Comparison of Eric Liddell and Harold Abraham in Chariots...
Have you ever wondered how two athletes with two different faiths can change their own lives by their ways of living? Eric Liddell was a Scottish
runner and a faithful Christian. On the other hand, Harold Abraham was a British runner and a Jew who struggled to change other people's thought of
Jews. Both of these men ran in the 1924 Olympics for different purposes. The movie "Chariots of Fire" showed how Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams
differed from one another. Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams were different in their faith, economic status, and their motivations.
First, Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams differed in their faith. Eric Liddell was a faithful Christian. As a faithful Christian, Eric Liddell frequently
attended church on Sundays. Not only did he attend church, but he also preached in different churches. The movie ("Chariots of Fire", Hugh
Hudson) showed a scene where he was preaching and reading a passage from the Bible. On the other hand, Harold Abrahams was of the Jewish faith.
For instance, Jews do not eat pork because in the Old Testament the Israelites were commanded to abstain from it. Proof that Harold Abrahams
followed this belief was seen in the movie when it showed that his girlfriend Sybil order pork in the restaurant and Harold felt first offended, and then
amused by her mistake. In nineteen twenty–four Jews were frequently disrespected regarded as an inferior race. An example of this was when Rodgers,
the receptionist in Harold's dormitory, called

History of Australia
Australia has come a long way to where they are today since their journey began back in 1788, from penal colony all the way to its own island
continent. As time went on slowly, there began to be six different settlements. All starting off with: Van Diemen's Land, WesternAustralia, South
Australia, Victoria, Queensland, and Northern Territory. With many changes, some have become states while others have stayed territories. Even
though this land was thought to be found by the Europeans, it wasn't. Australia was first found by the Aborigines. They were thought to have come to
Australia about 50,000 years ago during the Ice Age. Then it all began, the gold rush ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even one time that may have been worse than the others which could be WWI. It took quite a devastation on them. There were many losses to them
along with many that had come back wounded. Finally once everything came back together came another war, WWII. This one you could say that
Australia was quite stronger and maybe more ready for. The country contributed much more to their allies in this time, and the men who came back,
came back with pride for their country. Even though they may have come back strong there sure was many wars that they weren't expecting. For
example, the Colonial Period, Sudan March, Boer War, Occupation of Japan, Korean War, Malayan Emergency, and the Indonesian Confrontation.
Along with the recent wars like Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iraq Second Gulf War, and now peacekeeping .Even though war can be tough, natural
disasters can be just as tough(australia.com).
Australia sure has been struck by many natural disasters and weren't quite expecting them or just may have not quite been prepared for them. Australia
has been through such like a drought all the way to cyclones from the ocean. Australia may also have fires such as bushfire, floods, heatwaves. This
has all come to the Australians causing trouble putting them into the face of adversity. Sometimes it has hit very bad, once it had come down so bad

Essay on The Olympics: Politics, Scandal, and Corruption
ABSTRACT: The purity of the Olympics has been smeared by scandal, corruption, boycotts, political disputes and even acts of terrorism. Sadly,
politics have taken control of the Olympics and turned it into a political and money–making extravaganza. Olympic boycotts became a way for
countries to protest each other. Hitler tried to use the Games to prove his belief of racial superiority. Wars interfered with the Olympics. Bloodshed
even covered the Olympics, in the 1972 Munich Games where terrorists killed eleven Israeli Olympic members. Unfortunately, throughout Olympic
history, politics have overshadowed the true focus of the Games. They were "intended to unite the countries of the world through friendly competition"
not segregate them ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Greeks had to suspend legal disputes and postpone capital punishment sentences until completion of the Games. Early Greek politicians took advantage
of the Games by using it as a tool to promote their city's importance (Hellenic World).
Politics started to overcome the Early Olympics when the Romans took over Greece. They not only restructured the stadiums, but also the Games
themselves. These new Games began to greatly stray from their origins until Emperor Theodosius I, being disgusted with the games, cancel them in
393 AD. The Olympics remained canceled until 1896 when Pierre de Coubertin fought to start the Modern Olympic Games. He did so with the
intention of promoting peace, unity, and sportsmanship through athletic competition. He knew politics would be a part of the Games, but not to the
extent that they have become. Over time, politics has taken over to make the games into so much more than friendly competition.
Politics has been evident almost from the beginning of the modern Olympics. At the 1908 London Olympics, American flag bearers refused to lower
their flag in front of the British monarchy, which the British saw as a sign of disrespect. The Russians also tried to prevent their enemy, the Finns,
from showing their flag. In the early Olympics, wars were suspended during the Games. Just the opposite happened in 1916 when the Games were
suspended because of World War I. The politicians pushed this even further when Germany,

Doping is a Fool’s Game
All athletes of all sports on a professional level must be required to undergo drug testing for performance enhancing drugs prior to participating in any
sporting event to ensure an equal level playing field for all competing athletes, no matter the sport. Furthermore, performance enhancing drugs are
illegal and must remain this way in order to keep fairness in the competitive world of sports.
The bottom line is that athletes should not be able to do performance enhancing drugs and continue to be allowed to performance in these sports. The
unfairness of doing these drugs does not allow for a fair game. Ultimately, these cheating athletes are superior in the field and dominate the other
athletes that do not take steroids and how can you call that a fair game when the athletes are not equal in performance due to a enhancing drug.
To further the argument, performance enhancing drugs must remain against the law to protect the athlete's health and well being. If today's athletes are
going to be so careless and take these drugs, we as a society must step in and take control of what these athletes are putting in their bodies. And if they
continue to break the law by taking performance enhancing drugs, then they must suffer the consequences by possibly being banned from the sport for
an extended period of time or a lifetime ban, which is would a result of their salaries and livelihood, endorsements and possible prison time. We must
take this issue with more than a grain

Politics in Sports
The Olympic Games are a worldwide competition that brings people of different cultures and backgrounds into one united area where they compete in
their specialized sports. These events, however, are not purely entertainment like they should have been. Today's societies are more dependent on
politics and therefore so are sports and the athletes competing, sometimes even without their own will. In various occasions across the world politics
was the main reason for athletes to withdraw from athletic events such as the world cup, Olympics, and any other worldwide or region wide
competitions. On the other hand politics sometimes are the reason that some teams re–establish themselves and get back into the world scene in sports.

