Whichever way you learned to read, chances are you never knew what the terms "phonics" or "whole language" meant. However, these are the terms
that are at opposite ends of an on–going debate over the best way to teach children how to read. "Simply stated, supporters of the whole language
approach think children's literature, writing activities, and communication activities can be used across the curriculum to teach reading; backers of
phonics instruction insist that a direct, sequential mode of teaching enables students to master reading in an organized way" (Cromwell, 1997).
Critics of phonics claim that the curriculum is too boring, that the endless worksheets will turn children away from the joy that could be reading and

Children learn, memorize, and apply rules, formulas, and patterns of reading and speech (Curtis, 1997; Wiber, 2002). This approach has also been
called a "bottom–up" approach because the teachers believe that by focusing on the smaller parts and equipping children with the ability to figure out
new words, meaning and comprehension will follow. The strong supporters on this side of the debate want phonics taught in an intensive and
systematic manner (Strickland, 1998). These phonics supporters criticize whole language, claiming that the approach is too disorganized and phonics
taught in such an incidental manner that some children will never have the right tools to learn to read well (Cromwell, 1997).
There are many advantages to using phonics. Children who learn to read by using phonics generally have better pronunciation, spelling, and word
recognition. They have been given a tool that can be used over and over again while reading and writing, without having to memorize vocabulary and
spelling of the words (Curtis, 1997). There are also many examples of how explicit, intensive and systematic phonics can work well in classrooms.
One of these examples is the reading program developed in California. After years of implementing whole language instruction in their classrooms,
reading scores in the state dropped to be among the nation's worst.

Figurative Language In Harry Hume's The Cough By Harry Hume
The Cough Harry Hume's short story "The Cough" uses figurative language to show that the father works as a miner and as a result is getting sick
but cannot stop working as his job is the only thing keeping the family afloat. The diction used in this micro story illustrates how the father's job as a
miner seeps into every part of their life. The personification of the cough sets out to illustrate the father's illness not as something evil or destructive,
but simply as a nuisance. The symbolism of the Orrery demonstrates how the author views their father's sickness as the core of his world,
responsible for making their lives function. Hume's is able to show an entire family's state and story in a few paragraphs by using carefully selected
words and literary devices to make the reader infer the information rather than say it explicitly. The personification of the cough shows that it is such a
constant presence in the family's life that it almost acts as a family member. The description of the cough behaving "like achild" both makes the reader
view the cough as a member of the author's family and implies that the author does not view the cough as necessarily malignant. However, the cough
is a nuisance much like a little kid is a nuisance because it is "always hungry" and "demand[ed] attention." The cough being "always hungry" makes the
reader think of a little kid wanting food rather than a lung disease that forces the father to constantly cough and the cough "demand[ing] attention"
makes the reader think of a pesky child rather than the constant sounds of the father coughing. These descriptions fit in with the personification of
a child and make the reader see the cough as more of a helpless thing that needs to be taken care of rather than insidious and evil. The
personification of the cough as a child also acts as if the author sees the cough as a part of the family, both emphasizing its constant presence and the
author's almost benign view of the cough. The imagery used in "The Cough" illustrates the father's life as a miner. The father is first described as

During the 1930s and 1940s, it was used as a final, remedial approach for those learners who had trouble with word recognition and memory
(DeMoulin et al., 1999, В¶4). In the 1950s, though, Rudolph Flesch wrote Why Johnny Can't Read, placing a more brilliant spotlight on phonics
instruction. He developed a curriculum of 72 lessons, outlining over 200 letter–to–letter relationships that represented the fundamental sounds of the
English language (DeMoulin et al., 1999, В¶4–5). By the 1960s, phonics had taken on a more positive reputation with the help of Jeanne Chall, author
of Learning to Read: The Great Debate. Today, phonics is one of the front–runners in the "reading wars" (Chall, 1992, p. 316). Its history speaks
strongly for this method of instruction; however, phonics is quickly falling into the ideological quagmire of the past two decades.
Despite this ideology, phonics remains an easily understood method of instruction. As stated in the previous section, phonics relies upon phonemes or
units of speech. Many of today's phonics curricula, like Flesch's approach, include the 200 letter–to–letter relationships that represent these phonemes.
The relationship of phonemes to each other, then, leads the learner to the other phonics concepts: segmentation, decoding, and encoding. Segmentation

