5. DOTA 2
GENRE: Multiplayer Online Battle Arena
Dota 2 is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game in a three-dimensional environment,
presented from an oblique high-angle perspective. The player commands one of 110 controllable
character "Heroes". Each Hero begins the match at level one and becomes more powerful by
accumulating experience points through combat, thereby leveling up to the maximum level of
twenty-five. With every level gained the player either selects a new ability for their Hero to learn
or enhance their general statistics. Each Hero's method of combat is influenced by its primary
property: Strength, Agility, or Intelligence.

6. GAMEPLAY:
Each match of Dota 2 takes place on a functionally symmetrical map that features the strongholds of two warring
factions, the Radiant and the Dire. The Radiant is based at the southwest corner of the map, while the Dire is based at
the northeast corner; the two sides are divided by a river that runs perpendicular to the central lane. These factions are
defended by up to five players. In each stronghold is a critical structure called the "Ancient", a fountain that provide
health and lesser structures. These bases are connected by three paths, referred to as "lanes"—two run alongside the
edges of the map, while one runs directly between the two bases. The lanes are guarded by defensive towers, as well as
autonomous characters called "creeps", which periodically spawn in groups and travel along the lanes, attacking enemies
they encounter. Featured across the map are hostile characters referred to as "neutrals", which are not aligned to either
faction and are primarily located in the forests (primarily referred to as the "jungle" in the game, hence the term "jungler"
for one who attacks neutral creeps in the jungle). Located in a tarn on the Dire side of the east part of the river is a
neutral creep "boss" called "Roshan", who typically requires multiple team members to kill and drops the powerful item
"Aegis of Immortality", and significant amounts of gold and experience.
7. PROFESSIONAL COMPETITION:
The International (TI) is an annual electronic sports Dota 2 championship tournament hosted by Valve Corporation, the game's
developer. Sixteen teams are given invitations to compete in the tournament. The first tournament took place in Cologne, Germany at
Gamescom from August 17–21, 2011 and was held shortly after the reveal of Dota 2, with a total prize pot of $1.6 million and a grand
prize of one million dollars. The second International took place from August 31–September 2, 2012 at Benaroya Hall in Seattle,
Washington and retained the same $1.6 million prize structure. For the third International, again at Benaroya Hall, Valve introduced an
interactive, digital "compendium" which fans could purchase to follow the event and contribute to the prize pool; TI3 spanned August 7–
11 and reached a $2.8 million prize pool with $1.2 million added from compendium purchases. The fourth International, this time held
at the larger Seattle venue KeyArena from July 18–21, continued the practice of compendium sales and ultimately broke records for
having the largest prize pool in eSports history, with a total of $10.9 million (following the event, the 2nd and 3rd largest prize pools
were $2.8 million from TI3 and $2.1 million from the 2014 League of Legends World Championship, respectively). The fifth and most
recent International took place on August 3–8, also at KeyArena. The prize pool totalled over $18 million, making it the largest e-sports
9. HOTTEST GAMING NEWS
Next Battlefield 4 patch is in certification,
releases in 2-3 weeks
The Battlefield 4 Summer patch is officially done and is now
in testing with the various platform holders (Sony,
Microsoft). DICE’s David Sirland announced that the patch
has been sent for certification, and this process usually
takes 2 to 3 weeks before it’s cleared for release.
The certification process tests the new content for any
system issues and makes sure things run as they are
supposed to. As for the PC, DICE and EA do internal tests
before releasing the update.
While the PC update could be released faster, DICE has
historically waited and released the update on all platforms
at the same time.
The Battlefield 4 Summer patch includes a slew of new
features, including a brand new map: Zavod Graveyard
Shift, which is the night version of the popular Zavod 311.
Check out some screenshots of the new map, and a trailer
as well.
Other additions in the patch include a new weapon and
vehicle balancing pass, and a big back-end server update
that should make the game run a lot smoother.
11. BADASS CHARACTER OF THE WEEK
Piranha Plant
Game: Super Mario
The head of a Piranha Plant is most commonly
either red or green with multiple other colors.
Originally, Piranha Plants were found
exclusively in pipes, either darting-out and
biting anything near or remaining still and
spitting fireballs. Currently, Piranha Plants can
be found both in and out of pipes, and their
fire-breathing ability is rarely used. The head

13. DID YOU KNOW?
When pokemon PARAS evolves to
PARASECT, it’s actually being
engulfed by the fungi growing on
its back. It takes over the
pokemon’s body and does all the
thinking. This essentially leaves
the pokemon zombiefied and
lifeless, as illustrated by its lack of
pupils.