The Mexico City Olympics in 1968 was a different yet similar incident where racism, closely related to anti–Semitism in the way society views the
rights of people of all races and kinds. United States athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos, African American males, competed in the 200 meter race
and won first and third place respectively. When they went on the podium the men didn't wear their shoes revealing black socks, they wore black track
uniforms and when were given their medals they revealed black gloves on their hands while putting their fists in the air as an act of representing the
Black Power movement. Later on the two athletes were banned from the Olympic village because of their unfit political statement to the apolitical
athletic forum the Olympics are supposed to be. This statement created controversy that again stirred the athletic event away from its task of
entertainment into a worldwide argument. Politics again have been a disruption to the long awaited athletic event. The Olympic committee had done
the right thing by making an example of these athletes and the committees' long run efforts to exclude politics from worldwide events; however, it
never acted on the Nazi salutes that the Germans used in the Berlin Olympics. Some may argue that it was their country's national salute, but we all
know today that it had a political background behind it that shouldn't have been ignored. This incident had every sign of discrimination against the

The modern Olympic movement has been shaped by many differentiating factors over the years. It has been altered by social, political, and economic
factors. More specifically, warring times, changes to social structures, and economic activity that varies by country have been the overall leading
factors that have shaped the Olympics over the years. The Olympics have shown over the decades that they can be affected by political conflict.
However, it seems that this is the point of the Olympics, to illustrate national pride, by competition. Bloodshed should not be the way for pride of one's
country to be shown, but it should be shown through competition, in the words of the founder of the modern Olympic movement, Pierre de... Show

However, the dramatic increase in the fees paid to broadcast Atlanta's games illustrates the time of peace after the Cold War ended, with over 800
million dollars being given to broadcast the games(9).
Finally, the Olympic games are altered by the diverse and changing social structures in the world. For instance, in 1908 a photograph of British
competitor Sybil Newall shooting her bow was found on newspapers across England(2). Whether this photograph was staged to sell newspapers or
not, it cannot be denied that this photograph indicates the beginning of women's movement, which was obviously an important issue during this time
in the world. With more leniency being given to women during this time, they were eventually being allowed to compete in the competitive events,
though only 2% of the athletes were women. This factor also continues to show during the 1992 games held in Spain, where by then 29% of women
were competing. Hassiba Boulmerka was an Algerian competitor during this time and spoke in an interview about her critics, and how being the first
Algerian to win an Olympic title did not depend on her gender, but simply on her strength in her mind and in body. Boulmerka was heavily criticized
by Muslim groups in Algeria for wearing shorts as she ran in the events. Despite this, the games illustrated the decreasing requirements for dresses and

How does E–sport influence the world? E–sport is the product of the development of electron because people can appreciate the high technology from
watching an E–sport game. A country's electron influences its technology development, and it can finally affect the economy of a country when
E–sport matches become a business. Therefore, the E–sport was created to show the country's level of development. Certainly, it came true now
because E–sport becomes a kind of sport and every country holds matches to compete with each other. Another factor that determines the formation of
E–sport is the entertainment need of people. There has been lots of people who fantasise about the virtual world since 10,000 years ago. People want
to have a different life in the virtual world and there are many people who cannot have enough abilities to acquire entertainment in the real world. A
part of these people have some disabilities but they also want to play sports like the normal people who do not have disabilities. Hence, the E–sport
came out and it made people's dreams come true. People play E–sport all over the world now, and it satisfies the entertainment need. Any person can
play E–sport because "Games are played competitively at amateur, semi–professional and professional levels, and some games have organized
competition in the form of leagues and tournaments."

The Olympic Games in Ancient Greece and Now
Throughout the years, major events such as the Olympic games have shaped our history, establishing global tradition and unity. The games serve as a
gathering for hundreds of competing nations, with each country showcasing their best athletes. However, the games were not always how they are
today and have changed dramatically throughout the years.
The first recorded Olympics were held in 776 B.C. However, it is believed that the games had been going on much earlier. It is said that Heracles, the
son of Zeus and Alcmene, was the founding father of the Olympic games (The Olympic Games 1). The Olympics essentially began as a religious
ceremony honoring the Greek god Zeus. The celebration was a sporting event held in Olympia, where the title of the "Olympics" was originated. The
festival occurred every four years in the summer and featured a series of athletic contests. Many of which are very different from the sports played
today.
The games played during the Olympics in ancient Greece over three thousand years ago consisted of running and equestrian events, javelin, wrestling
and boxing. Horse drawn chariots were often used in equestrian events. Over time new sports were added. As culture changed and the games became
international, sports such as chariot races were no longer a part of the modernized Olympics. The combination between wrestling and boxing was a
sport known as pankration. However the sport included no rules. This has changed with the introduction of the modern

HOSTING OLYMPICS GAME, IS IT WORTH IT?
Introduction
The Olympic games was firstly introduced in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece, as a religious celebration to honor Zeus, a god in Ancient Greek mythology.
It was a series of athletic competitions where representative from each city–state and then compete to become a winner. Nowadays, the modern
Olympic games has become one of the most prestigious sport event in the world. There are thousands of participants and athletes come from hundreds
of countries all over the world to compete in more than 50 sports. The first modern Games was held in Athens, Greece, in 1896 and then followed by
the winter games that were started in 1924. Each game is held quadrennial with two–year difference between summer and winter games. The Olympic
games is managed by International Olympic Committee (IOC) and there is also representative committee in several countries around the world which is
called National Olympic Games Committee (NOC).
Just like the others sport events, such as World Cup, the Olympic games is held in different cities and different countries. So that there must be a
special procedure to select the host city for the games, which is through an open–bidding process that is started seven years prior to the game. However,
the bidding process literally start earlier, it might be eight or nine years prior, since there will be also 'domestic competition' within a country to

Math and Graph Models Behind the Olympic Paul Vault Jump
Introduction
Every 4 years, the Olympic games is a major event around the world. International athletes come together to represent their own country at a sport. A
gold medal is given to the winner of each game. This math internal assessment aims to consider the trends of the wining men gold medalist's pole vault
height from 1932 to 2008, and predicting 1940 and 1944 record, when the Olympic games were not held due to the world war.
Data – Height Record 1932–2008
The table below shows the men pole vault gold medalists at various Olympic games between 1932 and 2008.
Table 1: the winning heights of men's pole vault in Olympic games for years between 1932 and 2008. (Excluding 1940 and 1944)

The war, however, stopped the improvement of the heights record. Therefore, we could deduce that the depression between 1936 and 1948 was due to
lack of training due to the war. When the games resumed in 1948, the athletes started to progress their record once again.
As you can see above, we could refine our model, disregarding the 1932 and 1936 record.
Graph 5: Graph of winning heights (m) against years since 1948
This refined model is better representation of data than graph 1 and 2 even if the line does not pass through every point. Passing through point
increased from 2 to 3 (4, 52 and 56) and majority of points are very close to the line. It is true that some points, such as point 16 and 20 quite far from
the line, but these points can be disregarded in this model, as the line is touching the following point 24.
This gives the new linear equation y=0.0264x+4.4338 However, even though refined graph has better equation than those of past one, there are some
limitations with using linear equation to determine the graph. Since a linear graph increases infinitely, and as humans have restraints to achieve to
record, their winning height can't keep increasing at this rate. It is not sustainable. Natural Logarithm Model
After considering the limitation of linear function and graph, I have discovered applying any model of equation that has an infinite increase range,
such as quadratic or exponential, is unrealistic, since the

One day in 776 B.C. the Greeks decided to honor the God Zeus with competition and sports. In 1894, the games were resurrected in a modern setting.
The olympics have expanded in size, events, stadiums, and athletes since then. From 12 nations, 206 athletes, 60,000 spectators, and 43 events, to 206

At the first modern olympics there were only 43 events, and now there are over 300. This is surprising because one would never think that the
olympics has ever been that small. Also, an astonishing number of athletes are from California (124 out of 558 from America). The USA has won the
most medals in the summer olympics, a total of 2189. One thing that has not changed is the most viewed event. It has been track since the first modern
olympics. This is very understandable because everyone enjoys a fast paced event that can change at any time. An article from History.com states, "In