Throughout a lifetime people hear thousands of single stories from people, places, and things. This makes the passing of information very dangerous.
A single story means, a limited viewpoint, or only seeing something from one angle. As proved in many cases, this is very dangerous in knowing the
whole story from every perspective. In many cases the source you are hearing this from may have opinions or facts beyond the point adjusting your
way of thinking. The dangers of singles stories was noted by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. She had a first hand experience with this situation. As a child
in Nigeria she was always reading english books. Appropriately, the national language of Nigeria is english, so it is likely that those were the books
available. Later Chimamanda got ahold of African books and this completely changed her mindset, and realized she was only receiving stories from
english perspective. This was one of her first encounters with single story. Later when she moved to America for school her she encountered a similar

Context, in general, is important. Without context, words are twisted, actions are misunderstood, and insights are lost. However, as individual people,
it is harder to determine what context matters. How important are intentions? How important are motives? From the outside looking in, these internal
concepts may be critical information, but ultimately, intentions and motives will not change the consequences. In judging yourself, it is the actions that
matter. By redefining individuals as self–contained creations, context narrows to only your own actions, to only the factors you have control over. It is
with this simplified worldview that we can learn to improve ourselves, love ourselves, and ultimately, live well. In order to recontextualize ourselves,
we must first be a completed whole. As comforting a thought as it is that soulmates exist, that somewhere out there is your other half, this ideology
limits progress. If we are waiting for our missing piece, then we do not have full autonomy over ourselves; we are dependent on the contributions of

socioeconomic environments. We will review the methods of explicitphonics and whole language to examine what, if any, is the more advantageous
method of reading instruction for students who live in poverty. The purpose of this literature review is to investigate the impacts of specific reading
instruction on the literacy development of children and how socioeconomics restricts these impacts. The research reviewed was collected from peer
review journals using the Central Search feature on the UCO Chambers Library website. The majority of the researcher's findings came from

The other popular technique of reading instruction is whole language, also known as the "look–say" method. It has roots that reach back to the 1920s,
when some teachers favored "experience charts" in place of text books (Chall, 1992). Two of whole language instruction's biggest advocates are Ken
Goldman and Frank Smith. In the late 1960s, they observed that adults seemed to process written word without recoding it letter by letter, or sound by
sound. Based on this, Goodman and Smith claimed that children should learn to read naturally, as they learn to speak, and that breaking words down
into sounds was unnecessary (Moats, 2000). The basic focus of whole language learning is less on the rules and repetitions that are prevalent in phonics

choice of words makes the paper seem dull and too predictable. In the most recent paper however, there were more variety in the vocabulary to still

am sure you people must be aware of some of the incidents which have happened in various parts of the city, when coloured people moved into certain
areas." By this he meant violence directed toward the Black families that moved into white neighbourhoods – this could also be a masked threat
towards the family. Afterwards, he tells them that he and his neighbourhood not only 'deplore that kind of thing' but they are trying to do
something about it. After he says this it seems as though he is going to say something more pleasant, he has also got the family encouraging him to

directions "(more encouraged by such affirmation)." The family at this point is expecting something positive from him, but after he says "Our people
out there feel that people get along better, take more of a common interest in the life of the community, when they share a common background." To
put it simply, he and his neighbourhood are telling them that they are unwanted just because they do not have a 'common background' by this meaning

However, these are the terms that are at opposite ends of an on–going debate over the best way to teach children how to read. "Simply stated, supporters of the whole language approach think children's literature, writing activities, and communication activities can be used across the curriculum to teach reading; backers of phonics instruction insist that a direct, sequential mode of teaching enables students to master reading in an organized way" (Cromwell, 1997). The diction used in this micro story illustrates how the father's job as a miner seeps into every part of their life. The personification of the cough sets out to illustrate the father's illness not as something evil or destructive, but simply as a nuisance. The symbolism of the Orrery demonstrates how the author views their father's sickness as the core of his world, responsible for making their lives function. Hume's is able to show an entire family's state and story in a few paragraphs by using carefully selected words and literary devices to make the reader infer the information rather than say it explicitly. The personification of the cough shows that it is such a constant presence in the family's life that it almost acts as a family member. The description of the cough behaving "like achild" both makes the reader view the cough as a member of the author's family and implies that the author does not view the cough as necessarily malignant. However, the cough is a nuisance much like a little kid is a nuisance because it is "always hungry" and "demand[ed] attention." The cough being "always hungry" makes the reader think of a little kid wanting food rather than a lung disease that forces the father to constantly cough and the cough "demand[ing] attention" makes the reader think of a pesky child rather than the constant sounds of the father coughing. These descriptions fit in with the personification of a child and make the reader see the cough as more of a helpless thing that needs to be taken care of rather than insidious and evil.
