditions and close contact with people. (http://www.cdc.gov/scabies/). Prevention and control are
done by avoiding direct skin–to–skin contact with an infected person and

Crab Louse Research Paper
Lice Overview: The lice are insects that can infect humans and animals. The louse that attacks the
man comes from the species Pediculs Humanus and crab louse. The crab louse, commonly called
crab, lives and reproduces in the pubic hair, eyelashes and eyebrows Causes: Pediculus Humanus,
also called louse, primarily infests the scalp, has a reproductive cycle that starts with the nit (egg) to
form the louse. The nits are laid in large part behind the ears and on the nape, adhere to the hair
thanks to an adhesive that secrete, hatch after a week. The louse feeds on blood aspiring pricking the
scalp, causing severe itching. The louse if removed from the head, having no more nourishment,
dies after a few hours. Symptoms: Usually after a few days after infection the person begins to have
itchy and head scratching, initially to areas of the head where the eggs are laid (behind and near the
ears), following the neck and upper trunk. The itching is caused by an allergic reaction to the saliva
of the insect and, therefore, between the infestation and the onset spends a few days in which the

Pediculosis Research Paper
Pediculosis Pediculosis, more widely known as lice, is a transmittable skin infection caused by a
blood sucking parasite known as louse. Lice's main supply of sustenance is the blood of their host,
they usually feed about five times per day causing severe itching, also known as pruritus. Pruritus
can lead to sores, which can lead to a secondary bacterial skin infection. Lice can affect the hair,
body, and pubic region. In the United States alone it is found that from 6 million to 12 million new
cases of head lice are diagnosed in school children each year. Pediculus humanus capitis infects the
head, which can mainly be found on the scalp, on the back of the neck, and behind the ears. An
eyelash infestation can occur, but it is unlikely. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Personal hygiene is major factor for this infestation. It commonly occurs among people who do not
have the luxury of changing clothes or showering often. It is prevalent in refugee camps and in
homeless people. Body lice resides in the seams of clothing, and they are primarily found by the
trunk, neck, and thighs. Pubic lice is caused by Phthirus pubis which is commonly referred to as
crabs because of its claws on its second and third legs that so closely resemble a rock crab. Pubic
lice in transmitted through sexual contact and is highly likely to be caught by an unsuspecting
person. Risk for pubic lice from sexual experiences can exceed 90 percent. Infestation of pubic lice
is found in the pubic area, rectal area, and can also be found, in males, in facial, chest, and/or
abdominal hair. Head and pubic lice must be treated through the manual removal of the louse with a
comb, then pediculicides will be used. No non pesticide lotions are currently available in the United
States, but they can be purchased in the United Kingdom, and they have the best treatment results
for head lice. Treatment for lice infestations exceeds 1 billion dollars every year. Due to the overuse
of pediculicides new infestations of lice are becoming resistant to typical treatments and new
treatments are being considered and studied, such as essential oils and suffocation

Head lice are small, pesky bugs that spend their days living on the human scalp and feeding on
human blood. These parasites are a common problem world–wide with more than 6 million cases
per year solely in the United States (Bartels, Peterson, & Taylor, 2001). A study recently conducted
in the United States shows that most head lice have become resistant to over– –the–counter
medications, making it harder than ever for people to get rid of the parasites. The study took lice
from 48 states and through genomic DNA extraction between lice of the same sex and life span

In times past lice has been known as the nasty bug people can get in their hair. Never have people
had problems with fighting the bugs off or paying for the medication to fight them off. Usually
people would just drive to their local supermarket and buy the easy–to–use over the counter
medication to get rid of pests. This type of medication would cost about $8.99– $19.99 at most
depending on brands. Because these medications are tending to let families down, they have to find
an alternative. Angela Shirley, owner of The Lice Slayers in Lawrence, has seen firsthand the results
of this increasing resistance. Parents have been coming to this company for a while, saying they
have tried three or four times to rid their child's hair of lice with no luck. Lice Slayers offers the
"AirAlle Treatment" which uses a special device to apply heat of about 138 degrees close to the
scalp to kill the unwanted visitors and their eggs. In most cases, one treatment, which costs $165, is
all it takes to rid an infestation. "They're not going to become resistant to the heat," Shirley said
(Rudavsky 40). For Shirley, business has really been nice, having over 100 cases in August.