The FIFA World Cup in Brazil took place from the 12th of June to the 13th of July 2014. Attracting approximately one million foreign tourists in just
one month (Loretta, 2014) it was without a doubt the major global sporting event of the year. Discussions about holding such an event in yet another
developing country where controversial from the start and with regard to the 2016 Olympic Games also held in Brazil, they still are.
In this essay I want to evaluate to what extent Brazil as a tourism destination benefitted from the World Cup– or not – and how this affects the

This can be in a positive way e.g. gaining of the knowledge but also in a negative way, such as staged authenticity. Furthermore, they can have positive
and negative environmental impacts, namely an improvement of infrastructure or littering. Lastly, there can be economical impacts (Page &
Connell, 2009). Although these can prove negative in the long term, most economical impacts are positive because the tourists come and spend money
at a destination.
If we take a look at the perspective of Brazilian tourism with regard to events such as the World Cup 2014, we can conclude that a lot of its success
depends on the Olympic Games of 2016. Ainsworth–Wells (2013) describes the preparation of Rio for the Olympic Games as rather positive: "If I
could draw a graph depicting Rio de Janeiro's trajectory and status against these factors as it prepares to host the 2016 Olympics it would currently be
somewhere in the middle, but heading in one direction – upwards" (Ainswort–Wells, 2013). Positive developments, such as the fact that the
accommodation sector is largely dominated by Brazilian companies or the renovation of port areas through public–private partnerships, can be
recognized. Yet one of the biggest concerns is the traffic. As there will not be enough time anymore to work on the underground metro system, the city
of Rio aims at revolutionizing the bus system. Taking into account the fact that during the World Cup 2014 the vast majority perceived their visit

Winter Games : The Evolution Of The Winter Olympics
From the time when, the Summer Olympics began, in 1896, the idea of a separate Winter Games had been debated. It appears that when the first
modern Olympics were being agreed upon, the organizers sought for winter sports as well, but there was difference as to the venues and events.
Meanwhile, from 1901 Sweden every 4 years, held the world's first organized winter games. The "Nordic Games" were conquered by Sweden,
Norway and Finland. The Scandinavians sought to retain the games on an amateur base and were solemn at that time that the Olympics were not. In
1908 at the London Olympics, held figure skating events as part of the Olympic program. Between those two events, the International Olympic
Committee contended long and hard about the likelihood of a performance of an Olympic Winter Games. The main disapproval to this idea were from
the Scandanavian countries since they didn't want their Nordic Games to be destabilized by Olympic Winter events. The Italians proposed such an
event in 1911, the Scandinavia fighting the idea of the Winter Olympics as it would weaken the Nordic Games, staged in Sweden in 1905, 1909 and
1913. The Italians recommended the Nordic Game be retitled the "Winter Olympics", but this thought didn't please the Scandinavians. The first
reawakening of the Olympic games arose in 1896 in Athens, Greece. In 1908, the games were hosted in Great Britain, figure skating appeared on the
program, and a man by the name of Panin won the first and only medal

Chariots Of Fire Research Paper
Even heard of the movie Chariots of Fire? I personally have never seen the full movie until I had to watch it for class. The movie Chariots of Fire is
about two determined young male runners that train for the 1924 Olympics in Paris. One man is a devoted Christian that runs for God, and refuses to
run on the Sabbath day. The other man is Jewish and just runs to win. The movie talks about the 1920's culture, different religions, and the Olympics.
Something that struck me about the movie Chariots of Fire was that the school was an all guy college. If there are any colleges that are all guys or all

The professors back in the 1920's wore judge capes; which is very different for what the professors wear today. Furthermore the guys wore suits
and ties, and the females wear flapper style dress. Something that really shocked me was that most girls wore hats, so that the couple could hide
their kiss; which is kind of the opposite of now days. Now days in movies and outside of movies people kiss in public and do not really care who is
around them or looking.
Overall no matter where the people went they had their formal wear on for formal dinner, church, to go to the movie theaters and even track meets.
For track meets the track uniform was long shorts, and a big shorts sleeve shirt. That is way different from the uniform these days. The uniform for
track these days are short shorts, and a tank top shirt, or a unitard for track.
One of the runners in the movie named Eric Liddell is a devoted Christian. Liddell compares faith with running a race, and runs because he feels His
pleasure. He wins for God, and he feels like it honors Him. Because of Liddell's religion he would not race in 100 meter dash that happened on a

personal drive and initiative brought about the inauguration of the modern Olympic Games in 1896 with the participation of 311 athletes from thirteen
countries, competing in nine sports. At first, the modern Games were limited to men. Women first competed in the Games in 1910, playing golf, but
real women 's participation only began in Paris in 1924 with the inclusion of women 's athletics in the program. Winter sports were brought into the
Olympic program through the organization of special winter Games, first held in France at Chamonix in 1924, with competitions in ice–hockey, speed
skating, figure–skating, and skiing. These are still the basic events of the winter program, with the addition of bobsled and toboggan races. The most
impressive event of the opening ceremony of the Games is the taking of the Olympic oaths. First a representative athlete from the host country,
holding a corner of the Olympic flag, takes the following oath on behalf of all the participants: "In the name of all competitors, I promise that we will

Olympic Games : The Winter Olympics
After having many decades of the beloved Olympic Games, people started think that maybe having a second type of Olympics would make the most
popular sports competition even more popular. The first Winter Olympics changed the image of the Olympic Games forever. The thrilling event of
"International Winter Sports Week" later became known as the firstWinter Olympic Games. The Ancient Grecian summer tradition was brought to the
winter for the first time in Chamonix, France on January 25, 1924. The event was a huge success and it became a tradition in the same manner as the
Summer Olympics. It was to be celebrated every four years. Having a Winter Olympics as well as a Summer Olympics gave more athletes the
opportunity to compete in the Olympic Games if their sport took place in winter weather conditions, like skiing or figure skating. The first Winter
Olympic Games was an immense event that started a tradition which came to be known as the "largest winter sports competition in the world".
Nearly 3,000 years ago in Ancient Greece is where the roots of the Olympic Games lie. Every four years in Olympia, on the western Peloponnese
peninsula, athletes would come together to compete in sporting events and honor the Greek god Zeus. The games continued in the same manner for
12 centuries until a Christian Roman emperor by the name of Emperor Theodosius I ordered for all "pagan" festivals to come to an end, which
included the Olympic Games. In 1894, a Frenchman by the name of Baron

Reinstatement of Softball Into the 2016 Olympics
"PLAY BALL!!" This is a saying that has been used for many years in softball as well as in baseball. Now, those two words will not be heard in the
Olympics for at least half a decade. Softball is a big part in the lives of many women and taking it out of the 2012 Olympics is crushing their dreams.
The sport should be reinstated in the 2016 Olympics because the sport will die if it is not, it gives young girls a dream, and it will greatly decrease the
amount of women participating in the Olympic Games. Softball has been in the Olympics since 1996 and now the International Olympic Committee
(IOC) has decided to take it out. Taking softball out of the Olympics cut the amount of funding to the USA team which means that... Show more

Jenae Leles, USA softball women's national team rookie says "it [is] a lot of young girls' dream to play softball further than college and into the
Olympics. [She] thinks they do need to get it back so the young girls can pursue their dreams. They need to get it back for them" (Players Dream).
The Olympics tied softball with baseball together and they thought it would be a good decision, but what they didn't put into perspective was that
baseball has the major league that pays their players millions of dollars a year and softball does not. They also should have put into perspective how
they crushed so many hopes and dreams. The International Olympic Committee had no idea what they were doing when they made the vote to cut the
sport; they were just thinking that it would be good for the Olympics to have something new. Now, because the IOC did not take the millions of girls
around the world's dreams in to consideration, they have broken these girls' hearts.
The International Olympic Committee was just trying to do the best to keep the Olympics interesting. The IOC thought that since softball has the PFX
and NPF leagues then the young girls will have a dream of playing for them instead of for the Olympics team. Denny states that "these girls have a

The Economic Impact of the Olympic Games
Abstract Since de Second World War , there has been a substantial increase in the range of events worldwide, varying from single day fetes and fairs to
major sporting and cultural festivals.
Special events are seen to have the ability to produce a wide range of significant economic and social benefits for communities and regions. In seeking
to understand the field of special events, I took as a case study the Olympic Games mega–event.

