ugly daughter, Rani…

2. …as much as she hated her lovely step-
daughter, Lila. The woman made Lila all the
hardest tasks in the house and the girl never
complained.

3. One day, the stepmother sent Lila
to the well to get water.
Page 3

4. There she met an old lady who asked her
for a drink. Lila served the old woman as
though she were a queen.

5. Actually, the old woman was a fairy in
disguise who was so deeply touched by Lila’s
kindness that she gave the girl an unusual gift:

gems fell out of her mouth.

7. The stepmother was dreadfully envious of
Lila’s good fortune that she immediately sent
Rani to the well so that she too could be given
the same gift.

But when she asked for a drink, Rani replied,
“If you want a drink, get it yourself”.

9. “You are most unkind,” said the fairy. “For that,
I will give you a different reward”.