Pediculosis capitis is the infestation of head lice, tiny insects that feed on the blood from the human
scalp. According to Mayo CLinic, it usually results from the direct transfer of lice from the hair of
one person to the hair of another. A lot of people think that if somebody has lice they have poor
personal hygiene, but this has been proven untrue, lice like a clean scalp to feed off of. According to
Mayo Clinic, because head lice are spread primarily by head–to–head contact, the risk of
transmission is greatest among younger people who play or go to school together. In the United
States, cases of head lice most often occur in children in preschool through middle school. Many
people may not even be aware that they have a lice infestation. Some common signs and symptoms
may help a person be made aware of lice. These symptoms include: itching of the scalp, neck, and
ears, according to Mayo Clinic the itching is a sign of an allergic reaction; lice may even be visible

Speech On Abandoned Children
There are many reasons for the large number of abandoned children in India. The children can be
unwanted (mostly girls), illegitimate or orphans due to diseases. The children have to be taken care
of one way or the other. Orphan children are the deprived and the isolated population deserving
special attention to become healthy and responsible children, physically fit, mentally alert and
morally healthy endowed with the skills and the motivation needed by society. UNICEF and global
partners define an orphan as a child who has lost one or both parents. An estimated 31 million
children in India, aged 0–17 years, are orphaned and abandoned according to the most recent
statistics from UNICEF.
Proper family environment plays an important role in the life of children. Nobody can deny the
important role of parents in developing balanced and harmonious development of personality. But
unfortunately cruel fortune deprives some children of the sympathetic affectionate parental care.
These children are known as orphaned children. An orphan is a child permanently bereaved of his or
her parents. In common usages, an orphan does not have any surviving parent to care for him or her.
Because of parental deprivation some children are reared in destitute homes and in orphanages. This
group of children is termed as institutionalised orphan children. These ... Show more content on

Head Lice: Providing Effective Education to Children and Families
Pediculus humanus capitis is the medical term given to the ever so common head lice found on
many school age children, generally between the ages of 5 and 12 years old. Head lice is found only
on humans and typically any time of the year, however the incidence rate is highest between the
months of August and November (Price, Burkhart, Burkhart, & Islam, 1999). Contrary to popular
belief, the wingless parasites do not jump from one host to another. They are only transmitted via
close contact between human hair or through soft fabric items such as hats, scarves, combs, and
towels. Head lice do not carry or transmit diseases to their host, but they can make the scalp very
itchy and removing them is an extremely tedious process. Head lice can also be very embarrassing
for the children and the parents as well. The school nurse plays an important role in discovering the
infestation and effectively educating the family of the child to ensure successful results with
treatment and elimination. Most importantly the school nurse must be particularly sensitive to the
child's feelings regarding lice and avoid excluding the child from any activities to prevent shaming
from their peers and overall feelings of embarrassment (Price et al., 1999).

Head Lice : A Growing Problem
Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitus) is a growing problem and is a concern throughout the world,
affecting hundreds of millions of individuals globally.1 It affects all socioeconomic groups.2
Children aged 3 to 11 are the primary population affected with an estimated 6 to12 million
infestations occurring annually in the United States. Family members of those affected also
contribute to the number of infestations.1,3 Head lice infestations place a large burden on society.
An economic cost of an estimated annual $1 billion is reported in the United States. This cost is
attributed to treatment costs, loss of funding to school systems due to excessive absences of
students, and lost wages from work missed by caregivers tending to their children.2,4 Affected
individuals' quality of life is also impacted. Although head lice is not associated with poor hygiene,
it still carries a major stigma along with it.2,3 This is especially true among children in the school
setting. As a result, children are ashamed and embarrassed socially.2 Another concern associated
with the treatment of head lice is the increasing issue of resistance resulting from the widespread
overuse and misuse of conventional pediculicides.1,5–7 Although the exact rates of resistance are
not currently available, rates differ between communities and countries.2,5–8 There is an undeniable
consensus that the efficacy of many current and first line treatments are failing. Among these, the
class of pyrethroid pediculicides

caused by mental torture and uncertainties, mainly due to the lack of knowledge whether your