As well as providing opportunities to increase direct expenditure at a destination, they can also contribute substantially to a destination's range of tourist
attractions, facilitate media coverage for the destination, promote awareness of the destination for future visitation and lead to the construction of new
facilities and infrastructure. The prominence given to special events by governments and tourism marketing organisations has resulted in some
destinations seeking to specialise in the creation and hosting of special events. There is also a trend towards the construction of 'mega–venues' catering
for conventions, trade shows, art and sporting events.
The proliferation of events, and event–producing agencies, has resulted in the need for the performance of events to be evaluated more stringently.
Event managers and planners are now being called upon more often to prepare comprehensive post–event evaluations with detailed accounts of the
impacts of the event. As many special events require financial assistance from governments and businesses in order to be staged, post–event evaluations
are required by such agencies that need to assess the value of their investments. Evaluation is also required by event organisers who need to justify their
activities to a diverse set of stakeholders, which includes sponsors, funding agencies, economic and tourism development agencies, special interest
groups, and the

"Chariots of Fire" was a powerful and emotionally involving drama, which had been seen as one of the most successful movies in British film

Abrahams was "a Jewish Englishman who wanted the world to accept that Jews were not inferior" (Chariots of Fire, Family Christian), whereas Eric
Liddell was a serious Christian Scotsman believed that God made him run fast for a purpose, so running was to honor and glorify God. According to
New York Times, it stated that "Eric Liddell, who says at one point to explain why he runs, 'God made me devout and– He made me fast.'" This

Hosting The Olympics Game, Is It Worth It? Essay
HOSTING THE OLYMPICS GAME, IS IT WORTH IT?
Introduction
The Olympic games were firstly introduced in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece, as a religious celebration to honor Zeus, a god in Ancient Greek
mythology. It was a series of athletic competitions where representatives from each city–state and then compete to become a winner. Nowadays, the
modern Olympic games have become one of the most prestigious events in the world. There are thousands of participants and athletes come from
hundreds of countries all over the world to compete in more than 50 sports. The first modern Games was held in Athens, Greece, in 1896 and then
followed by the winter games that were started in 1924. Each game is held quadrennial with a two–year difference between summer and winter games.
The Olympic games are managed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and there is also a representative committee in several countries
around the world which is called National Olympic Games Committee (NOC).
Just like the others sports events, such as World Cup, the Olympic games are held in different cities and different countries. So that there must be a
special procedure to select the host city for the games, which is through an open–bidding process that is started seven years prior to the game. However,
the bidding process literally starts earlier, it might be eight or nine years prior, since there will be also 'domestic competition' within a country to select

Morgan Mitchell "The only reason why I am doing all this is because I am running fast. If I am not running fast, it's not going to happen."– Morgan
Mitchell, 2016. No need to worry about running fast, Morgan. I think you've pretty much covered that one. As bubbly as she is fast, Morgan Mitchell,
age 21, is following in the footsteps of her idol, Cathy Freeman, and running in the elite 400m and 4x400m relay. Whilst not always associating with
her outstanding running ability, she was always known for her incredible athleticism. As a kid, Mitchell used her inherited skill from her
basketball–star father, Walter, and excelled within the game of netball. She was described as a "talented player, who was always full of energy", and
pursued the sport all the way into the under 19 Australian netball squad. It was in the same year that she made the change to athletics and, as a result,

positions, so that each athlete is running equal distance, and those who false start twice, or obstruct another runner from moving forward will be
disqualified. As a 400m runner, you require considerable speed endurance, in order to maintain a high intensity over a considerable distance. Whilst
400m isn't regarded as a long distance race, it requires a much similar approach, as most athletes choose to go hard in the first 100m, maintain and

Abraham puts his faith in the science of sport and Eric relies on god and his previous experiences. Later, Sam Mussabini becomes Abraham's
authorities figure. If we look at ethics, the study of morality, in the beginning of the movie, Abraham seems overconfident. For example, when
Abraham sees Liddell running for the first time, he thinks he is going to win because Liddell's unorthodox running style of flailing arms is no
competition for him, but he loses that match. As Liddell boards the boat for Paris, he hears shocking news of his Olympic race on Sunday. Liddell
refuses to run on Sunday, and upon authority's requests he replied, "I won't run on Sabbath and that's final." He selflessly refuses to forgo his
principles and ethics. Aesthetically, winning the races is dignified and pleasing for Abraham. When he talks to his girlfriend, Sybil, he says, "I don't
run to take beatings, I run to win, if I can't win, I won't run." On the other hand, Liddell is a sporting hero, his name was famous throughout the

unavoidable in the crowded running of the competitors. Even though he was far behind, this competitor leaped back to the track and continued to race

ridiculous. Nonetheless, this man ran at such an astonishing pace that the spectators were goggle–eyed and on their feet, mesmerized by the unfolding...

Chariots Of Fire Essay
Chariots of Fire presents two main characters that are vastly different from one another. Eric Liddel is a religious man who values his beliefs and runs
for God's pleasure. Harold Abrahams is a determined Jewish man who runs to prove that he is more than what others see. The director purposely films
Chariots of Fire by presenting characterization in Abrahams' character by using different dialogue and internal action, and in Eric's character by using
different external action and the reactions of other characters towards him. In Chariots of Fire, the director portrays the life of two contrasting
characters that both run for completely different reasons. Harold Abrahams is one of these dedicated runners and runs against jewish prejudice.

Eric's characterization is shown through the use of his external actions and how other characters react towards him. Eric's strong values and
beliefs set him apart from other characters, such as Abrahams, in the film. The external action of a character is the most obvious form of
characterization. This type of characterization works with Eric's character because his actions, large and small, say a lot about his character in the
film. Eric's religion says that Sunday, the day of Sabbath, should be a day of rest and no sports. Although Eric's race is scheduled on a Sunday he
refuses to run due to his beliefs. This action of refusing to run emphasizes his character's dedication to religion and to God. Eric's purpose in running
for God results in people respecting him and admiring him. His sister, Jennie, admires him due to his missionary work and at the end of the film she
believes that his running brings God pleasure. When other characters talk to Eric, such as other athletes, they respect his beliefs and values. The
admiration for Eric from all these characters is obvious at the conclusion of the film when his victory is so celebrated. The emphasis on Eric's beliefs
and values further differentiates himself from

Another way that the people that are pro eSports being a sport facilitate their argument is their use of statistics dealing with competitive gaming's
growth. In a interview with TechCrunch, Sundance DiGiovanni, the CEO of the MLG, the largest tournament provider in America, said" MLG also
told TechCrunch that it saw a 600% growth in its audience in the past three years, and now has an advertising completion rate of more than 90%."()
This statement is good because it gives clear statistics without stating an opinion or disregarding others beliefs. While the main argument for the pro
eSports becoming a sport side was growth and similar dedication and mental fortitude, the community that is against eSports being considered a
traditional sport are arguing about the physical aspects of gaming. Colleen Greene, wellness coordinator for MFit, the health promotion division of the
U–M Health System says, in a paper by Katie Vloet, "Virtual gaming is no replacement for real exercise," Greene says. "It's a place to start, though.
Kids can have fun doing it, they can feel a little better about actually trying the sport or activity."(Vloet)This argument is backed up by her specialty in
health and is further validated by her saying that it can be used as a starting point to real exercise showing that she is considerate of other peoples

Urban Politics Of The Brazil
Urban politics of poverty in Brazil have been highly publicized over the past few years. In large part, this is due to capital spending on the creation
and renovation of stadiums for the World Cup in 2014 and the Summer Olympics in 2016. Imagine waking up every morning and walking outside to
slum–like conditions. Right next to those slum–like conditions are brand new athletic stadiums that will primarily used for about a month. It must be
infuriating seeing public money be spent on flashy buildings, meanwhile, homes, parks, schools, and more are not given nearly enough funding that is
required for complacency. Yet, much of what an individual sees may be interpreted differently. These rundown favelas impact are what people call

Urban politics in Brazil happen to be the exact reason why housing, transportation, inner–city crime, and more happen to occur in the favelas. Brazil is
suffering from inconsistent political agendas which ultimately, has created collective effort by citizens to riot against uneven development. All
throughout Brazil they built new state of the art stadiums, meanwhile there was a massive issue of poverty occurring. Favelas in Brazil can be found
throughout the country. Most famously, Rochina, a favela inRio De Janeiro sits massively entrenched on a hill in between a mountain range. Just
below Rochina lies Rio's developed downtown area. MaracanГЈ, a local stadium in Brazil that was subject to much criticism, just miles away from
Rochina was renovated heavily to be the standard for all stadiums. Accord to NPR, further outcry embellished when a brand new stadium in Manaus
was built. Manaus is located in the middle of the Amazonas state (in the Amazon Rainforest) and it is only accessible by boat or plane. That is how
far out of the way this city is. Yet, Brazil decided to invest in a brand new stadium in the middle of the Amazon Rainforest rather than invest in its

unlikely that this occurs quickly if at all. Amazonas is amongst the poorest states in Brazil, which infers that

Indoor and Beach Volleyball have gained immense popularity over the years. They're both very fun sports that anyone at any age can enjoy. Although
most people would think both sports are the same, the truth is they are very different. The environment, rules of play and the collegiate opportunities

Muscular Christianity Is Viewed As Courage And Confidence
Muscular Christianity is viewed as courage and confidence one can have. It is seen through a particular setting such as in a sport like a football. It
allows people to have faith and hope in themselves that they can achieve in something no matter how much criticism they endure. According to
Putney's "God's in the Gym" Muscular Christianity is an idea that lets people honor or celebrate their bodies. Many hoped that physical experience
might increase release from body rejecting and social limitations. Although sports were denied in some religions due its belief that it would take
away peoples' devotions of their spiritual being, some people were in favor of it. Although Muscular Christianity was a concept that people had by
praying to God to be better at a sport, this idea is currently dying down. There are some contemporary examples that show Muscular Christianity still
exists today but without religiously relying on and the use of God. People that play popular sports such as football players, female champions, the still
growing YMCA, and the striving athletes in the Olympic games all have faith in themselves and do not need God. They all have shown great
achievement in their field with the help of Muscular Christianity without the need of God's faith. However, the movie "Chariots of Fire" shows an
immense amount of Muscular Christianity but is not considered a contemporary example of it due to the religion limitations portrayed.

Factors that Shaped the Modern Olympic Movement
DBQ Essay
Some factors that shaped the modern Olympic movement from 1892 to 2002 were the increased participation of women in the games due to women's
suffrage, the rising nationalism and superiority over competitors that took place, and the increase in trade and funding.
The modern Olympic movement was shaped through the soaring advocation of women's rights (2, 8). An anonymous photographer (#2), in the 1908
Olympic games held in Great Britain where only 2 percent of women participated in the games, presents a photograph of Sybil Newall, a female
British competitor at the games, and advocates women participating in the games. This photographer might have this view because he or she is a
feminist that took place in the women suffrage movement and is baffled that solely two percent of athletes were women, and is urging the Olympics to
make a great change. Hassiva Boulmerka (#8), an Algerian competitor that engaged in the 1992 games held in Spain where 29 percent of the athletes
were women, believes that every woman has the ability of becoming an athlete, and must strengthen their mind and conscious, not just their body, to
overcome these social challenges. Boulmerka, as a woman participant, may have this belief because she has underwent these obstacles as well, and
wishes to motivate women in Spain to have the will and determination to overcome them and become a female athlete like herself. A good additional

If the Friends used the Old Sort Site warehouse, with a small external storage site, the savings could grow to approximately $5,600/year.
Wondering why the Friends did not supply their own tables, I asked several other vol– unteers about the subject while at the 2016 Booksale. The most
common reason was a lack of storage facilities, coupled with the costs (manpower and financial) associated with transporting them. In this report I

One possible storage site for these tables is in the Friends' Old Sort Site (1350 NE 3rd St.) When I volunteered at 2016's Move Out, there was enough

The Basic Difference Between The Ancient And Modern...
The Olympic Games are an international sports festival that began in ancient Greece. The original Greek games were staged every fourth year for
several hundred years, until they were abolished in the early Christian era. The revival of the Olympic Games took place in 1896, and since then they

Perhaps the basic difference between the ancient and modern Olympics is that the former was the ancient Greeks' way of saluting their gods, whereas
the modern Games are a manner of saluting the athletic talents of citizens of all nations. The original Olympics featured competition in music,

first held at Chamonix, France. In 1980 about 1,600 athletes from 38 nations competed at Lake Placid, N.Y., in a program that included Alpine and
Nordic skiing, biathlon, ice hockey, figure skating and speed skating, bobsled, and luge. The Summer and Winter Games were traditionally held in the
same year, but because of the increasing size of both Olympics, the Winter Games were shifted to a different schedule after