How Candidiasis Is A Fungal Infection Caused By Yeasts
Candidiasis: Overview and Causes
Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by yeasts that belong to the genus Candida. There are at
least 15 distinct Candida species that cause human disease, but >90% of invasive disease is caused
by the 5 most common pathogens, C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. tropicalis, C. parapsilosis, and C.
krusei with candida albicans being the most prevalent.(Ostrosky–Zeichner et al., 2015) Candida
yeasts normally reside in the intestinal tract and can be found on mucous membranes and skin
without causing infection; however, overgrowth of these organisms can cause symptoms to develop.
Symptoms of candidiasis vary depending on the area of the body that is infected.(CDC, 2016e)
The different types of Candidiasis are determined by the area of the body they affect. Oropharyngeal
candidiasis, otherwise known as Thrush, inhabits the buccal cavity or throat. Candidiasis of the
vagina is commonly referred to as a yeast infection. The most clinically significant version of
candidiasis is invasive candidiasis, which happens as a result of a candida species entering the
bloodstream and spreading throughout the body. Invasive candidiasis is primarily found in
immunocompromised patients such as those suffering from HIV, undergoing corticosteroid therapy,
chemotherapy, or those with diabetes.
Candidiasis: Signs and Symptoms and Sequelae

Head Lice Research Paper
Pediculus humanus capitis, also known as head lice, has been infesting the heads of humans for
hundreds of thousands of years. Head lice are different than other types of lice, in that head lice do
not spread diseases (4). Infestation can happen to anyone of any age; although elementary school
aged, female children are most likely to contract head lice (1,2,3,4,5,6). The only host to head lice is
humans (4). House pets do not spread head lice (1). Head lice is usually spread by head to head
contact. Less often they are spread by items such as combs, brushes, hats or scarves (1). The legs
prevent the "grabbing" on to the hard surface of such items as combs and brushes (4). Contrary to
stereotypical belief, personal hygiene, economic status and income do not contribute to the
contracting of head lice (1). Although poor sanitization and hygiene, overly crowded living
arrangements, and those living at or below the poverty level, lead to the survival of head lice. Proper
education from school nurses can aid in the prevention and control of head lice infestations (2).
Head lice can have some contributing qualities. Evolutionary biologists are using head lice to
investigate the evolution of humans and primates (8). Adult head lice are approximately 2–3
millimeters long. They move by crawling around the scalp. They cannot jump nor fly. Over–the–

incubate and hatch are within ÂĽ of an inch from the scalp; the nits further than ÂĽ of an inch are
either hatched, not viable, or empty. Determining the status of the nit is difficult to distinguish