Most People Know About Or Have At Least Heard About The
Most people know about or have at least heard about the winter and summer Olympic Games that take place around the world every 4 years. The
events held at the Olympics exclude the deaf community due to the use of sound to queue the athletes. Due to this issue in 1924 the deaf community
started and held their first Deaflympics, exclusively for only the deaf community. The early pioneers of the international deaf sports movement were
EugГЁne Rubens–Alcais of France and Antoine Dresse of Belgium. EugГЁne Rubens–Alcais was the founder of the Deaflympics and the first
president. He himself who was deaf was just a normal person, who work in automechanics and was very good on a bike. He loved to work with the
deaf community and after witnessing the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Now the Deaflympics are a global event. Even though it is a global event the United States has only held two summer events which were in
Washington, DC 1965 and Los Angeles 1995 and, two winter event which were in Lake Placid 1975 and Salt Lake City 2007. That is half the amount
of times the United States has hosted the Olympic games, that currently standing at 8. Throughout the years what is now called Deaflympics went by
many other names. It was originally called International Games for the Deaf or International Silent Games, this lasted from 1924–1965. From 1966 to
1999 the event went by the World Games for the Deaf, or sometimes called World Silent Games. It was not until 2001 that these events got the
name Deaflympics. A lot of people called it the Deaf Olympics by mistake, but the true name is Deaflympics. There are different levels of being
deaf, meaning not every deaf person can participate in the Deaflympics. For a player to qualify to participate they must have hearing loss at least
55db in their better ear. Any device that helps one hear is not allowed to be used at the game. This helps keep everyone on the same level and keeps
the games as fair as possible. In the Olympics the athletes are given the "go" by sounds, such as someone shooting a gun in the air or a referee
blowing a whistle. That brings the question to mind, how do they go about giving the deaf athletes the "go"? Well the answer is interesting. They use
non audible signals such as, blinking

The Ancient And Modern Olympics
Have you ever wondered where the idea of the Olympics has started? The Ancient and Modern Olympics are a turning point in history. The
Olympics played a huge role in society, and was different yet similar both in ancient times and modern time, but had stopped for a while, made a
comeback, and has started a breakthrough in the world of sports. Events like the Olympics brings each country together all supporting each other. It
combines passion with hard work and pride to compete in the Olympics. Here is how the Olympics has evolved and made a breakthrough. First of all,
during ancient times the Olympics were different from what you see today. The first ancient Olympics dates back to 776BC. The Olympics are named
after the place they originated,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first modern Olympics was held in Athens, Greece in 1896. There were 280 competitors from 13 nations. All competitors were male. Other than in
Ancient Greece women were allowed to watch because the male competitors were clothed. There were forty–three events being competed in. The
events include track and field, gymnastics, swimming, wrestling, cycling, tennis, and weightlifting, shooting and fencing. Judges are members of
respective International Sports Federations, which are non–governmental organizations recognized by the International Olympic Committee for being in
charge of a sport on an international level. Later many sporting events were added and all people were allowed to compete. The official symbol of
the modern Games was made with a white background and with five interlocking colored rings, representing the continents of North and South
America, Asia, Africa, Europe and Australia. The Winter Olympics debuted in 1924 and included such events as figure skating, ice hockey,
bobsledding and the biathlon. In the Modern Olympics wins get either a gold medal (for 1st place), a bronze medal (for 2nd place), and a bronze
medal (for 3rd place). Athletes can get money for placing. Different countries offer different amounts of money to the athletes, and the winnings
actually vary greatly. Some countries, like the United Kingdom, don't offer money to the medalist at all. However, in the United States of America
Gold medal winners receive $25,000 before taxes. Silver medal winners receive $15,000, and bronze winners receive $10,000. For team sports like
gymnastics, the winnings are not split among members each athlete receives the winning amount. Eighty years later, when the 2004 Summer Olympics
returned to Athens for the first time in more than a century, nearly 11,000 athletes from a record 201 countries competed. In a gesture that joined both
ancient and modern Olympic traditions, the

The Revolution Of Rio De Janeiro
Introduction In 1565, the Portuguese discovered SГЈo SebastiГЈo do Rio de Janeiro, and was named after St. Sebastian, who was the namesake and
patron of the Portuguese Monarch D. SebastiГЈo. In the late 1600s, the Bandeirantes, fortune hunters, discovered gold and diamonds nearly Rio de
Janeiro. Therefore, the city became more convenient for the Portuguese exportations. During 1800s, many Portuguese fled to Rio in order to escape
Napoleon's invasion of Portugal. There were hundreds of noblemen who were simply homeless because of their sudden arrival in the city. Also,
during the exile of numerous Portuguese men into the city, an influx of 145,000 of African slaves arrived in the capital of Rio. By the year of 1840,
the rate of African slavery increased up to 220,000 people. In 1822, Prince Pedro declared the independence of Brazil, and kept Rio de Janeiro as the
country's capital. Early in the 1900s, the centre of the city was developing; the first tunnel in the capital was built under the mountains of Botafogo
and Copacanaba, and electric streetcars travelled from north to south of the urban. At the same time, the population of Rio was growing, and the
amount of landscapes were getting limited, therefore the city started to shift from north to south. Between 1960 and 1975, Rio de Janeiro was
removed as the capital of the country for some political reasons, and became one of Rio de Janeiro's states. Nowadays, Rio de Janeiro is the second
most populous city of Brazil, and the

Comparison Of Eric Liddell And Harold Abraham In Chariots...

  • 1. Comparison of Eric Liddell and Harold Abraham in Chariots... Have you ever wondered how two athletes with two different faiths can change their own lives by their ways of living? Eric Liddell was a Scottish runner and a faithful Christian. On the other hand, Harold Abraham was a British runner and a Jew who struggled to change other people's thought of Jews. Both of these men ran in the 1924 Olympics for different purposes. The movie "Chariots of Fire" showed how Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams differed from one another. Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams were different in their faith, economic status, and their motivations. First, Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams differed in their faith. Eric Liddell was a faithful Christian. As a faithful Christian, Eric Liddell frequently attended church on Sundays. Not only did he attend church, but he also preached in different churches. The movie ("Chariots of Fire", Hugh Hudson) showed a scene where he was preaching and reading a passage from the Bible. On the other hand, Harold Abrahams was of the Jewish faith. For instance, Jews do not eat pork because in the Old Testament the Israelites were commanded to abstain from it. Proof that Harold Abrahams followed this belief was seen in the movie when it showed that his girlfriend Sybil order pork in the restaurant and Harold felt first offended, and then amused by her mistake. In nineteen twenty–four Jews were frequently disrespected regarded as an inferior race. An example of this was when Rodgers, the receptionist in Harold's dormitory, called ... When I Came To Australia Essay Megan Cordova Zamora Economics 4th period 3 March 2017 History of Australia Australia has come a long way to where they are today since their journey began back in 1788, from penal colony all the way to its own island continent. As time went on slowly, there began to be six different settlements. All starting off with: Van Diemen's Land, WesternAustralia, South Australia, Victoria, Queensland, and Northern Territory. With many changes, some have become states while others have stayed territories. Even though this land was thought to be found by the Europeans, it wasn't. Australia was first found by the Aborigines. They were thought to have come to Australia about 50,000 years ago during the Ice Age. Then it all began, the gold rush ... There were many losses to them along with many that had come back wounded. Finally once everything came back together came another war, WWII. This one you could say that Australia was quite stronger and maybe more ready for. The country contributed much more to their allies in this time, and the men who came back, came back with pride for their country. Even though they may have come back strong there sure was many wars that they weren't expecting. For example, the Colonial Period, Sudan March, Boer War, Occupation of Japan, Korean War, Malayan Emergency, and the Indonesian Confrontation. Along with the recent wars like Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iraq Second Gulf War, and now peacekeeping .Even though war can be tough, natural disasters can be just as tough(australia.com). Australia sure has been struck by many natural disasters and weren't quite expecting them or just may have not quite been prepared for them. Australia has been through such like a drought all the way to cyclones from the ocean. Australia may also have fires such as bushfire, floods, heatwaves. This has all come to the Australians causing trouble putting them into the face of adversity. • 4. Essay on The Olympics: Politics, Scandal, and Corruption ABSTRACT: The purity of the Olympics has been smeared by scandal, corruption, boycotts, political disputes and even acts of terrorism. Sadly, politics have taken control of the Olympics and turned it into a political and money–making extravaganza. Olympic boycotts became a way for countries to protest each other. Hitler tried to use the Games to prove his belief of racial superiority. Wars interfered with the Olympics. Bloodshed even covered the Olympics, in the 1972 Munich Games where terrorists killed eleven Israeli Olympic members. Unfortunately, throughout Olympic history, politics have overshadowed the true focus of the Games. They were "intended to unite the countries of the world through friendly competition" not segregate them ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Greeks had to suspend legal disputes and postpone capital punishment sentences until completion of the Games. Early Greek politicians took advantage of the Games by using it as a tool to promote their city's importance (Hellenic World). Politics started to overcome the Early Olympics when the Romans took over Greece. They not only restructured the stadiums, but also the Games themselves. These new Games began to greatly stray from their origins until Emperor Theodosius I, being disgusted with the games, cancel them in 393 AD. The Olympics remained canceled until 1896 when Pierre de Coubertin fought to start the Modern Olympic Games. He did so with the intention of promoting peace, unity, and sportsmanship through athletic competition. He knew politics would be a part of the Games, but not to the extent that they have become. Over time, politics has taken over to make the games into so much more than friendly competition. Politics has been evident almost from the beginning of the modern Olympics. At the 1908 London Olympics, American flag bearers refused to lower their flag in front of the British monarchy, which the British saw as a sign of disrespect. The Russians also tried to prevent their enemy, the Finns, from showing their flag. In the early Olympics, wars were suspended during the Games. Just the opposite happened in 1916 when the Games were suspended because of World War I. The politicians pushed this even further when Germany, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Doping is a Fool’s Game All athletes of all sports on a professional level must be required to undergo drug testing for performance enhancing drugs prior to participating in any sporting event to ensure an equal level playing field for all competing athletes, no matter the sport. Furthermore, performance enhancing drugs are illegal and must remain this way in order to keep fairness in the competitive world of sports. The bottom line is that athletes should not be able to do performance enhancing drugs and continue to be allowed to performance in these sports. The unfairness of doing these drugs does not allow for a fair game. Ultimately, these cheating athletes are superior in the field and dominate the other athletes that do not take steroids and how can you call that a fair game when the athletes are not equal in performance due to a enhancing drug. To further the argument, performance enhancing drugs must remain against the law to protect the athlete's health and well being. If today's athletes are going to be so careless and take these drugs, we as a society must step in and take control of what these athletes are putting in their bodies. And if they continue to break the law by taking performance enhancing drugs, then they must suffer the consequences by possibly being banned from the sport for an extended period of time or a lifetime ban, which is would a result of their salaries and livelihood, endorsements and possible prison time. • 6. Politics in Sports The Olympic Games are a worldwide competition that brings people of different cultures and backgrounds into one united area where they compete in their specialized sports. These events, however, are not purely entertainment like they should have been. Today's societies are more dependent on politics and therefore so are sports and the athletes competing, sometimes even without their own will. In various occasions across the world politics was the main reason for athletes to withdraw from athletic events such as the world cup, Olympics, and any other worldwide or region wide competitions. On the other hand politics sometimes are the reason that some teams re–establish themselves and get back into the world scene in sports. This two sided... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Mexico City Olympics in 1968 was a different yet similar incident where racism, closely related to anti–Semitism in the way society views the rights of people of all races and kinds. United States athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos, African American males, competed in the 200 meter race and won first and third place respectively. When they went on the podium the men didn't wear their shoes revealing black socks, they wore black track uniforms and when were given their medals they revealed black gloves on their hands while putting their fists in the air as an act of representing the Black Power movement. Later on the two athletes were banned from the Olympic village because of their unfit political statement to the apolitical athletic forum the Olympics are supposed to be. This statement created controversy that again stirred the athletic event away from its task of entertainment into a worldwide argument. Politics again have been a disruption to the long awaited athletic event. The Olympic committee had done the right thing by making an example of these athletes and the committees' long run efforts to exclude politics from worldwide events; however, it never acted on the Nazi salutes that the Germans used in the Berlin Olympics. Some may argue that it was their country's national salute, but we all know today that it had a political background behind it that shouldn't have been ignored. More specifically, warring times, changes to social structures, and economic activity that varies by country have been the overall leading factors that have shaped the Olympics over the years. The Olympics have shown over the decades that they can be affected by political conflict. However, it seems that this is the point of the Olympics, to illustrate national pride, by competition. However, the dramatic increase in the fees paid to broadcast Atlanta's games illustrates the time of peace after the Cold War ended, with over 800 million dollars being given to broadcast the games(9). Finally, the Olympic games are altered by the diverse and changing social structures in the world. For instance, in 1908 a photograph of British competitor Sybil Newall shooting her bow was found on newspapers across England(2). Whether this photograph was staged to sell newspapers or not, it cannot be denied that this photograph indicates the beginning of women's movement, which was obviously an important issue during this time in the world. With more leniency being given to women during this time, they were eventually being allowed to compete in the competitive events, though only 2% of the athletes were women. This factor also continues to show during the 1992 games held in Spain, where by then 29% of women were competing. Hassiba Boulmerka was an Algerian competitor during this time and spoke in an interview about her critics, and how being the first Algerian to win an Olympic title did not depend on her gender, but simply on her strength in her mind and in body. Boulmerka was heavily criticized by Muslim groups in Algeria for wearing shorts as she ran in the events. The games serve as a gathering for hundreds of competing nations, with each country showcasing their best athletes. However, the games were not always how they are today and have changed dramatically throughout the years. The first recorded Olympics were held in 776 B.C. However, it is believed that the games had been going on much earlier. It is said that Heracles, the son of Zeus and Alcmene, was the founding father of the Olympic games (The Olympic Games 1). The Olympics essentially began as a religious ceremony honoring the Greek god Zeus. The celebration was a sporting event held in Olympia, where the title of the "Olympics" was originated. The festival occurred every four years in the summer and featured a series of athletic contests. Many of which are very different from the sports played today. The games played during the Olympics in ancient Greece over three thousand years ago consisted of running and equestrian events, javelin, wrestling and boxing. Horse drawn chariots were often used in equestrian events. Over time new sports were added. As culture changed and the games became international, sports such as chariot races were no longer a part of the modernized Olympics. The combination between wrestling and boxing was a sport known as pankration. However the sport included no rules. This has changed with the introduction of the modern ... • 14. Math and Graph Models Behind the Olympic Paul Vault Jump Introduction Every 4 years, the Olympic games is a major event around the world. International athletes come together to represent their own country at a sport. A gold medal is given to the winner of each game. This math internal assessment aims to consider the trends of the wining men gold medalist's pole vault height from 1932 to 2008, and predicting 1940 and 1944 record, when the Olympic games were not held due to the world war. Data – Height Record 1932–2008 The table below shows the men pole vault gold medalists at various Olympic games between 1932 and 2008. Table 1: the winning heights of men's pole vault in Olympic games for years between 1932 and 2008. (Excluding 1940 and 1944) Year193219361948195219561960196419681972... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The war, however, stopped the improvement of the heights record. Therefore, we could deduce that the depression between 1936 and 1948 was due to lack of training due to the war. When the games resumed in 1948, the athletes started to progress their record once again. As you can see above, we could refine our model, disregarding the 1932 and 1936 record. Graph 5: Graph of winning heights (m) against years since 1948 This refined model is better representation of data than graph 1 and 2 even if the line does not pass through every point. Passing through point increased from 2 to 3 (4, 52 and 56) and majority of points are very close to the line. It is true that some points, such as point 16 and 20 quite far from the line, but these points can be disregarded in this model, as the line is touching the following point 24. This gives the new linear equation y=0.0264x+4.4338 However, even though refined graph has better equation than those of past one, there are some limitations with using linear equation to determine the graph. Since a linear graph increases infinitely, and as humans have restraints to achieve to record, their winning height can't keep increasing at this rate. It is not sustainable. Natural Logarithm Model After considering the limitation of linear function and graph, I have discovered applying any model of equation that has an infinite increase range, such as quadratic or exponential, is unrealistic, since the