Human Trafficking Narrative Essay

  • 1. Human Trafficking Narrative Essay March 11, 2012 Lives Ruined in Traffic Niculae GAMENŢ–ANTONIU mentions a young 19 year old young women, who lived in Serbia, was without a job in a poor economical situation. She was living with her father, who was an abusive alcoholic. After being abused enough by her father, she decided to start searching for a job not only in her hometown , but also in its surrounding areas. She applied for a waitress job, earned the job and moved to the new town. The owner never paid her the settled salary, treated her in a very unprofessional manner and sexually harassed her. Under these conditions she trusted a close friend who was a man (she would eventually find out he was her boss' friend) who offered her a job in a well known Italian resort, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though condoms are used during sexual exploitation the young women are still in danger. BoĹľidar Banovic explains that the use of condoms provides false safety regarding AIDS transmission, and leads to other sexually transmitted diseases and viruses such as: Chlamydia infection, condilomi (genital warts), genital herpes as well as urinarz tract infections, scabies (Sarcoptes scabies), lice (Pediculosis pubis), gonorrhea, syphilis, hepatitis A, B, and C. Condilomi is caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). ΗΡV condiloma causes cervical cancer in women and treatment must be initiated straight after detection. ΗΡV is commonly transmitted through sexual contact, regardless of regular contact, anal or oral sex. It can also appear even if the condom is used, as a partner could be a carrier of the virus, without any visible symptoms. The touch of infected skin or contact of body liquids during sexual contact is sufficient to get infected. Statistics provided by the US Centers for Prevention and Disease Control, state that at least 20 million people in the US suffer from HPV. Estimations indicate that around 80% of sexually active population has some form of this virus. In Croatia, it is estimated that about 60% of sexually active women is infected. In Serbia, there are no valid statistics but it is expected that the numbers do not significantly differ (95). The young women would be forced to have sex up to 25 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Myiasis from Larvae and Pubic Lice Myiasis (from the Greek "myi", fly) is defined as the invasion of living tissue by dipterous larvae. Several fly species such as Oestrus ovis have been reported to cause myiasis, affecting humans either directly, when the female fly deposits the larvae on the conjunctiva or eyelids of a human host rather than a sheep or a goat, or indirectly, through dirty hands. Ocular myiasis presentations include external ophthalmomyiasis, when the larvae is found in the external ocular tissues, leading to ocular surface disorders (conjunctivitis, punctuate keratitis) or pseudoorbital cellulitis, and internal ophthalmomyiasis, a rare condition with a clinical course ranging from asymptomatic to severe uveitis, retinal detachment and optic atrophy. Several methods of treatment have been reported depending on the location of the larva. Management of external myiasis includes the mechanical removal of the larvae in association with topical administration of steroids to reduce conjunctival inflammation.(1) This may be a challenging maneuver, as the larva tends to firmly attach to the ocular surface. Some authors recommend the use of topical anesthetic to loosen the larval attachment.(2) Double eversion of the eyelids is mandatory to ensure that larvae have been completely removed. Early removal decreases the potential of vision loss and larvae dissemination. For subretinal larvae, argon laser photocoagulation has been used with successful results. Vitrectomy and retinotomy is recommended if ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Disease Report on Scabies Essay Disease Report on Scabies Scabies is a very unpleasant skin disease to acquire. This disease is also known as the human itch mite. In the medical field, it is known as Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis. Scabies have been around for centuries. Scabies was first documented in a letter written by Dr. Giovan Cosimo Bonomo on July, 18, 1687, to Francesco Redi2. This letter provided the first accurate presentation of the mite, with detailed drawings of its appearance. In this letter, Dr. Bonomo stated that "the sarcoptes scabiei could be transmitted by direct contact, and it stuck to almost everything." Dr. Bonomo made the discovery by going to villages that had the 'itch', and actually managed to obtain a 'sac' from people by sticking a needle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is then examined under a microscope and if any part of the life cycle of the mite is present, then a positive diagnosis is the result. (Parish LC, Witkowski JA. The Saga of Ectoparasitoses; Scabies and Pediculosis. Int J Dermatol, 1999; 38:432–3). The life cycle of the scabies undergo four stages. First, females deposit three to four eggs per day under the skin. These eggs will hatch in three to four days, then larvae move to the skin surface and burrow into the stratum corneum to construct molting pouches. In the larval stage, eggs emerge and have three pair of legs. After the larval molt, the resulting nymphs have four pair of legs. This form molts into slightly larger nymphs before molting into adults. The transmission of the scabies usually is passed by direct, prolonged, skin–to– skin contact with a person who is already infested. Even without any symptoms, the infected person can spread the scabies