Furthermore, they can have positive and negative environmental impacts, namely an improvement of infrastructure or littering. Lastly, there can be economical impacts (Page & Connell, 2009). Although these can prove negative in the long term, most economical impacts are positive because the tourists come and spend money at a destination. If we take a look at the perspective of Brazilian tourism with regard to events such as the World Cup 2014, we can conclude that a lot of its success depends on the Olympic Games of 2016. Ainsworth–Wells (2013) describes the preparation of Rio for the Olympic Games as rather positive: "If I could draw a graph depicting Rio de Janeiro's trajectory and status against these factors as it prepares to host the 2016 Olympics it would currently be somewhere in the middle, but heading in one direction – upwards" (Ainswort–Wells, 2013). Positive developments, such as the fact that the accommodation sector is largely dominated by Brazilian companies or the renovation of port areas through public–private partnerships, can be recognized. Yet one of the biggest concerns is the traffic. As there will not be enough time anymore to work on the underground metro system, the city of Rio aims at revolutionizing the bus system. • 18. Winter Games : The Evolution Of The Winter Olympics From the time when, the Summer Olympics began, in 1896, the idea of a separate Winter Games had been debated. It appears that when the first modern Olympics were being agreed upon, the organizers sought for winter sports as well, but there was difference as to the venues and events. Meanwhile, from 1901 Sweden every 4 years, held the world's first organized winter games. The "Nordic Games" were conquered by Sweden, Norway and Finland. The Scandinavians sought to retain the games on an amateur base and were solemn at that time that the Olympics were not. In 1908 at the London Olympics, held figure skating events as part of the Olympic program. Between those two events, the International Olympic Committee contended long and hard about the likelihood of a performance of an Olympic Winter Games. The main disapproval to this idea were from the Scandanavian countries since they didn't want their Nordic Games to be destabilized by Olympic Winter events. The Italians proposed such an event in 1911, the Scandinavia fighting the idea of the Winter Olympics as it would weaken the Nordic Games, staged in Sweden in 1905, 1909 and 1913. The Italians recommended the Nordic Game be retitled the "Winter Olympics", but this thought didn't please the Scandinavians. • 26. Morgan Mitchell Biography Morgan Mitchell "The only reason why I am doing all this is because I am running fast. If I am not running fast, it's not going to happen."– Morgan Mitchell, 2016. No need to worry about running fast, Morgan. I think you've pretty much covered that one. As bubbly as she is fast, Morgan Mitchell, age 21, is following in the footsteps of her idol, Cathy Freeman, and running in the elite 400m and 4x400m relay. Whilst not always associating with her outstanding running ability, she was always known for her incredible athleticism. As a kid, Mitchell used her inherited skill from her basketball–star father, Walter, and excelled within the game of netball. She was described as a "talented player, who was always full of energy", and pursued the sport all the way into the under 19 Australian netball squad. It was in the same year that she made the change to athletics and, as a result, competed in her first World Championship in Barcelona. Mitchell insists she has a torn love between... A typical 400m race involves an entire lap of a standard running track, and requires each athlete to run in separate lanes. The race begins with runners in staggered positions, so that each athlete is running equal distance, and those who false start twice, or obstruct another runner from moving forward will be disqualified. As a 400m runner, you require considerable speed endurance, in order to maintain a high intensity over a considerable distance. Whilst 400m isn't regarded as a long distance race, it requires a much similar approach, as most athletes choose to go hard in the first 100m, maintain and build up the pace during the middle 200m and use whatever is left in the tank to drive it home in the final ... For example, when Abraham sees Liddell running for the first time, he thinks he is going to win because Liddell's unorthodox running style of flailing arms is no competition for him, but he loses that match. As Liddell boards the boat for Paris, he hears shocking news of his Olympic race on Sunday. Liddell refuses to run on Sunday, and upon authority's requests he replied, "I won't run on Sabbath and that's final." He selflessly refuses to forgo his principles and ethics. Aesthetically, winning the races is dignified and pleasing for Abraham. When he talks to his girlfriend, Sybil, he says, "I don't run to take beatings, I run to win, if I can't win, I won't run." Right out of the blocks, near the very start of the race, one of the runners was badly knocked down, and in a quarter–mile race at such a high level of competition, fractions of a second determine the winner. Anyone knocked down is quite simply out of the race. But accidents like this are sometimes unavoidable in the crowded running of the competitors. Even though he was far behind, this competitor leaped back to the track and continued to race with all–out speed and effort. Eric Liddel is a religious man who values his beliefs and runs for God's pleasure. Harold Abrahams is a determined Jewish man who runs to prove that he is more than what others see. The director purposely films Chariots of Fire by presenting characterization in Abrahams' character by using different dialogue and internal action, and in Eric's character by using different external action and the reactions of other characters towards him. This type of characterization works with Eric's character because his actions, large and small, say a lot about his character in the film. Eric's religion says that Sunday, the day of Sabbath, should be a day of rest and no sports. Although Eric's race is scheduled on a Sunday he refuses to run due to his beliefs. This action of refusing to run emphasizes his character's dedication to religion and to God. Eric's purpose in running for God results in people respecting him and admiring him. • 33. Muscular Christianity Is Viewed As Courage And Confidence Muscular Christianity is viewed as courage and confidence one can have. It is seen through a particular setting such as in a sport like a football. It allows people to have faith and hope in themselves that they can achieve in something no matter how much criticism they endure. According to Putney's "God's in the Gym" Muscular Christianity is an idea that lets people honor or celebrate their bodies. Many hoped that physical experience might increase release from body rejecting and social limitations. Although sports were denied in some religions due its belief that it would take away peoples' devotions of their spiritual being, some people were in favor of it. Although Muscular Christianity was a concept that people had by praying to God to be better at a sport, this idea is currently dying down. There are some contemporary examples that show Muscular Christianity still exists today but without religiously relying on and the use of God. People that play popular sports such as football players, female champions, the still growing YMCA, and the striving athletes in the Olympic games all have faith in themselves and do not need God. They all have shown great achievement in their field with the help of Muscular Christianity without the need of God's faith. The modern Olympic movement was shaped through the soaring advocation of women's rights (2, 8). An anonymous photographer (#2), in the 1908 Olympic games held in Great Britain where only 2 percent of women participated in the games, presents a photograph of Sybil Newall, a female British competitor at the games, and advocates women participating in the games.