and can easily be transmitted to household members and sexual partners. • 7. Crab Louse Research Paper Lice Overview: The lice are insects that can infect humans and animals. The louse that attacks the man comes from the species Pediculs Humanus and crab louse. The crab louse, commonly called crab, lives and reproduces in the pubic hair, eyelashes and eyebrows Causes: Pediculus Humanus, also called louse, primarily infests the scalp, has a reproductive cycle that starts with the nit (egg) to form the louse. The nits are laid in large part behind the ears and on the nape, adhere to the hair thanks to an adhesive that secrete, hatch after a week. The louse feeds on blood aspiring pricking the scalp, causing severe itching. The louse if removed from the head, having no more nourishment, dies after a few hours. Symptoms: Usually after a few days after infection the person begins to have itchy and head scratching, initially to areas of the head where the eggs are laid (behind and near the ears), following the neck and upper trunk. Lice's main supply of sustenance is the blood of their host, they usually feed about five times per day causing severe itching, also known as pruritus. Pruritus can lead to sores, which can lead to a secondary bacterial skin infection. Lice can affect the hair, body, and pubic region. In the United States alone it is found that from 6 million to 12 million new cases of head lice are diagnosed in school children each year. Pubic lice is caused by Phthirus pubis which is commonly referred to as crabs because of its claws on its second and third legs that so closely resemble a rock crab. Pubic lice in transmitted through sexual contact and is highly likely to be caught by an unsuspecting person. Risk for pubic lice from sexual experiences can exceed 90 percent. Infestation of pubic lice is found in the pubic area, rectal area, and can also be found, in males, in facial, chest, and/or abdominal hair. Head and pubic lice must be treated through the manual removal of the louse with a comb, then pediculicides will be used. Head Lice: Providing Effective Education to Children and Families Pediculus humanus capitis is the medical term given to the ever so common head lice found on many school age children, generally between the ages of 5 and 12 years old. Head lice is found only on humans and typically any time of the year, however the incidence rate is highest between the months of August and November (Price, Burkhart, Burkhart, & Islam, 1999). Contrary to popular belief, the wingless parasites do not jump from one host to another. They are only transmitted via close contact between human hair or through soft fabric items such as hats, scarves, combs, and towels. Head lice do not carry or transmit diseases to their host, but they can make the scalp very itchy and removing them is an extremely tedious process. Head lice can also be very embarrassing for the children and the parents as well. The school nurse plays an important role in discovering the infestation and effectively educating the family of the child to ensure successful results with treatment and elimination. Most importantly the school nurse must be particularly sensitive to the child's feelings regarding lice and avoid excluding the child from any activities to prevent shaming from their peers and overall feelings of embarrassment (Price et al., 1999). Family members of those affected also contribute to the number of infestations.1,3 Head lice infestations place a large burden on society. An economic cost of an estimated annual $1 billion is reported in the United States. This cost is attributed to treatment costs, loss of funding to school systems due to excessive absences of students, and lost wages from work missed by caregivers tending to their children.2,4 Affected individuals' quality of life is also impacted. Although head lice is not associated with poor hygiene, it still carries a major stigma along with it.2,3 This is especially true among children in the school setting. As a result, children are ashamed and embarrassed socially.2 Another concern associated with the treatment of head lice is the increasing issue of resistance resulting from the widespread overuse and misuse of conventional pediculicides.1,5–7 Although the exact rates of resistance are not currently available, rates differ between communities and countries.2,5–8 There is an undeniable consensus that the efficacy of many current and first line treatments are failing. There are at least 15 distinct Candida species that cause human disease, but >90% of invasive disease is caused by the 5 most common pathogens, C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. tropicalis, C. parapsilosis, and C. krusei with candida albicans being the most prevalent.(Ostrosky–Zeichner et al., 2015) Candida yeasts normally reside in the intestinal tract and can be found on mucous membranes and skin without causing infection; however, overgrowth of these organisms can cause symptoms to develop. Symptoms of candidiasis vary depending on the area of the body that is infected.(CDC, 2016e) The different types of Candidiasis are determined by the area of the body they affect. Oropharyngeal candidiasis, otherwise known as Thrush, inhabits the buccal cavity or throat. Candidiasis of the vagina is commonly referred to as a yeast infection. The most clinically significant version of candidiasis is invasive candidiasis, which happens as a result of a candida species entering the bloodstream and spreading throughout the body. Invasive candidiasis is primarily found in immunocompromised patients such as those suffering from HIV, undergoing corticosteroid therapy, chemotherapy, or those with diabetes.
